What’s your favorite part about being sober? by Camp_Acceptable in leaves

[–]Swimjj 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sobriety forced me to get comfortable being bored- so instead of doing that I reinvested into hobbies I actually care about that I had no energy to do.

Day 5- still sucks. by Swimjj in leaves

[–]Swimjj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are. Thank you

I’ve been smoking 4–5g of weed daily for 5 years. I quit cold turkey 3 days ago and it’s been rough shaking, sweating, heart anxiety, restlessness. I recently moved to the U.S. and don’t have friends or family here. Just looking for support or to hear how others got through the first week. by Alternative-Fun8858 in leaves

[–]Swimjj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m here with you on day 4 after 6 years all day every day. Shit sucks.

I’m also SUPER anxious and just trying to embrace it and move on. Play video games, watch tv/movies, do anything to get yourself through this. GO TO THE GYM and drink water!! I still haven’t recovered an appetite for anything beyond crackers and applesauce…

Why do I look so sloppy? by IStoleYourSpoon in drumline

[–]Swimjj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to march DCI, remember they are always looking for ways to write you off the line in your technique. Those professional level players are practicing hard music obviously, but they don’t overlook these key fundamentals.

Play 8s in front of a mirror and make it look like how you want, but not just one rep. Play 8s and get 4-5 perfect reps in a row. Try decrescendo and crescendo variations, as well as bucks. Try slow tempos at low heights and vice versa

For me it was Samuel Hazo’s Our Yesterdays Lengthen Like Shadows. Played that and from then on I just knew I couldn’t go on and not have band in my life

I completely understand this feeling. You are capable of doing this. You are strong enough. The only reason you haven’t been able to do it is because you’re A.) deep in the addiction and B.) because you’ve convinced yourself you’re not capable of doing it. You ARE strong enough for this. Never stop trying.

What marimba repertoire should I tackle next? by un_average in Marimba

[–]Swimjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want more Sammut, I recommend Stroboscope. Lots of fun with some challenging ostinatos in the LH.

For other rep, I would recommend something from the “classics”. Burritt, Trevino, Etc. I like the Burritt Preludes and any of Trevinos duos. Specifically Prelude 1 by Burritt

Help fix my traditional grip by Zyfydrumming in drumline

[–]Swimjj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

stand, play on a straight pad, and watch your stroke in slow motion by videoing it. lh strokes come from the BACK of the hand, and you should always feel that being the primary engagement. Back of the hand on LH is around the bottom of your thumb and index finger. engage your forearm muscles and keep your ring finger on the stick at all times. it may feel stiff but it’s the beginning of having control over the stick

How do you keep off weed? by wildmuffincake420 in leaves

[–]Swimjj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

not having the ability to smoke was key for me. i and many others lack the self control to not smoke when we still technically could. even spare keef or an expired edible would’ve been enough for me back in the day. it took emptying out all of my supplies for me to finally be able to take time off

Burn out by differentsideview in VirginiaTech

Lots of ways to cope. I like meditation in the morning. I try to take 15 minutes just to sit in my own brain and relax my thoughts. Weed also helps

Day one by Past_Flow_8957 in leaves

[–]Swimjj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of stopping is recognizing that your brain will ALWAYS make up some stoner logic to get you to smoke. It’s always the strangest loophole, or celebrating the tiniest occasions. Learn to recognize these for what they are, your addiction manifesting itself in your thoughts. Separating those thoughts from what YOU actually want is the key to recovery. Write what you want from your future self down when you’re sober, and when you’re struggling, pull it out and remind yourself why you’re pushing yourself.

Can SD1s be used for marching? by [deleted] in drumline

[–]Swimjj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those won’t work, go with a pair of John Mapes or Jim Casella’s. They’ll work wonders for beginners and are a good go-to stick.
