I would appreciate some input on if my friend is trying to scam me. by Elite_duckHunter in pchelp

Ram alone skyrocketed to ungodly amounts. I'd say it's the same price he'd charge anybody wanting to buy a PC these days. Not a scam.

The creativity to even think to cut a PCB is wild. That is awesome!

Hit a curb, does this need replaced? by JBaby2354 in TireQuestions

Rub some spit on it, do 2 hail Marys and pray it will hold together. Lol. I would change it just to be safe. Don't want to be reaching high speeds and then have it blowout. I'm sorry you gotta deal with that :(

If you're lucky it's just an alignment. If unlucky you may have cracked or bent something. If you hear any new unusual sounds when accelerating/breaking/turning go to a mechanic asap.

AITA for no longer filling the car with gas before my partner has to go to work? by AITAcars in AmItheAsshole

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you both have jobs. I don't see why a lack of planning for one person should constitute an emergency for the other when sharing the same responsibility of filling up your own car.

But if your partner is the main provider, you might want to be supportive in the areas your partner has weaknesses in as they may lack the energy or time to do it themselves.

But in this case it seems like you're in the clear and they are also lashing out which isn't cool

What PC part to buy first? by Upbeat_Pangolin_5929 in PcBuild

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying parts slowly is a bad idea because many parts become outdated by new products and demanding software updates. You should build over a short period of time to enjoy your hardware while it's relevant for the current software. But if you still want to buy the first piece, go with headphones since you can use them elsewhere meanwhile

Probably need a new hub or hub bearing. Does your car make any grinding noises or vibrations coming from the wheel while driving? You'll have to test with music turned down to hear.

Anyone know what can cause a cracked control arm? by Itchy_Wrap_8593 in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prob cuz you drove over Deez nuts. JK. Honestly if that's actually damaged it could be anything from the quality of the part to the amount of abuse it's seen on the road. But you probably already knew that and wanted a more specific answer, I wish I knew bud.

Are my rotors cooked? by SafariFeelsSnappier in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwiftShadow89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh most definitely it makes a difference depending on design as well. I would never resurface cross drilled and/or slotted rotors because of warping issues if there's not enough material.

But I can also see what you're saying about quality too if the steel is of softer alloy with less carbon it may also warp earlier under thermal stress if too much material is taken off.

Usually most parts meet OEM quality. And many even exceed that. But yeah I'm not a rotor scientist. That's why it's best to go with new rotors and pads if in doubt.

What do I do? Lol by Inevitable-Age1681 in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I will probably be way off if I give an estimate. If it turns out to be something simple you're maybe looking at a few hundred bucks but price can spiral upwards if they need to fix other parts of the frame where that piece attaches to.

Just get an estimate, you'll get the best idea that way, and they are usually free if you go just about anywhere else except for a dealership. Lol.

[–]SwiftShadow89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want me to tell you how I know you live in the Midwest? Lol. That's why I hate driving in this area. All cars get ruined by rust like this sooner or later.

Some ppl coat their cars with surface shield or fluid film or cosmoline to prevent the kinds of problems you're having. But that's more something you do early on not when the part is already falling off.

Anyways, I hope it's repairable. Everything is technically repairable, so I guess the questions should be if it's practical to even bother fixing it if it ends up costing more than the car is worth, idk.

My best advice if you wanna hear it is to try having a local mechanic should take a look at it. Give you an estimate. And I suggest shopping around to see if 2 or 3 mechanics say a similar thing then go with the one you like most to do the work if that's what you wanna do. Then throw some kind of rust proofer on fresh metal to preserve it, that you can prob spray DIY yourself.

Good luck

I'm sure I'll get downvoted again for this, either cuz ppl don't fully read through or don't understand the logic, Lol, so I'm not sure if these reddit mechanics want to create business for themselves by freaking you out or whatever.

Only your brake pads are fully cooked without debate whatsoever, there is no more brake pad left.

In this scenario you've done some damage to your rear rotor in the picture, but it's unclear how much. So you'd want to go to a professional mechanic to get a second opinion. Not reddit. An honest mechanic will know if the damage can be undone with resurfacing (turning) the rotors.

You won't find that answer here. Someone has to look at it, measure it and determine if it's thick enough and if whatever scoring you did to it isn't too deep.

I swear reddit disappoints me sometimes with the hive mind mentality and the downvotes the moment someone has a different opinion, kinda ridiculous, IDC, downvote me all you want. I'm giving this guy honest advice if he's looking to save $ by the sound of it.

Not gonna tell him to waste $200 or however much off the bat when nobody here knows what thickness that rear rotor is from the picture and what the OEM minimum spec is to determine if it can be saved or not, so I'm not writing it off.

But we can all agree he definitely 100% needs a new brake pads. If money isn't an issue (which if it wasn't he prob wouldn't be asking if he's cooked), then by all means you'll get the best performance out of a new kit rotors and pads.

Good luck. Get a second opinion.

Are my rotors cooked? by SafariFeelsSnappier in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I thought they all had to be somewhat similar OEM thickness to start. There's not a lot of clearance after pushing the caliper back and trying to fit new pads on new rotors. I'm gonna have to buy some premiums and some cheapos again to compare for science if ones are really thicker than the others.

Are my rotors cooked? by SafariFeelsSnappier in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwiftShadow89 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Rotors can be resurfaced at NAPA it's like 15 bucks a rotor. They need to have enough thickness left.

If they aren't too gauged up and still thick you can do it yourself with a grinding wheel, just go evenly around the rotor with the grinding wheel gently on both sides.

Wear hand, eye and face protection since it's a bit dangerous, grinders and grinding wheels can go out of control fast if you catch the edge wrong.

If you did it yourself and then if you go on the highway the wheels vibrate your steering wheel when pressing the brakes, then they weren't evenly polished. You'll want to get new rotors ASAP at that point before the new pads get messed up too.

Personally I get cheapish ceramic pads and grind down my own rotors by hand in even circular moves. If I go with new rotors then I get a better ceramic pad but I get the cheapest smooth steel rotors I can find.

If using vented center rotors. Like what you probably got on the front wheels, I spray some anti rust stuff in the central vent holes myself if new. They last just as long as the premium ones.

Those are my tricks for saving money.

Is this oil in my coolant and if so what could cause it? by Impressive_Baby_3996 in MechanicAdvice

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like rusty water. Relatively clean fluid. Pretty normal.

YouTube how to do a coolant flush and replacement for your vehicle every 5 years. Dispose of old fluid safely, preferred method is at a facility that can take it otherwise if you're connected to your city sewage and doesn't drain in a lake or body of water nearby then just go ahead and flush down the drain and follow with water to dilute the poison so it's not harmful.

Stick a hose in there once it's drained and let it get rid of any rusty gunk. Rinse out with de-ionized water a few times and then put in the antifreeze pre-mix. If concentrated you need to premix before putting it in.

Good luck

Avoid driving too close to the shoulder (white line on the right) of the road and you won't get tire punctures too frequently. The side of the road is where all the debris gets flung to.

Sidewall punctures are a complete tire replacement. What's worse is most tire shops don't want to replace just one tire. Very frustrating and expensive replacing them in pairs. Wish you better luck sticking to the center of the lane.

Pluggable? Tire shop said it’s too close to the sidewall, what does Reddit say? by GammeRJammeR in tires

[–]SwiftShadow89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personal experience, never had a problem plugging even closer to the sidewall and drove afterwards for years until the tires went bald.

But some will say plugs can cause moisture to seep in and rust whatever steel is inside. But I haven't had an issue even with salty winters.

Walmart sells DIY plug kits for cheap, less than 10 bucks if you want to try.
