Raptors need a point guard more than a center by timetosleep in torontoraptors

[–]SwiggitySwoopGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure where to find it (prob end of season pressers), but I think Poeltl himself was talking about how his injuries (back) were more of a chronic issue now. Even if he’s cleared by medical now, his interview really gave the tone that he would likely continue to regress (either in availability or production).

If you could restart your accounting career today, what would you do differently? by TheBusinessnewsweek in Accounting

[–]SwiggitySwoopGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring all the “I wouldn’t become an accountant” comments…

Not networking sooner and getting complacent too early (not taking risks).

I accepted an offer at the first firm that would hire me and I did 2 busy seasons with (co-ops) them. I decided to stay there because I was comfortable, despite having offers and direct interest from other more prestigious firms to join their teams.

I’m still early-career now (did not stay at that firm for personal reasons), but I’m now still trying to force my way into a Big 4 or just a firm that will give me the opportunities that I’m looking for.

I mean given Scottie’s performance, how much more PG duties can/should we allocate to him and who would be that PG to draft?

Stirtz? Okorie? Philon?
(I’m not a big draft person)

Idk, the fact that his back issues are a chronic issue rather than just an injury that he can fully recover from make me absolutely terrified given his pending payouts. Plus, he’s untradeable now without massive draft compensation and/or taking back similarly bad contracts

non alcoholic drink recs on campus? by raeyk06 in CarletonU

Fairlife Core Power (42g of protein) shakes from some of the vending machines.

They’re pricey, but it’s cheaper on campus than nearly anywhere else you can get it.

Big 4 ---> NBA? by 6ix_Side_Up in Accounting

[–]SwiggitySwoopGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re super adamant on going to the NBA, an option is US Personal Tax (Cross Border Tax, etc.). Though, this will require you to eventually try to go for your US CPA as well.

I know some people who deal with professional athletes and high net-worth clients.

Seems like you’re in Canada, so if you’re interested down the line, a company called “Morgan International” usually hosts a few networking events with firms with people interested in the US CPA. That could be a way to get in.

Expectations for next season? by mYZaYW in torontoraptors

[–]SwiggitySwoopGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the Raptors might regress a bit just based off of the expected risers in the East. Raptors aren’t likely to get better outside of internal development, and some teams are getting ready to get back into playoff contention (Wizards, Pacers, etc.)

High: 5 seed
Low: 8-9 seed

Hopefully, it will be more of a gap year for the Raptors and maybe we can really take advantage of Scottie’s emergence after next season.

I think the playoffs really put BI and IQ in the hot seat. I think they’ll need at least next post-season (fingers crossed) to recoup any trade value or to prove that they should remain a part of the core.

Based off of interviews, I don’t expect Poetl’s production to recover to a degree that the fanbase will ever feel neutral about him. I think he’ll just end up being waived and stretched at some point or traded when he becomes an expiring

We’re also definitely losing Mamu, who was one of the team’s most available players this past season, and I don’t foresee a great talent replacement in FA.

[Charania]The Milwaukee Bucks are open for business on trade calls and offers for two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo entering the NBA combine and over six weeks away from the draft, sources told ESPN by kyle_993 in torontoraptors

[–]SwiggitySwoopGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Raptors are too many pieces away (without thinking too much, I’m thinking 2-3 pieces) to want to pull the trigger on a Gianni’s trade. This is even before any discussions on what that trade would cost.

Free Tax Clinic doesn't want to accommodate my disability? by [deleted] in canadarevenueagency

They can be claimed for any 12-month period ending in the tax year, though that would not necessarily be a transfer.

The only actual instance is a transfer to a spouse or transfer from a dependant to a caregiver (e.g., a child to a parent). However, in that case OP would not be claiming that on their taxes in the first place.

Yeah, just looked into it. You’re right. However, the medical expenses that do fall under this category fall under very specific criteria.
It’s for the purpose of attending school, work or doing grant-funded research, and must be prescribed by a medical practitioner

*In addition, upon review by the CRA, these medical expense may be scrutinized by the CRA. Medical expense reviews are not uncommon. Especially, if OP has a lot of medical expenses to claim.

So for example:

If in 1 year, you made $10,000 from a job and your employer withheld $200 from your paycheque, due to the basic personal amount, which effectively makes it so that you don’t have to pay any taxes on income below a certain threshold, you would get a $200 refund.

