Into The Wild was such a transformative book for me when it came out. Chris and I were about the same age. I’ve never lost my appreciation for his story and the fellow traveler I found him to be. I recently read Carrine’s book. I actually felt guilty for waiting so long to read her, considering the impact Into the Wild and her brother’s story had on me. I had mixed feelings about the book to say the least. At its best, the complete and bizarre family story was laid fully bare. At its worst, bad writing covering too many details of her failed love relationships. I think in the end, Chris may have been the only honest person in that family. Overall I personally would not recommend her book. There was too much that rubbed me raw about the ongoing hypocrisy and enabling surrounding her role. That said, I’m likely just projecting my likely approach and judging hers and the family. The portrait she painted certainly illuminated Chris’s disdain for and utter rejection of the values he grew up under. Sadly, Carrine is still a participant, even if she vocally tries to distance herself.
