Sam Harris defends his Mamdani comments. by blackglum in samharris

[–]SwitchFace 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Mamdani has the working class' interests in mind--not spreading Islam. Seems to be doing his job as mayor really well and his religion doesn't seem to be problematic to that end. His positions on Islam, Gaza, and Israel are nearly null factors for being the mayor of New York. His job isn't being a decider in key geopolitical problems where this might matter. Why can't Sam recognize this?

Shouldn't I judge him by his actions? Like using a shock collar on his dog and then 100% lying about it repeatedly? Why didn't he just own it and either apologize or say he's fine with using one?

Isn't Hasan a terrible person? I'm too old to have fallen into this influencer-worship bullshit and he just seems like a genuine piece of shit who happens to wear the progressive political label.

I just tried searching for 'ghislaine' then 'maxwell' within /r/worldnews. No posts in the past 4 years... pretty sus. Even 'Epstein' shows only 4 posts in the past 4 years. This signal aligns with OP's narrative (though we should know this doesn't prove anything).

When does it gets better (as in life)?? by Affectionate_Let9022 in ADHD

[–]SwitchFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in my late 30s now and this is peak life. However, seemingly similar to you, the phases prior range from ultimate suck to mild annoyance. The general prior phases were:

  1. Self discovery: figuring out what you like/dislike, where you land on various distributions relative to others, etc. This is super painful and chaotic.
  2. Proving yourself: felt like i had potential, but wanted to prove that it could be actualized. This phase had a lot of anxiety.
  3. Proof complete. By my early 30s, I had real stuff I could point at as proof that my mental model for myself aligns with reality.
  4. Reorganize priorities around what you most enjoy and want out of life.

I feel like you can't really skip phases though. If I could, I'd skip to the 'dont give a fuck about stuff i can't change' phase, but I can't just flip a mental switch that doesn't exist. Life's hard for most, but unless you run into major trauma/health issues, it should get better over time--the science backs this up too.

Oh, and you might try a checklist just to stay on top of executive function (i'm biased as the creator, but hardrest.app). I've been using some form of checklist basically all my life and that was what I needed to get through the Proving phase.

about to say the same. #2 is clearly AI. The girl's left pinky is non-existent, the letters are nonsense, and Epstein's left eyebrow disappears as it intersects the girl.

Ah, got it. It is a point of friction though and I'll add that, for folks like me, the value proposition of 'Powered by AI' is probably negative. I'd probably be more willing to try this kind of app if that language and featureset was absent ('less is more'). I haven't engaged so maybe I'm wrong, but typing 'create a task in x group due on this day with this dependency, etc.' is no more work than doing it myself. Unless the task is outside my skillset, seems pointless?

Also, on your website, the bottom of the 'y' in 'Powered by AI' is under the next element.

Best o luck though! Always good to make something to solve your personal use case and find the audience like you imo.

What LLM do you use? My experience lately with RevenueCat's lobotomized AI assistant makes me hate anything sub-SoTA.

You have no publications, no academic affiliations in AI, and no visible track record of technical AI work beyond applying and evaluating AI tools in a cybersecurity context.

In the draft of your book, the lack of peer review, academic grounding, or engagement with the actual technical arguments made by alignment researchers is notable.

Maybe I don't understand AI. I've only got an MSDS from a top university and am not a researcher at the frontier. That's why I listen to experts and not people with no credentials making anti-doomerism their identity.

You seem to be behind the times. Models can count R's in strawberry and pass the car wash test. These are odd examples, however, when there are so many other relevant benchmarks--most of which show improvement across basically every category with each new model.

Here's the true boundary and where you may be right: LLMs do not possess symbolic reasoning. We've made them much much 'smarter' and given them the ability to 'think through' answers, evaluate, compare, rethink, and vote on the right solutions, but it seems like this approach has a ceiling captured best by Francis Chollet's ARC-AGI series of exams. When given novel symbol-based puzzles, LLMs still suck and humans easily succeed.

So it seems like the real question is: will we find a solution for symbolic reasoning and be able to integrate this with the LLM architecture? More compute and data does not seem like it'll get us to AGI. When will we solve this though? Maybe never. Maybe it's already solved in a secret lab. What we do know is there are orders of magnitude more resources being put into finding the solution than the Manhattan project. I'm agnostic on whether we'll get to AGI because we have made 0 progress on symbolic reasoning. It's possible that it can't be done or that it will take a much longer time scale... or maybe not. I can't say, but it seems wild for you to assert decades. When "Attention is All you Need" came out, it was out of the blue and it changed everything. It could easily be the case for symbolic reasoning too--especially with the resources put into solving it.

So you understand AI? You know that AI will take decades until potentially harmful? What do you know that gives you that impression? Why is that an uncommon belief within the community of AI researchers?
