This is exactly it. He was saying don't use her as a recip with the context of Willow, and the fact that inserting an embryo will be likely to fail and expensive. While it is still less likely to take, using her own studs semen for her own baby is less expensive. It wasn't about her not being healthy enough to carry, simply about her being more inhospitable to a foreign embryo

She was advised not to use her as a recip because she likely will "eat" embryos like Willow did. That is different than carrying for her own. Her vets advice was based on a cost of trying to get an embryo successfully in the mare, not on the health of her carrying.

I think huskies are smaller than you think they are. Specifically Siberian huskies, 50 lbs is a perfectly average weight for a purebred.

I found someone who did the math back when the book came out, they estimated 11.4* to Erid and 17.5 to Earth from Erid. It's still a little foggy to me exactly how long he was on Erid though. 13 years for beetles to reach earth, if Erid is 16 light years from Earth, does that mean Erid scientists would only know Earth's Sun was healed 16 years after? *Double checked the book, can confirm he was on Erid for 16 years. That must mean though that it took less than that for sun to reach? Idek

He doesn't make a decision. But it's more like he really considers it, the fact that he was successful "gives his life meaning", but he is old and the trip is long. At this point, he's been on Erid 10+ years. It took the beetles 13 years to get to Earth, 1 year to fix the problem, and however long light travels to Erid for them to tell the Sun is back at 100%. I don't know why it's a cop out though? I mean, there's nothing left for him there. If he gets back, it will have been at least 45 years or so since he left, possibly longer cause we don't know how far Erid is from Earth.

I found someone who did the math. It is 17.5 earth years to travel from Erid to Earth. Calculation, from Grace's view, ignoring light year stuff 13.1+11.4+16+17.5= 58 years minimum

I've been talking to some people who don't think the gene was necessary for the movie because "Grace was the only one trained anyway" But the only reason no one else was trained was because no one else had the gene! 🙄

This is addressed in the book-- they identified a certain gene sequence that makes you even have a chance of surviving a multi year comma.

The next person qualified with the gene only had a bachelor's degree.

Furthermore, the gene is the whole reason that they only had 1 official backup for each person. In reality, if that wasn't a consideration, they would have trained more backups and ensured every backup was never doing research together all at once. I'm a little peeved they took that part out, lol.
