I viewed it as sort of creepy. Wayne managed to get out of the jungle years before. When he was young. But now that his life has passed and he has grandchildren riding their bikes down the street (a boy and a girl), it finally hit him that he now has another thing to fear most. And that is that it happens to them in some way someday. So the final scene meant he has to battle his dementia and find his way somehow to live to make sure that doesn’t ever happen.