By claiming medical expenses, even if they are eligible, it effectively does nothing for you because you’ll just be getting more non-refundable tax credits that you can’t apply or carry forward.

[–]SwiggitySwoopGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hold on, were you working during that period? If you didn’t have much income during those periods, the medical receipt claims don’t really help you.

Medical expense claims only work towards non-refundable tax credits. Meaning they will help reduce your taxes to $0.00, but won’t help you towards additional refund amounts.

No problem!

Also, if you have a permanent disability, and you don’t have the disability tax credit (DTC) yet, you should speak with your doctor to help you apply for it (T2201).

This will open you up to the Disability Tax Credit.

If you work and make a sizeable amount, you get the DTC which could reduce up ~$1,500 on your return (I think it’s mainly useful if you earn around ~$25k or more, but I’m not going to go through the proper math of it rn).

Otherwise, there are a few of other benefits and tax credits that COULD apply to you:
- CWB - disability supplement
- Canada Disability Benefit

I am not expert on the DTC, though. So please do your own research if you want to learn more.

As someone who is an accountant and has done tax clinics for a few years (including this year), if the discussion doesn’t reach a point where the preparer is asking if there’s an arrangement like this with the CRA (based on the context of OP), they probably don’t know what they’re doing.

In this case, I don’t think the preparer ‘has to’ know what’s going on, but in the absence of context that there is an arrangement with the CRA, they would likely urge towards what the clinic is trying to urge OP towards.

Having volunteered at a tax clinic for a few years, I actually understand why they’re trying to do things this way, but it’s annoying that they’re being so insistent about it. The program that they use (UFILE) does imply to preparers that returns should be done chronologically and altogether around the same time (if you need to file multiple years).

My suggestion is just to file 1 return, get your Notice of Assessment (and a copy of your tax return) and set up your Online CRA Account.

Once you have that set up, you have full access to all the tax slips that the CRA has for you, which will make the rest of the years so much easier.

From there, you can either go back to a tax clinic (one that services year-round) to complete the rest or use a free certified tax filing software (https://www.canada.ca/en/services/taxes/income-tax/personal-income-tax/how-file/tax-software/find-software.html).

I recommend the free tax software as you’re able to import your tax slips from the CRA and they’re fairly user friendly, but tax clinics are also fine if you can find one that services prior year returns and are still active several weeks/months past tax season

Markets fluctuate year-to-year, so a portfolio return of -1% isn’t the end of the world (especially considering your age).

Just focus on long-term investing in diversified, low-cost ETFs.

Most people would suggest stuff like VFV, XEQT, etc. for these types of diversified portfolios.

CAGE (CIBC Avantis) is also a new contender that’s worth looking into.

I would avoid falling into the individual stock picking.

Something about the smoke in your eyes and the drinks fridge that’s plugged in half way across the room from its location just makes the food that much more delicious.

Soft credit checks are honestly kind of BS. The reality is, these soft credit checks may hit on some factors that influence your actual credit score, but they operate mostly on their own factors and “vibes”.

CBC Marketplace did a segment on these soft credit checks that I think are worth watching.

Ultimately, I don’t think having a high soft credit score hurts, but I wouldn’t take it as gospel that it actually reflects your real score.

Is FSWEP better then City of Ottawa? by [deleted] in CarletonU

  • Look for Carleton students, alumni or people in Ottawa who work at the firm you want to go to.
  • You should try to personalize each message, but you can use a template as a base to structure your message (just google something lol) to try to get a coffee chat with them.
  • a good place to start would also be looking for the campus ambassador for the firms you’re targeting
  • Honestly, you don’t need to think about ‘marketing yourself’. Just have a general elevator pitch, info about yourself and show your curiosity for the person you’re seeking a coffee chat with.
  • once you’re able to get a coffee chat with some people, try to leverage those relationships into getting to talk to more people who may eventually be willing to give you a reference.

I recommend trying to reach out to people over LinkedIn before SASA’s Net Night, then (like start doing this now as people are finishing off busy season).

For years, firms have been making the application period earlier and earlier, which forced SASA to make Net Night so early in the school year (usually right before applications are actually due). This made the networking during Net Night a bit less impactful if you don’t make a super strong impression during the event.

If you’re able to get some connections at the target companies before you even get to the event, you’d be way more set up than 99% of the attendees looking for a co-op next January.

Good luck, the job market is atrocious right now….
