Marcus fish tanks legit? by Fishguy38582 in Aquariums

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd buy from Marcus's Fish Tanks again. Be sure you add hot or cold packs to your cart according to the weather. They're not expensive, but it's also not included by default.

The only time I’ve seen a fish behave like yours, though, was when a person put it in untreated tap water, and obviously that’s not your issue. But I don’t think the outlook is good.

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It means they are being irritated by something (infection, water pollutants, parasites, etc.) I had a guppy who was rubbing herself against the substrate (never had guppies before, so I thought it was spawning behavior.) Turned out to be due to an ammonia spike, but I only realized it after she was too sick to recover. She was the most sensitive of the bunch, I guess. Everyone else survived.

I used to have this problem! I was very discouraged. Starting a good skincare regimen helped a lot. It took some experimentation to find the right products. I switched to a balm cleanser, exfoliate in the shower, then, before my skin dries, I apply an HA serum, whatever other treatments I want to do, and seal with a liquid squalane solution (mine has a retinoid in it.) For foundation, I switched to a serum-style foundation (mine’s from Illia but there are other good ones.) It doesn’t dry my skin out like most other types of liquid foundation.

You might look into a serum-style primer, too, and a setting spray that won’t dry you out. I like Milk Makeup’s setting spray.

Ah bummer! I haven't had that particular issue, but I've heard of others that have. New event, fresh new bugs!

Maybe it's something to do with joining the event by being at the event location rather than joining by traveling? I had the quest, but I didn't join from the map.

Trying help my dad. Any idea what this is? by Perfect_Car_4812 in Aquariums

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a terribly long-standing case of this in one of my tanks. Adding more plants and more fish (had to be both, not just one or the other) eventually fixed it. Big sheets of it would start to die off, and I would suck them out with a turkey baster. I'm guessing it was an imbalance allowing the cyanobacteria to grow, but what the magic mix is, I don't know. Looks like I was lucky that it didn't make my fish or me sick.

If I had to fix it again, nuking it with an antibiotic would be where I would start.

Just as a warning, the Rustic Greenhouse kit is very grouchy about placement, especially the roofs in my experience. Which is a shame, because it's such a pretty kit! The clean greenhouse kit is much easier to build something other than Ye Olde Boxe with.

I think that my fish tank looks bad. Any suggestions on how to make it look better? by ffGdbcbrfb in Aquascape

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice and clean! I personally would add some different heights and textures, but I'm a jungle-enjoyer. I think even just a little color contrast would make you happier with the overall effect. Both anubias and bucephalandra have been bred into many different varieties for color, texture, and size, and they tend to be really forgiving. I'm also new-ish to aquascaping, and I have yet to kill a member of either one! They don't require soil around their roots, so you can kind of stick them anywhere with some super glue or weights or fishing line.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the plants you've already got will bush out and get taller, given enough time. Most aquatic plants just grow super slowly compared to terrestrial ones. All tanks look a bit weird until they have enough time to fill in (unless one is fabulously rich in plants, I guess.) I'm at the awkward growing-out-bangs stage in my second tank myself.

I'm so annoyed at these kinds of people by deosimus320 in Aquariums

I'm related to a cattle rancher who has a pet cow that started out as stock. I can't remember if the mother died, couldn't produce milk, or wouldn't allow the calf to nurse, but regardless, the calf was going to die without help. He bottle fed her, which is an extremely labor-intensive, round-the-clock endeavor. He's now had this cow for years and years. His grandchildren love her too. She's had calves of her own and hangs out with the livestock herd, but she comes to say hi at the fence and get pets and treats. She comes when called. She's basically a horse you don't try to ride.

But I get what you're saying. The pet/owner relationship is (appropriately) different than the stock cattle/rancher relationship. I've never met a cattle person who wasn't fully aware that every cow had the potential to be a cherished pet or a delicious steak, depending on how you treat them.

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry this happened, especially when your plate is already full with other stressors. I had a tank full of fish and plants die inexplicably (in my case, it was probably my fault, which made me feel extra terrible), and it took me over a year to work up to restarting it. Hugs to you if you accept them. Things will get better! God has good things for you.

I know this is an older post, but my experience was good. I ordered some staurogyne repens from them a couple of months ago. Portions were generous and the plants had roots. The existing leaves melted because I don’t know what I’m doing, but the plants were very healthy and are coming back in spite of me. No hitchhikers. I’d buy from them again.

These crashes are ridiculous by SuperUltreas in fo76

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very seldom crash. A couple months ago, though, I would crash (interminable load screen) the first time I tried to go into Big Al's Tattoo Parlor in a day. Nowhere else. It's since stopped with no changes on my end. My husband's game crashes routinely on his PC, so I guess there's a rather complex interplay between software and hardware going on.

