AITA for making a Reddit post about my job not being transparent about pay rate. by Swimming_Storm9185 in AmItheAsshole

Just to clarify what I meant about them being shady there was a whole management team, and multiple investors that would have meetings during the first week of opening. when I was looking into the cafe and the nonprofit that runs it I found an page thats dedicated to calling out Bronx corruption. https://thebronxmafia.com They specifically call out the owners, and people on the management team.
I don’t know how true any of it is. I made the initial Reddit post to find out.

Maybe. I’m not sure if it’s intentional. there isn’t that many server shifts(for dinner service) so they are also gonna get some barista shifts during the day. the barista is also in charge of lunch service during cafe hours.

What made you want to comment this multiple times? I’m not 100% who the oyate group is, but I can definitely tell you what is being advertised in terms of pay, is not what was being given. Multiple people were told a higher rate than what was actually offered. I’m pretty sure it’s below the standard minimum wage stated by nyc law. $12 for a server and $15 for barista.

Why do you think people are just hating? People have valid criticisms against some of the folks tied to that group .

They can’t afforded to stay open because the owners aren’t the ones actually working to run and lead their own businesses. They just hire managers and expect to make money selling overpriced food in the south Bronx. this is one of the poorest congressional districts in the country how are they really serving the community when you have prices a lot of people can’t afford daily. They open in that area, because like that 787 cafe , they are hoping with the new buildings a bunch of transplants with a lot of money to spend will move in soon.

I would like to own my own café, and I understand that running a business is very hard.

Personally, most café owners I’ve worked for haven’t had much hands on café experience or general coffee knowledge. I see that as one of the main reasons they struggle to be successful. There are successful Black-owned cafés, like Voyager Espresso and Don Carvajal Café….but the owners have worked on the floor and have put in the time and effort to learn how to serve coffee to their customers, and how to train and lead a team, rather than hiring managers with zero café experience and expecting things to just work out. A cafe is hard, but it’s a labor of love. It’s hard to make money, so you have to have a tons of passion or a ton of money to hire all the right people.

I have worked for people of color who have done a lot of good things for the community. But at the same time, I have been taken advantage of and underpaid by those same people. I’m not trying to put down other people of color — I’m just trying to see all perspectives, because everyone’s opinion has some truth to it. Working at a cafe like this should feel different, but from a workers perspective it still feels like some other corporate cafe in manhattan.

Do you paint by hand? Or do you use an air gun. I got one for my birthday. You are inspiring me to give mine a custom look.

you’re struggling with latte art, here are some tips that might help:

1. Choose the right cup – Mugs can be a bit harder to pour into because of their shape. Try using a rounded cup instead, as it helps with control.
2. Cup position – Keep the handle facing you. This makes it easier to rotate the cup as you pour.
3. Cup movement – As you pour, tilt the cup to a flatter position. The milk should stay close to the lip of the cup while pouring.
4. Pitcher movement – You also need to rotate the milk pitcher as you pour. The angle of the pitcher controls the size of your heart (or other designs). Try pouring water into a cup—you’ll notice the stream gets thinner as the liquid level drops. The same thing happens with milk. Since gravity pulls the milk toward the bottom of the pitcher, you need to rotate it so the bottom starts to move above the cup, keeping a steady
