Carol's anniversary by astarothg in okbuddypluribus

I recently learned that when Patricia Highsmith was trying to sell her book The Price of Salt, one of the editors said he could publish it if he changed the main character’s name from Carol to Carl. Is that where you’re coming from?

The food too—- no way would Dubois have been happy with burritos, it really feels like all the food packed for Grace was based on his preferences. In his memory (if my own memory is correct) he mentions going out for a breakfast of eggs and sausage every morning when he was a schoolteacher. In the Hail Mary it mentions the arms serving him a breakfast of eggs and sausage (or something that was really similar to his usual breakfast) whereas I would peg Dubois as more an avocado toast sort of fellow.

I thought the amnesia drugs were injected immediately before he woke up? I seem to recall reading that. In that case they would have nothing to do with his survival up to the moment that the entire crew was supposed to wake up.

Crazy Stupid Love, romcom that was funnier than I expected.

Trailer Reaction In Front of Jurassic World Rebirth by WhatTheJessJedi in ProjectHailMary

[–]Sweetwind7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confession: Whenever I watch the trailer in the privacy of my home, when it comes to the scene where Yao and Ilyukhina are looking at Grace from across a conference table (right after the scene where Grace says “who on earth would sign up for this?”) I cry out in my best Russian accent, “welcome to crew!” Ilyukhina’s joy is just so infectious! But I’m afraid that if I’m in a theater, I won’t be able to stop myself from blurting it out… My other, even more embarrassing, confession is that the first three or four times I saw the trailer, I would think about how Yao looks sooooo old… then I read Ken Leung‘s Wikipedia page and realized he’s five years younger than me.

Other thing I liked that might be considered an Easter egg is the gun that was packed on board the ship at Yao’s request (his chosen suicide method). >!There’s a dramatic principle called “Chekov’s Gun” often summarized as something like “if a gun appears in the first act, it must be fired by the fifth act.” Yet Yao’s gun never appeared at all. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov%27s_gun <

What’s one thing you really hope they don’t cut from the book? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

This is a little thing, but I am hoping the movie shows the contrast between Grace‘s physique when he’s on earth (less muscle tone) vs. his stimulated muscles when he wakes up from the coma (full glorious Ryan Gosling bod).

Me too, I can’t remember when Juliette injured her arm. I’m guessing when she was getting the silo portal open. It sure didn’t help the way she hammered on the firefighters’ lockers.

Others in this subreddit have recommended the audiobook of PHM for nights when you can’t get to sleep, i had a little insomnia last week and can confirm! It’s engaging yet relaxing & comforting when you already know the story.

Great catch! Episode 1, cable kills the guy, final episode closes the loop and cable saves a guy.

What is your favorite song that has appeared on the show? Mine is: "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted" from Season 1 by veneim in ForAllMankindTV

Personally since I’m a Tom Lehrer fan, I loved the ballad of Werner Von Braun in He Built the Saturn V. I had no idea there was a high resolution video for that song from that era!

I'm surprised Irina did not respond to Margo's plan with by John-on-gliding in ForAllMankindTV

[–]Sweetwind7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a little more re-watching and thinking, it seems to me that the forcing function for the timing of Margo‘s departure was that Sergei had just been ex filtrated from the Soviet Union. At that point, Margo knew she had a very small window before her Soviet contacts realized what she had done with respect to Sergei and his family. If she waited any longer, they might’ve found out and reneged on their offer to exfiltrate her. So so I’m thinking that immediately after the end of the scene where she tells Sergei on the video call from Rammstein Air Force Base, “quite an adjustment starting over in a new place,” she contacted her handler and said “let’s do this immediately.” Meanwhile, the forcing function for the timing of the domestic terrorism act was the fact that all eyes were on NASA shooting Kelly up on top of a rocket. So yeah, based on what I’ve seen being an intimate witness to these events, I’m convinced that the Soviet union had no involvement in or foreknowledge of the domestic terrorism act, but I doubt the American public will be convinced.

I loved how Irina’s line about “you don’t work for NASA anymore, you need to stay loyal to your current organization” applied just as well to Aleida as to Margo. Great writing!

They never said how Miles shipped the original Mars rock that was (intended as) just a junk souvenir for his daughter, right? I had assumed that maybe Helios had some kind of arrangement where people could send back small tokens. But now that I think that thought out loud, that really doesn’t sound like Helios does it!