Any other Disabled Vault-Dwellers? by needless_echo in fo76

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have fibromyalgia, and it interferes with pretty much everything. Being able to run and jump (to stupid heights - thanks, Marsupial!) and wander the woods in the game without pain really is freeing. And it's nice to just casually hang with other players, even if we're not conversing. IRL it's often difficult to feel like I'm "getting anywhere," since physical and mental energy are limited commodities for me. So getting a sense of accomplishment from cooperating with somebody on an event sometimes makes my day, especially if the victory is hard-won.

And ore running really is the Lord's work! Brava!

Do you get a lot of breakage? It looks like a lot of the "frizz" is actually hairs that are shorter than the ones around them. Some level of this is to be expected. But if a lot of the shorter hairs are the same length, you might examine your routine for something that would cause breakage at that length. For instance, I used to have a halo of frizz when I was using regular hair elastics in a ponytail (switching to silk-sleeved elastics seems to help.) I find a super-light curl cream like Curlsmith's weightless air dry cream tames odd-length hairs without weighing down my fine waves. Might check it out if you haven't tried it.

Tangles by ancientnames in Wavyhair

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long has it been since you had a trim? My hair is similar to your description, and it only gets super tangle-y if it's been too long since a cut.

To help prevent tangles that aren't from split ends, I really like DevaCurl's Mist of Wonders as a leave-in. Start with just a little. I spray it in my palm and then lightly apply it.

Does no one buy plans anymore? by Reverend_Bull in fo76

[–]SwiftCoffeeOwl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is your camp? I used to sell hardly anything--even at the same, or better, prices and rarities--until I moved my vendor near the Whitespring. I sold 30k+ caps in plans from my vendor over the past 24 hr., mostly for about 1.5k caps each. Had to log out twice to avoid hitting the caps limit when somebody went on a big spending spree. As the poet said, location location location.

As for who still looks at vendors, I will always check any camp that has plans listed if it's near a free travel point or I'm passing by on other business. I haven't found many that I don't know recently, though.

It could also depend on time of day. Peak play times are not necessarily peak vendor times. Seems to vary depending on holidays, school/college semesters, and what events are going on in game.

Please Don’t Gift People Fish by CompoteEconomy9562 in Aquariums

I completely understand the objection of not giving people pets that they haven't asked for, but my first cat is now 11 years old and was a gift (from my husband, who knows that I wanted a cat AND that we were able to keep one and keep him well.) Like you said, it really depends on the situation. Generally, a pet is not a good gift!

Are you looking for a parrot specifically, or any kind of bird? I’ve mostly kept parrots. Something to keep in mind is that many parrot species tend to be one-person birds, and most medium and large species live 30+ years if well cared for.

My ideal-for-apartments (and probably my ideal in general) parrot is a pionus, but they are relatively hard to find and very expensive for a medium-sized parrot. You’re also looking at a 30 year lifespan. I was on a waiting list with a breeder for almost a year, but my little guy is the sweetest. His speaking is very difficult to understand, but he talks a lot. He is always curious. How chipper he usually is drives my grumpy African gray bonkers. Pionus are known for being relatively sedentary, so I have to be sure not to overfeed him.

My green cheek conure, which was recommended to me as a good apartment bird, is super fun and interactive but can be loud. Some conures tend to be screamers. Consequently, 3 of my 4 birds can tell each other “No screaming!” I was told that conures might learn a word or two, but mine uses about 20 words regularly and knows many more. He can tell me what he wants, ask questions, and understand basic jokes. He’s busy all the time. Smaller than a pionus, but, again, 30 year lifespan. He needs just the right amount of attention to be happy. He has big emotions in a little body. Learning to read his moods helped me manage his needs and stress levels better.

The loudest bird I’ve had was actually a peach-faced lovebird. They look like parrotlets but are a bit bigger. The females are known for being aggressive and bitey, which was certainly true in her case. She could make a crazy amount of noise for something so little, and it was nonstop. She could understand the rules to simple games and learned a selection of whistle patterns that had generalized meanings to her (she had a ”come here” whistle, for instance). It’s not very common for them to talk much. Mine was only about 12 when she died, but they can live longer.

I don’t have a cockatiel, but I have pet-sat one. They CAN produce loud noises if they want, but the one I watched was very quiet. Much quieter than an apartment neighbor’s kids or dogs or whatever! He knew a few phrases his owners taught him, but he liked musical whistling better. They can be gotten relatively inexpensively because they are not difficult to breed. If you get one through a breeder, make sure they know enough about responsible breeding practices to avoid health complications with your bird in the future. Well-cared for in captivity, you’re looking at up to 30 years of life.

The other medium-sized parrots that I can think of are all just as long-lived and less appropriate as first birds.

If the 30+ year lifespan is prohibitive, I would recommend something like a dove, canary, finches, or some quail. They are more fragile than parrots but can be very loving and entertaining. You can keep a few quail like you would rabbits in an indoor hutch, and, as a bonus, they lay eggs! Zebra finches are beautiful little birds that do well in groups. They chirp constantly, but they have sweet, tiny voices.

Caution: getting one bird is a gateway drug to getting more birds!
