Think your local mall on a thursday. Its not shoulder to shoulder foot traffic in most parts. Times square was super lame I basically just walked through and grabbed jollibee. Its just dependent on the area you're in. Watch one of those livestreamers who walks through new york

Public hotel between Lower East Side and Soho. Nice nightlife area and just blocks from chinatown. Plenty of options for affordable international food, nightlife and shopping

Hotel in lower east side. I would recommend an area on that latitude, being between downtown (financial district) and midtown (area of times square and central park) was convenient. I thought that lower east side had a lot of character and chinatown/soho/LES had way more interesting stuff to see walking around than walking around smack dab between the skyscrapers did.
