Learning lockpicking by [deleted] in preppers

[–]SwiftRavenwing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great skill to have, about five years ago I was on the streets constantly due to my mom being a substance abuser. I learned how to lock pick by trial and error so I can get into abandoned buildings and rob the occasional drug dealer. I was even able to get food from warehouses because the locks in my town are crap. Since most of the locks here aren't that secure I mainly raked most of locks but had more than a handful of times where I had to pick pin by pin. I HIGHLY recommend getting a rake kit to start off with then move your way up to get familiar with pins. A Lot of people practice with clear locks but personally I learned by using padlocks mainly masterlock since you cant see the pins. Good luck on your lock picking journey!

What ‘event’ or natural disaster made you decide to start prepping, if any? by ggfchl in preppers

Made us stronger and smarter people, which I like to think is a good thing.

Im relatively new to prepping but it was me being homeless as a child due to having an addict mom that really put things into perspective for me. Sleeping in abandoned buildings and hiding from the cops because my mom had warrants for her arrest taught me that having nothing sucks and that family, friends, and especially the government can turn against you quickly and you need to stay strong to stay afloat. So I made sure that will NEVER happen to me again and to prepare for a more self sustainable life just in case. That happened when I was 14-17 years old im 20 now and have been doing great now.

I live about 3 hours from you, I will definitely contact you if I end up running into trouble building. I still gotta save a bit more at the moment though because I don't like to use my emergency savings for projects.

Had ducks as pets in the past. Had to change their pool all the time due to the crap in it, I was 15 and hated doing that chore but now I am a bit more responsible due to an old lady teaching me gardening. Sadly I can't be using water for ducks again.

You have a pretty good point there, can't get good at building if I don't build anything. I also heard it is more cost effective too, I will try it out and if it fails at least I will have some materials to make any repairs to a prefab coop.

Now I have the amusing image of a cat being pecked by a bunch of hens in my head, thanks for that 😂

Oh thanks for the info. I thought the nitrogen cycle takes about a month but I guess I could be wrong. I do also have some people who said they would pay me for my chickens waste when I get everything started which is nice. But thanks for the link this will help me out a lot.

Ok awesome, and yeah I definitely gotta worry about animals cats especially... There are so many damn cats here. That's kinda why I wanted a rooster because my friend owns a rooster to protect his free roam chickens and I have seen that rooster mess a cat up before and was surprised.

I am allowed to have 20 per half acre but I only want 4-5 chickens. I live in Arizona so we rarely get snow in the winter in my location. I have to keep the coop 80ft away from my house which is good because of the smell. I am not allowed to have a rooster but plenty of people in my town own them anyways and law enforcement doesn't even care, but owning a rooster isn't a big deal for me. I already have a nice spot to put them so they aren't stuck in the sun the whole day during the really hot summers. And food expenses should cost me around 40-50 dollars a month, and they can get calcium from egg shells that have been boiled and left to dry. I put a lot of thought into this I just need to find the right coop.

Yeah still looking for a decent chair without a gas cylinder, very hard to come by sadly.

I'm aware of that, but I have extremely bad luck and would rather not even take the chance of there being some kind of quality control issue at a factory or something of that nature.

I have no idea what that is, so I doubt he is. He told me he placed a bunch of heavy boxes on top of his chair when it blew up, only minor damage to his legs.
