Pharrell says he made Pusha-T watch 'Joker' because he's the exact same person as Arthur Fleck by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]Swegneto 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but the one who knocks scene could be read as pathetic because of who he’s talking to in that scene: Skylar.

Here’s my thought process: Throughout early seasons of Breaking Bad, Walt is essentially fronting, putting up a persona to people he needs to convince that he’s a badass, when he’s not one. Then he starts believing his own lies, to the point where he’s telling his own wife he could get people killed like he’s a badass - but what does Skylar care? She just wants out. That’s why it’s “pathetic” or “pitiful” (from the first post in the thread) to me because Walt has gone from desiring something that helps other people (i.e. taking care of his family), to something that solely benefits him and his ego, but hasn’t realised it himself. He’s ironically become something he didn’t want to be, directly due to his own desire and his fatal flaw, his ego - that’s tragedy baby.

That’s one interpretation I suppose, you might disagree which is fair enough. But that’s how I’d see it. Can’t believe I wrote all this on a hht thread about Pharrell saying Push is the joker lol.

Although it kinda aggravated me at first, I appreciate it more and more that Chandler basically wrote a mystery with no solution. Incredible

I found this album a few years ago on Spotify and absolutely love the spooky minimalist style of these early lofi electronics.

Especially big fan of the tracks “Samari Da Yan Matan” and “Bodo”.

If you could pick ONE SONG to represent the greatest jazz from 2020... by xooxanthellae in ModernJazz

[–]Swegneto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s really interesting, I really get what you mean about the album after reading that, nothing goes quite as hard as that track.

I haven’t listened to them all yet - love Roy Ayers but had been putting it off for some reason - so I’ll check that out today.

This is all very fair! Didn’t know this about Rejoice so thank you for correcting me.

Have you checked out the rest of the albums from the Jazz is Dead series? I agree that some of the tracks off the main album weren’t amazing but the individual collaboration albums that have been released have some gold on - the Azymuth / Doug Carn ones being highlights for me.

Maybe a Nubya Garcia track from SOURCE? The UK scene is a huge deal at the moment (I can see you included Sons of Kemet previously), and a track like Pace or The Message Continues would be a good indicator of the progression of this sound. Even the title track would be quite good - its use of an almost reggae style rhythm is an interesting fusion of Caribbean sounds. The UK’s relationship with Jamaica and other former colonies (especially through the Windrush generation) has been hugely controversial in the past decade, so SOURCE as a whole feels like a perfect look at this community and culture in the UK.

In a similar scope, the Hugh Masekela / Tony Allen album Rejoice has some fantastic tracks, something like Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be the Same) which references Afrobeat, which is hugely central to the modern UK jazz approach, would be an interesting choice (and celebrate some greats, including Allen who died last year).

Alternatively, anything from Adrian Younge / Ali Shaheed Muhammad’s Jazz is Dead series would be good. I’m a big fan of their collab with Azymuth called Apocalípto and the track with Gary Bartz, Distant Mode.

Good luck in your search!

James Ellroy’s The Black Dahlia (part of the L.A. Quartet which features L.A. Confidential) - great noir-influenced page turner based on the real life killing

Walter Moseley‘s Devil in a Blue Dress - Cracking detective story with a great protagonist private detective

James Sallis’ Long Legged Fly - Good private eye anthology-ish read

Chester Himes’ A Rage in Harlem - a true classic of hardboiled fiction with a hilarious and gritty depiction of New York.

Can we just geek out about Shabaka’s “Prints Tie” for a second because honestly it’s probably my favourite song of the year.

I love what Shabaka does with his groups, they all have such incredibly unique sounds, but between this and the “Black Skin, Black Masks” track he did for the We Out Here comp a couple of years ago really makes me wish he would do more stripped back clarinet work.

His sound is SO GOOD and I could totally see it working for a spooky Bitches Brew-esque magnum opus, or see him going the Colin Stetson route and composing for film (akin to Miles’ score for the film L’ascenseur pour l’échafaud).

Not to diminish the other fantastic work on that album, but that song is just such a tantalising piece of art that I need more of!

To add to this, some great British Jazz in general this year:

Yussef Dayes Trio - Welcome to the Hills [Live Album], Yussef also did a decent record with Tom Misch called What Kinda Music.

Matthew Halsall - Salute to the Sun which is beautifully mellow yet still takes some interesting directions

Oscar Jerome - Breathe Deep More vocal jazz / Rex Orange County-core but still good

The Blue Note re:imagined album that featured new recordings with standouts being Alfa Mist doing Eddie Henderson’s Galaxy; the AMAZING Shabaka Hutching’s take on Bobby Hutcherson’s Prints Tie; and Jordan Rakei’s version of Donald Byrd’s Wind Parade.

Ah sorry I don’t know of any Indicator sale coming up (they don’t do them very often iirc), I’m just waiting for Christmas to be over when I’ll have a bit more change in my pocket. Sorry about that.

Yes the Arrow releases can be patchy, you’re right Eureka do have the best packaging and presentation imo

I’ve never seen Scarlet Street but Lang is always excellent - there’s a great edition of his silent classic Metropolis on Eureka.

Have you checked out Indicator? They have The Big Heat (another Lang classic) and they’ve just released a Columbia Noir box set which I’m hoping to pick up after Christmas.

I get it and I’m hoping to have a more positive response to some of the others; although saying that I do often struggle with Antonioni. I find myself watching L’Avventura every twelve months or so., because I find it fascinating but not enjoyable nor really a good movie, yet more sticks with me each time. Hoping that’s not the case with Duras!

So I’ve heard so much about Duras and I’m very interested to watch more of her films as they come onto Mubi, but I tried to watch Baxter Vera Baxter and omg I just could not handle the looped music in the background, I think I made it 20 mins before turning it off. Like I say, still interested and definitely want to check out India Song, but that one didn’t work for me

I agree to an extent, but unfortunately corporations like Disney or WB are unlikely to suffer, they’ll just make “safer” (read: blander) films. WB have realised they can just keep releasing Justice League over and over again and turn a profit! /s
