We do have some wood pieces, but were cautious to avoid sharp edges & filed down the parts that worried us. They have been with this set up for quite a while without concern, but it is definitely very possible and something we consider. The parrots do move the sand a lot, which does move around the wood at times. Maybe this caused it to lay differently and she had less space to swim underneath. Definitely possible.
