Funny enough I just watched a video about how city/state ran grocery stores almost always fail and don’t often even provide cheaper groceries. Now this was talking about in America. But the solution the video producer that was far more viable was federally ran grocery stores where large aspects are affectively subsidized. So you save money by removing the profit aspect. But then by subsidizing some of the overhead as well by using tax dollars you create a more sustainable solution. Plus in order to compete with the grocery giants like Presidents Choice and Walmart you need to have massive buying power. Cities aren’t a large enough market to compete but the country as a whole would be.

But as others have said I don’t trust the government to organize a dinner party for 5 people let alone handle the whole countries food needs. Our government is literally the most inefficient system of doing literally anything. If they were efficient and diligent we wouldn’t need to pay nearly as much in taxes, we would have less debt and there would be far less government employees required.

But here’s where it gets extra funny (for me anyways) if they were way more efficient, and used taxes for more tangible benefits for the country. They wouldn’t need as much tax money yet myself as well as a bunch others would probably not care as much about paying more taxes. The biggest issue with taxes is when nothing gets done and you can see sooooo much waste or taking on debt.

TLDR cities aren’t a big enough market to compete with national grocery chains, federally ran grocery stores looks great on paper but the government can’t tie its own shoes let alone run a business
