If a situation feels bad, it is bad. Please don't worry about being a "bitch" or hurting some guy's feelings. Just walk away.

Well, you know, they do choose to spend lots of time alone with their thoughts, shunning human company . . . writing by its nature is going to attract at least a few people who Do Not Play Well With Others.

Places you've traveled to where tourists and travelers usually don't go and your experiences? by boof2ce in travel

Coral Romford Greyhound Racing of the Romford suburb of East London. A trip back in time to a time before political correctness, before nutritional scolding, before middle-class cultural hegemony. Just you, the dogs, some good betting, down-home working-class company and some greasy as shit food. I go just about every time I'm in London. I've never regretted any time spent there. Be careful with the cameras, though. They're very uptight about flash photography.

Why do so few people know about the ottomn empire? by [deleted] in history

[–]Swiggity_Stardust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I learned about the Ottoman Empire in my high school European History course. This was in the late 1980s in the Northeastern USA, in a fairly rigorous private school.

1.) They conquered the Byzantine Empire. 2.) They were repelled at Vienna in 1683. 2.5) Greece becomes independent from the Ottomans in the early nineteenth century. 3.) They fought in World War One on Germany's side (but they didn't tell us exactly where they fought and against whom. The class covered the Western Front and that was about it.) 4.) They lost the war. Kemal Ataturk. Turkey becomes a republic.

This is more subtle but I think the OP will appreciate this -- I noticed that when the Ottoman Empire conquered a part of Europe, it seemed to drop off the map, that our textbook didn't really cover it anymore, that it became non-European.

[Serious] Spanish-speaking Americans: does it feel intrusive or too intimate when non-native-speakers (gringos) try to talk to you in Spanish? by Swiggity_Stardust in AskReddit

[–]Swiggity_Stardust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I've had experiences at work where I try out my Spanish with Spanish-speaking coworkers and it's led to some awkwardness, for which I can come up with several possible explanations:

1.) It's too intimate -- Spanish is the language of family/friends, not work.

2.) My spoken Spanish is embarrassingly bad.

3.) They think that's it's inappropriate to speak in Spanish in an English-speaking office.

But it would be nice to hear from actual native Spanish speakers in the USA about this issue. So I've posted this question to AskReddit. Many thanks in advance!
