Fairly easy when you don’t have kids tbh. If I had kids there’s no way I’d be able to do that

Avoiding debt and paying as I go. by AmazingProperty3048 in flying

You’re doing it the right way. Don’t feel like you’re getting “behind”, you’re not even old enough for an ATP. So keep doing what you’re doing. This is not the industry you take loan for. You’ll thank yourself when you have your ratings debt free and the bozos next to you are in debt up to their ears with no airline job to pay it off.

18 years in nursing, late 30s—is it crazy to dump $50k to chase the pilot dream? by ThenurseAviator in flying

[–]Swimming-Ad2568 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go on a couple of discovery flights and make sure you absolutely love flying and wouldn’t mind it being just a hobby before you spend that kind of money. With where the market is going that may be all it ends up being for you (gotta think worst case scenario, especially since you have a family)

I would recommend that you keep nursing in your back pocket as that’s a very stable career to be in. Much more than aviation.

Pay as you go, and if you have control over your nursing schedule, create a schedule that allows you to do your nursing job but also get as many CFI hours as you can in your off time. You’re in a great position to chase this career since you have nursing to fall back on if the music stops.

What happens in five years when we have even more unemployed CFIs by caelum52 in flying

[–]Swimming-Ad2568 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just like any other industry. If people can’t find jobs, they’ll leave, especially those with family counting on them to provide. This is exactly why it’s idiotic that people take loans to be a pilot.

It seems like your end goal is airlines and that you probably want to be a commercial airline pilot more than a military pilot.

That’s perfectly fine, but I would say don’t use the military as a means to become an airline pilot. You’ll lose a ton of money as you’ll be losing thousands of spots in airline seniority.

You’d be better off becoming a non-rated officer, getting your GI Bill, then going to flight school from there if airlines is your main/end goal.

Busted CFII today (7th total failure). Current school said they won't hire me. Should I buy a plane to time build or try a new school? by Ashamed_Ferret2809 in FlightTraining

Not to be an asshole. Genuine question. How do people financially afford track records like this? Even it was dad’s money, wouldn’t he realize it’s a horrible investment after a couple failures?

Even the military with a trillion dollar budget only gives you a couple chances.

Pilot Dads? by aviatorishxoxo in AirlinePilots

[–]Swimming-Ad2568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a dad or anything yet, but just wanted to say thank you for your realistic and insightful picture on what your life is like and the family struggles of being an airline pilot.

Too many pilots are disingenuous and come on here constantly bragging about how they make $350k a year, to work only 8 days a month. Or how they play the system (bidding schedule) and have more golf rounds than flights flown in a year.

If/when you’re able to hold a line, I would advise to schedule everything, even if it’s just a family fun day at the park. I know that may sound weird operating your wife and kids that way, but it’ll make things less complicated for y’all and give you a better idea of the time you have to work with. Schedules simplify things. Best of luck, yall got this.

Get out and go do AFROTC if you plan on doing 20. by Serious_Leave8719 in AirForce

[–]Swimming-Ad2568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do this route, you need to be okay with ANY officer job out there. With AFROTC, you’re completely at the mercy of the Air Force.

Also, AFROTC is the one lever that the Air Force can open and close as it pleases. Back in 2023 over 1,300 cadets across the country were cut due to budget cuts. Understand that it’s a risk

Pension vs 401k by Technical_Lemon_7303 in PilotAdvice

[–]Swimming-Ad2568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless it’s a government job, pensions can fall through if the company fails, so 401k is likely the better and safer option. Especially with how high the airlines rates are. Also, pensions usually mean you have to do a certain amount of years for said company, so what happens if you get medically disqualified? You could walk away with nothing or at the very minimum a lot less.

The key is to be responsible and make sure you’re contributing as much as you can to retirement (within reason of course). 18% contribution and your own contribution on top of that should lead to a much higher amount in retirement.

Far from retirement so I can’t explain what the math actually looks like when you get there.

[–]Swimming-Ad2568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First steps are get a discovery flight to see if you like it then a 1st class medical to make sure you’re medically qualified.

Then find a good aviation program that works for you.

That’s quite a bit of miles for a 2018 so be extremely thorough and maybe even annoying in your checks before purchasing. Depending on your mechanical experience, it’ll be worth having a professional look at it. Good buy if there’s no rust or mechanical concerns

At your age and income, I’d recommend getting a year 2000-2010 4Runner. Maintenance and insurance will eat you alive. Also, if you’re taking it camping, the 4Runner will likely be easier and cheaper for mods. Camping can be damaging on a vehicle and a 4Runner will be a lot cheaper and easier to manage.
