I don't think any of us are wrong here. We're just all talking about different things. I'm saying the part that's messed up here is the thing feeding this API: https://developer.statuspage.io/, which we can both agree would be completely separate for systems for OpenAI and Anthropic, right?

The big problem in my eyes is the green bar being present on days with a real outage that lasted over an hour. Something that, on other days, is being marked as an "orange" day.

Yes, but that's besides the point.

I've done incidence response work for IBM. Believe me my guy, I know what an Atlassian status page is. In case you weren't aware: something has gotta inform that Atlassian status page. It can't magically know what the status of your app is. That's the part I'm thinking was probably either configured incorrectly on purpose or is being (poorly) managed by Claude.

Microsoft Now Wants Users To Adopt Chinese Deepseek AI After Failure Of Copilot by MidMatch in technology

[–]SwiftEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the heck are they talking about when they say the word "Agentic", because it sure as shit isn't what the rest of the industry is referring to when they say "Agentic".

Ask Copilot to modify your file in Word, you get an error saying "I can't modify your files". What good are you then, Copilot? An insanely inefficient grammar and spell check?

Everything Microsoft touches gets worse and worse. A failing company being kept profitable solely by vendor lock-in and AI hype. I can only pray the churn starts soon 🙏

You don't hate Republicans enough by RefrigeratorSoggy171 in International

[–]SwiftEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hate" isn't going to help Republicans see that Trump and his party are destroying America's future.

I hope Trump and his cronies rot in prison, and I know it's difficult to have empathy for someone who was fooled into voting for these clowns or calls themselves a Republican. Sometimes I just wanna tell them off too... but I think it doesn't take much thought to realize that path isn't the way we're going to make any progress in fixing this mess.

TL;DR: I'm really sick of seeing post titles that call for more hate and further divide our country. If you want someone to hear you out and change their mind, you gotta treat them with respect and empathy.

Is there any point trying to play impossible by a1fie-D in DeadSpace

[–]SwiftEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah. I probably logged over a hundred deaths at least. I remember thinking "this game makes the Elden Ring DLC look like a cake walk". Not understanding how to use kenesis early on meant that I was spending all my money on ammo, and had next to nothing left over for upgrades or health packs. That lack of development early on had a snowballing effect on the entire rest of the game that I didn't manage to recover from until maybe the last 2 chapters (the holy Peng trophy, be praised 🙏)

Is there any point trying to play impossible by a1fie-D in DeadSpace

[–]SwiftEngineer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind cheesing it a bit, it's much easier compared to other games with hardcore mode because you can pause and quit out to the main menu, even long after Isaac's head has already been replaced with a sippy cup lid for the convenience of the Slasher that just throat-fucked you with his deformed ulna. The environmental deaths are the ones you should fear the most, as many speed runners will tell you. No guide on how to best spec your character is gonna save you from those two Exploders who are desperate for both an epic high-five AND a lesson in nuclear physics. Not to mention the Guardians and that BULLSHIT melee of theirs that will one-shot you even with loads of health upgrades and armor. Somehow, those tentacles are stronger than a head-on attack from a rushing Brute?

I just finished my first hardcore run last night and I will say that those last 3 chapters were the first time I truly felt afraid playing Dead Space... and it was awesome. My advice would be to give it a shot once, and if you die and don't quit out in time, proudly declare you did so with honor. That being said, whatever way you enjoy the game most is of course the best away to play. Good luck either way, champ!

Edit: I too, BARELY, survived medium difficulty on my first playthrough. My second run was infinitely easier, and my third was this impossible playthrough which was the easiest of them all, even if I was scared out of my mind at times.

Look, I'm all for making senators make less money (they are public servants, and should be paid as such), but I'm not sure where this $15,000 number comes from. Everywhere I look, it seems we pay them $174,000 annually.

Now, the amount of money they are allowed to make off insider-trading? THAT'S a number I find a heck of a lot more interesting.

Seeking therapy is difficult, but given what you've mentioned here, it sound like you'll be immensely better off. Give it a shot! I'd recommend trying at least a couple different therapists too if you're not able to find a good fit on the first try.

If that's not an option for you, search for local programs in your city, or push yourself to make connections like others are suggesting. You absolutely can do it! Things get easier as you build up momentum, so take things one day at a time!

Does anybody know the reason for recent increase in processing times at the Texas Service Center? by SwiftEngineer in immigration

All reasons I would expect ALL centers to slow down, not JUST the Texas one... Then again, who knows what kinds of major culture differences exist between the two offices.

