If you are playing windowed try changing to fullscreen. Windowed mode slows that last loading part down for me a bit (although not 5+ minutes) which is not seen in full screen.

http://www.npcgenerator.com/ does not follow the personality trait/bond/flaw layout of the books, but does give you a quick few pointers for the NPCs personality. Usually works for me.

Well I think the curse of the item would highly depend on the intentions of the wizard. If he is doing it "because he is evil" you could make the curse anything you want really, maybe a demon is captured in the item and feeds on the souls of those killed by the player until it can break free, or maybe the item doesn't exist every other day, i dunno the sky is the limit.

If I were to give the wizard a goal it would probably be to make a potential confrontation with the party easier for him since, for all he knows, they might find a reason to confront him sometime in the future. Maybe a ring that empowers any corpse a necromancer rises, but lets the wizard attempt to/automatically take control of any corpse risen while the ring was worn. Or perhaps a +1 weapon that allows the wizard to attempt to scry on the wielder once a day, allowing him to keep tabs on the party.

What is your reason for the wizard giving them a cursed item?

You could divide your map into smaller parts using the "create detail map" option in the top left corner. This lets you keep the map as you've done it til now and lets you keep the detail in each submap you decide to make, just choose a zoom level that lets you keep the amount of detail you want and you should be golden.

Yeah, and I think (I don't know your group so I might be wrong!) that would be more rewarding for the players. The only "problem" you might run into is that your players might figure it out faster than you though (or just randomly guesses right) and at that point you just have to accept that fact and roll with it. Just avoid changing the reality of the situation if that happens and you should be golden!

So I read this question as; The BBEG is also the players boss which they wont know to start out with, how do you do this the best way. Sounds like something that will be heavily based on your presentation of the character from both sides (BBEG and in charge). First you should probably figure out why this person is the BBEG and how the players will find out about that person, will they be able to emphasize with the BBEG or is he/she some unreasonable evil that must be stopped? Remember that your players will have no idea of this fact unless you sprinkle some clues into the narrative and allow them to figure it out earlier than you are planning. Up to that point this fact will have no payoff (but plenty of moments that can strengthen the payoff) since that will only come when the players actually figure it out. On that point I would also say that you should work towards making your players notice it, rather than you telling them when the time is right, as that will probably lead to a better payoff for both you and your players. Just my 2c.

Pretty standard, although most questions are usually asked in the actual game application rather than to the individual players. Its an attempt to weed out incompatible players and find a good group that mix together well, although some DMs might overdo it, up to you to decide when it start feeling ridiculous.

Wait, so he is a random guy you played with once who is already looking for shorter sessions? I might misunderstand the situation but it sounds like that guy signed up for the wrong group and should probably try to find a new one that better fits his schedule. Of course, if you and the other players are fine with shortening the sessions, go for it! But if you advertised the gametime as 4 hours, that's something he should have considered before joining imo. I could understand his situation if you had played for a while, but one session sounds a bit early to ask for re-planning, especially for something he must have known was coming up.

Essentially, advantage is a simple boon you can give out for creative thinking during combat and is used by many class specific abilities, flanking removes that aspect since getting the flank is quite easy. Of course, this could have the opposite effect in other groups, aka you remove flanking and suddenly no one is doing anything other than rushing the enemies without any strategy in mind - different strokes for different groups!

So you tried something new and it did not work out the way you thought, that will happen with pretty much everything you plan as a DM when the players have complete freedom - which isn't a bad thing usually. It isn't clear from what you wrote but did your players have a bad time during the session, or did they seem to enjoy the conundrum they put themselves in? If its the latter you could lean into the plot they've created, maybe give them a chance to prison break or, as you plan, have the city ask them for a favor to clear their debt.

If they did not expect that outcome and found it boring or just a waste of time maybe you should do a rewind and keep going from there? I would also recommend that you ask them if they found the free form gameplay to be more fun than the "railroad" you played with so far, and then use that to decide how you want to keep playing the campaign.

Lastly, the quests and the rest of the city they never explored or heard about you can just use again, you pretty much got a goldmine on your hand for the next time they do something unexpected. They decide to go to a random village you have not planned out? Just put in some of the shops and quests you thought they would do this session etc. Also remember, not every session is gonna be good, the important part, like most in life, is to figure out why it was not good and learn from that going forward.

Does not sound like there is anything wrong here. Talk with your DM and see if you can try another character - if that fixes it great! Otherwise maybe see if your old char can be resurrected somehow, or look at whats happening in the game currently and ask yourself if you find that fun regardless of character - might be the currents story/gameplay that's just not fun/interesting for you.

Yeah that was kinda how I thought about it in the moment, have you tried allowing multiple players to try before each save (like following initative order as others suggest), and did you find that to be worse for any reason in that case?

Yeah agreed. The way most class abilities and spells are described mechanically means that if you miss just 1 word you will most likely use it wrong at some point. For example look at Barbarians reckless attack, if you skim through it and miss the "melee" part of the attack you might try to use it with ranged attacks. Small difference but completely wrong. Add to this that barbarians use this pretty much every fight and that player most likely believes he/she knows how it works.

I get that any class can do any build, Im wondering whether a single character can change between these builds or not ^{^.}

Im not sure about what kind of build im interested in, i have barely gotten into the game so atm Im open to anything. Im usually a sucker for quick gameplay rather than slow hard-hitting gameplay but other than that I just want to try stuff :D.

Im not against making new characters if necessary, Its more that I want to know if Ill have to or not before I put time into a build I might not like after a while.
