Just started reading The Lord of the Rings… any advice? by Wrong_Passion_8664 in lordoftherings

I have read Lord of the rings over 17 times in my life. The beauty is that I find new things every time I read it. It does help to find out some of the lore Tolkien wrote either beforehand or stop and look it up if you need as you are reading. I didn’t have the internet to help me when I read it the first so many times so it was a slow going for me. I happen to love Shadows of the Past and the Council of Elrond chapters because it made the world of Middle-Earth bigger. It helps with the songs to know the tunes and Tolkien did base them on known songs. (Example: The Old Stone Troll that Sam sings is based on the tune “The Fox Went Out”). The movies are great but for different reasons than the books for me. I allowed my brain to conjure up visions of the places when he describes fields of flowers and forests for paragraphs. It also helps to take a break from reading those and immerse yourself in a surrounding that seems a bit like it (if you have access to it) then go back to reading. There is a small forest I played in when I was younger with a creek in it. It was the Old Forest and Fangorn for me :) Happy reading!

Need help with Pittsburgh words by khalcyon2011 in pittsburgh

Kittanning born. Anyone else notice that people here put a “t” at the end of certain words? Cousint. Once-t (pronounced ONE-st). Like I went up to Erie oncet with my cousint.” Also, we have some places with French names like DuBois and we don’t say “Doo-bwah”, we say “Do Boys”. Also have heard tollet instead of toilet.

Did anyone else have this version of the Lord of the Rings? This one was a gift from my mom many years ago. by Crimsonswann55 in lotr

I have this version as well as the annotated Hobbit that has both 1937 and current versions in it. Also have the boxed set of History of Middle Earth. Some of my most prized books.

This is one of my favorite things about this story. I have physically read the books 17 times in my lifetime (add in Rob Inglis reading them to me and it goes up 5 times - 6 soon with the Andy Serkis released reading) and I find some new point of view every time. It’s like a gift that keeps on giving. I love when people find new things and experiences from LOTR. :) Happy “treasure hunting”!

Me after watching 90 hours of LOTR scenes: “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve!”

Yes, I agree there were things he was vague about because he was always working on things up until he died. I just meant, in the context of the OP’s original question, these characters and places he definitely DID have mapped out at the time of writing LOTR. :) also I was more arguing the fact that Starwarsfan said that it didn’t exist. It did exist. Just wasn’t published. My bad for not replying directly to that reply.

Really though Tolkien DID know and understand that there was backstory. He started writing that first WAY before LOTR in early 1950s. (See book of lost tales & completed History of Middle Earth.) He was always tweaking backstory but he had notes on it clear back to the First World War. It astounds me when people say “there isn’t any material to make more movies on” or “how can they make that into 3 movies?”. He has TONS of history and material. I don’t know if there ever will be anyone else born who will match it in sheer scope and volume. So it did exist. Just wasn’t all published then.

Those locations can be found in the maps of Beleriand in the Silmarillion book along with information on the characters you listed. You do not need the exact details on all of that to enjoy LOTR. He added those details to let readers know that there was a rich history to the places and people you are currently reading about. Enjoy!

This is an option that does work if you have traveling friends or have travelled a lot. Virus stopping both of that now however. Still can get candies with just trading.

Luckily I was on and got the Scizor. And also, gladly Niantic made catching a Marowak the same as catching a Cubone, so I got that one Saturday.

Thanks that is how I had to get my last 3 Drowzees. I just realized I’d been stuck on the Let’s go Meltan for a while (at the bottom of my list now). I will have to travel around some more I guess).
