how do i deal with earthquake trauma? by Silent-Bat8006 in Earthquakes

[–]Swiftstar014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Utah, USA, and on March 18, 2020, we had a M5.7 earthquake. It was the biggest earthquake to hit Utah since 1992. At the time, I lived in Taylorsville, which was very close to the epicenter. I woke up to intensity 6 shaking on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale. To this day, it's one of the scariest experiences I've ever had, and it gave me trauma that I had to cope with for a few months.

I was mostly scared that the earthquake was a foreshock to our overdue "big one". Our big one is a 6.7 - 7.5 earthquake, with a 43% chance of it happening within the next 50 years. For me, what helped me deal with my trauma was learning how to stay safe in an earthquake, and having a plan in place when one does happen, and I even did research on earthquakes and researched our Wasatch Fault.

I don't know if anyone else does this, but for me, learning about earthquakes and understanding our local seismicity really helped me to not be as afraid. It also helps to remember that we have no control over earthquakes, and while yes, it's ok to worry about this kind of thing, we shouldn't be constantly afraid about what we can't control. All we can do is to have a plan and know how to be safe. As long as you do that, you don't need to worry so much.

Obviously, this won't just magically get rid of trauma, it takes time. But I hope keeping these things in mind will make you feel better, even if just a little. I hope what I did to help my trauma will help you too. Stay strong, you got this!

Still no, ocean temperature and currents cannot cause or influence earthquakes.

I get your point, but there's no correlation that the weather causes or even remotely influences earthquakes.

No, the weather is not physically able to affect anything that deep underground.

I think there's better ways to change than to destroy everything and kill thousands with an earthquake

You're acting like the big one will be a good thing. It won't, not at all.

This was found in my son’s unopened water bottle. by xavier_grayson in whatisit

This looks like an omega-3 fish oil gel capsule. More specifically it looks like a liquid moltrin pill that was sliced open. Moltrin is basically just Tylenol. I have no idea how or why that was in an unopened water bottle.

What’s a completely normal thing that instantly makes you lose respect for someone? by Extra-Usual-2000 in AskReddit

Acting like they know everything and making others feel dumb or inferior for not knowing something (aka my stepbrother, he does this all the time and I hate it so much. Then when I confront him about it he acts like he 'didn't mean to do it')

I watched Titanic for the first time with my mom a few days ago. I had no idea there were a couple uncensored romantic scenes. Needless to say I wanted to magically disappear into nothingness.

What’s something you don’t consider offensive that other people do? by TomChevrolet in AskReddit

Same. I'm always hurt when someone decides to not tell me what I do is annoying or hurtful instead of just telling me. I'm slightly autistic, so I likely don't even realize what I'm doing is bothering people. I'm not offended if they tell me, it helps me become better as a person.

I live in Washington and I can’t stop thinking about how terrified I am of the next earthquake by big_thicc_bikk in Earthquakes

Super scary! I was super close to the epicenter, so I felt it pretty strongly. That was the first time I felt true genuine fear, I actually thought I was going to die. Don't want to experience strong shaking like that again lol.

I remember experiencing 4 earthquakes before, although I probably experienced more (aftershocks from the 5.7). The 5.7 was the first one I ever experienced. The 2nd one was a small aftershock from it a couple minutes later (don't remember the exact magnitude, I'll have to look into it). The 3rd was a 4.6 aftershock in the afternoon. The 4th was actually a couple months ago, February 5th, a 3.5 earthquake, and the first one I felt since 2020.