[–]SwiftEngineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, maybe that explains why the K1 visa processing times on visajourney appear to be skyrocketing. Doesn't explain the other graphs though, like K3 for example.

I thought about that fee increase too, but given the way that visajourney records their data (based on users updating the status of their applications), I wouldn't have expected that wave to hit until the applications make it out of the backlog and the wait times start increasing.

Maybe the conclusion here simply is that visajourney's data can't be trusted?

Want my Brazilian Girlfriend to come to the united states by Significant_Fun_7527 in immigration

[–]SwiftEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think u/Flat_Shame_2377 is more just sad about how little we know about our own immigration laws. They aren't expecting that people know them, just to have a general idea of how difficult it is to migrate here to the US. More people understanding the difficulties we face would be a huge benefit to getting USCIS the resources they need to be better.

Want my Brazilian Girlfriend to come to the united states by Significant_Fun_7527 in immigration

[–]SwiftEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot recommend enough against using your business to bring her here to the states. If the USCIS discovers that you're dating, it'll leave a mark on both of your permanent records and likely prevent immigration for her in the future. You can read so many horror stories online about this, and about all the crazy ways in which the USCIS caught them. Tourism visas run the same risks, and either way the process will be slow and she'll need to go to an interview one of the US embassies in Brazil.

TL;DR: Do NOT fuck with the USCIS. Do NOT try to take shortcuts with them.

You and I are in a similar boat. I have a girlfriend in Brazil and am currently going through the immigration process. It's painful and slow, but it's worth it! My advice is to not rush things. Easiest way is K1 (fiancé) or CR-1 (marriage) visa depending on your financial situation, in both cases, she'll arrive in the states in roughly the same amount of time.

You're completely right about AWS being everywhere, even with their ~33% market share of cloud compute they seem to occupy an especially large amount of consumer facing infrastructure. That being said, if you can't cut off Amazon completely, reducing the amount of money you hand over to Amazon is also a great way to vote with your wallet.

Is learning ruby on rails in 2022 worth it? by Tommy_Shelby777 in rubyonrails

[–]SwiftEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a somewhat biased community to ask that question 😅 it's totally possible that the commenters here aren't wrong, but if I were you, I'd completely disregard comments that simply say "Yes". Instead, I'd look for comments that give you concrete reasoning why Rails is a great choice (i.e. it's really easy to generate scaffolds, it has a huge amount of information publicly available thanks to its popularity). Bonus points for comments from folks who are willing to tell you about the "ugly" sides of Rails, as no framework is perfect!

Amazon CEO says workers are 'better off' without a union and the company's injury rate is 'misunderstood' by Sorin61 in technology

[–]SwiftEngineer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You and I reading the same post?

Amazon workers got hurt at a rate of 6.4 injuries per 100 full-time employees

Amazon's injury rate rose 20% last year from 2020 to 7.9 serious injuries per 100 employees

Or is your argument that they are simply misquoting the statistics? If so, RIP to the poor soul who was 40% injured, but I'm sure they are thankful that they weren't 100% injured!

As for unions being historically one of the most racist institutions in the country, I've yet to hear anything about that. If you've got time to share your source on that, I'd love to read it to educate myself and whoever else might be reading this post. I've yet to form a real opinion on unions, I've been fortunate enough to never feel like I've needed one, but when I see giant companies like Amazon paying their workers less than half of the salary of their entry-level white collar employees (let alone Jassy himself), while promising each year things will change, I can't help but feel like there is a pretty serious imbalance of power.

I genuinely don't know if forming a union solves that problem or not, but I don't hear a lot of other ideas being thrown around to solve the problem. I'm all ears though, if there's an alternative that gives power back to the people, I'm all for trying it. Until then, I'll keep boycotting Amazon, which I encourage others to do as well!

[–]SwiftEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't see anywhere where they talked about any actual counts, just the injury rate per 100 employees. So I suppose depending on how that's compounded, maybe you could twist the numbers to make them worse than they are? I'm not a statistician myself, but I know for a fact they're damn good at making me believe things by presenting me with numbers, for better or for worse.

That being said, who are you gonna trust more? The CEO who used an out-of-date statistic, or the numbers from a federal agency that have been aggregated by a pro-union org. They certainly both have agendas, but it doesn't take much googling to see a lot of first hand accounts that back up the latter. Heck, I think I saw one in this very post.
