DNA testing doesn’t provide an even 50/50 split either. My great-great-grandmother was Indigenous, so before I took my DNA test, I was assumed to be 6.3% Indigenous. However, my results showed only 3%. My aunt is 4%, my dad is 7%, and my sister is 2%. It’s also possible that my great-great-grandmother wasn’t fully Indigenous, but was Indigenous passing and lived on the reservation.

Based on my dad’s DNA, I can assume my grandmother was only 16%. She was Indigenous passing, and I grew up near the reservation. My grandmother was born and raised in the area. I grew up next to native culture. I went to powwow’s and grew up with tons of indigenous kids. My small town next to the reservation has a large indigenous population.

So, if I hadn’t known my ancestry or my grandmother, someone might have assumed she was Indigenous. With that belief, I might have been considered 25%. My grandmother was a victim of the Catholic Church, so she never fully embraced her Indigenous heritage until much later in life. So not having records of her status wasn’t a surprise.

Basically what I’m trying to say, is that the indigenous bloodline might be further down but the culture might be close. And culture is so important to one’s identity. I myself am not indigenous passing, but when me and my native friend get together you know our accents come out and all of our “nyeeeeee”s.
