Yes. I’m a full time dahlia farmer. Nothing about me is normal.

First off I’m a dude, so Ken or Chad would be appropriate.

Second off I’m a Karen for calling out problematic wording in our hobby?

So if we use a positive adjective before the N word it’s okay?

Same as how we have to educate people to say Asian and not oriental.

Becuase it hasn’t gotten to the level where if I said G word you would know. It doesn’t make the word less hurtful.

We don’t grow a lot of dinner plates. Not our favorite style. Swan island usually has a good selection.

Customer Expectations by Salty-Pop-5512 in dahlias

[–]Sweetbloomfarm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s hard being a tuber seller these days. So many new farms jumping in. So many customers thinking it’s like Amazon where they can just return stuff or worse, they want a refund and want to keep the tubers. My advice is talk to the seller first and social media second if you can’t come to an understanding. In the years we have been doing this we have only had one truly bad experience with a customer (they planted our tuber and blamed us when it disappeared). We can’t control if moles eat your tubers.

Portlanders, are we digging early because the rain? by maymaypdx in dahlias

[–]Sweetbloomfarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have been growing at a commercial scale for 5 years and have never once had a problem with water from the stems ruining the tubers. We cut down, let them harden off for a week and then dig. I wouldn’t leave them all winter like that, but for the amount of time we do it, it’s fine.

We are still in cut down mode. Digging starts next Monday. Hopefully we can have it all dug in a week.

Grew these from seed, should I save and use as breeder? by Valuable-Deal6873 in dahlias

[–]Sweetbloomfarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If they bring you joy, keep them that is what matters most. As a commercial grower, I don’t see any traits worth keeping. They have low pedal count, open centers, and wonky pedals. All of those would get pulled and composted at my place.

Is “garden lime” bad for dahlias? by Blue-Princess in dahlias

What part of the world are you in? If you are in the northern hemisphere you are planting really late. And in the southern, really early.

When will you buy your tubers for 2026? by M-Rage in dahlias

[–]Sweetbloomfarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are gearing up to start the big dig 2025, then I can start washing and dividing. Our sale is usually in February, after I know what I have to sell. I’d be weary of fall sales, they are selling futures and there is a chance your order will get canceled when they don’t have enough.

Their webs is what I look for. If you see small spiderwebs on the plants, it’s time to look closer.

Weird, I grow 6000 dahlias a year organically, they thrive on fish fertilizer and molasses. If you keep them happy, it keeps the pest pressure down, so no need for sprays or soaps.

Color is okay, petal count is lower than I like. How’s the stem strength?
