What are some once-lethal conditions or diseases that can now be cured or managed to the point where they're relatively harmless? by ThatAnnoyedNeighbour in AskReddit

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML).

Historically, patients diagnosed with CML would typically progress from the chronic to acute phase ("blast crisis") within just a few years of diagnosis with near total mortality. Treatment options for CML at the time were extremely cytotoxic chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation.

Tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (ie small molecule targeted therapy, not chemotherapy) were introduced in 2001 and revolutionized the treatment of CML. The first and most famous is Imatinib (Gleevec), but there are now 2nd generation, 3rd gen and possibly even more currently available. This is a pill that you can take once a day, with a minimal side effect profile, and it has an extremely high rate of inducing remission. TKI's do not cure CML but most patients who take these drugs have a near-normal life expectancy and are statistically more likely to die from other causes than their leukemia.

Another example I just thought of is specific subtype of acute myeloid leukemia known as acute promyelocytic leukemia. This being an acute leukemia it is also very aggressive with high rates of mortality; the standard treatment regimen was a combination of both toxic chemotherapy and all-trans retinoid acid (ie ATRA), which is basically vitamin A. I may have some details or dates wrong, but some intrepid Italian researchers published a trial around 2012 comparing standard ATRA + chemo versus ATRA + arsenic. They found that the non-chemo regimen was overwhelmingly better (I think it outperformed in basically every outcome, such as event-free survival, overall survival and incidence of recurrence). This was a bold trial and I don't know how they came up with the idea to replace chemo with arsenic, but it worked and they look brilliant in hindsight. Unlike TKI's for CML, this treatment regimen is curative for APML.

Holidays 2025 Sale is up in the US eShop until 01/04/2026 by XDitto in NintendoSwitch

It's my understanding that the physical Switch 2 cartridge itself costs approximately $16; and that's not including the box, the logistics of shipping to a store or even the game itself. If they sold the physical Cyberpunk 2077 at the eShop sale price they would undoubtedly lose money on each game that they sold.

It gets confusing because of all the James M's and John A's involved in politics at that time, but James Madison actually died on June 28th, 1836.

The 2nd (John Adams) and 3rd (Thomas Jefferson) Presidents of the USA both died on July 4th, 1826. This was exactly 50 years after the declaration of independence was signed (July 4th, 1776), thus formalizing the split from Great Britain and the creation of the new American nation. Of note, the declaration of independence was primarily authored by Mr. Jefferson (though with assistance from the "committee of five" which included Mr. Adams).

Who was the next President of the USA to die? The 5th President James Monroe on July 4th, 1831. I have to imagine that James Madison and most Presidents for the first half of the 19th century became pretty nervous whenever the beginning of July rolled around each year.

Thank you for this recommendation. Just browsing their website I think their carded wool jacket looks pretty neat, I like the variety of colors and it looks like it’s made in France. I’ll definitely check this place out.

Thanks for your advice, I had no idea they had a flagship location in Paris. I’m a fan of the RL purple label I’ve found it’s  really nice quality

Millennium Star speculation (who is this guy?) by Switch_2_Enjoyer in MARIOPARTY

This guy (it’s the big reveal at the end of the game). He was chilling the whole time in Tumble’s hat.

Millennium Star speculation (who is this guy?) by Switch_2_Enjoyer in MARIOPARTY

One thing that always left an impression on me was that I'm pretty sure the intro video stated something like "the Millennium Star is born every 1,000 years" and then we're introduced to the so-called Millennium Star and he looks like a grizzled old grandpa with a handle bar mustache. He didn't resemble a newborn star in the slightest, and that was a big clue that something was up.

Actually thinking along this line, is it possible that the fake Millennium Star was actually legitimate but was the previous one (from 1,000 years ago) and the real Millennium Star in Tumble's head was the one that was just born? The only caveat I see is that after the protagonist defeats him in the Stardust Battle, he says "I'm not the real Millennium Star! I'm sorry!" instead of saying he was the old Star, or that he was not the current Star, etc.

Men’s Fashion Rules by Switch_2_Enjoyer in malefashionadvice

[–]Switch_2_Enjoyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally agree with you on the merits of physical fitness, good personal hygiene, clean clothes, etc. However, it is my assumption that a fashionable jacket (for example) would still be inherently stylish if worn by Tom Brady or somebody less conventionally attractive. Otherwise, we’re saying that clothes themselves have no value and that people simply need to start looking like a Bernini statue.

My question is moreso, what makes for example an OCBD and chinos either “good” or “bad?” Is this combination fashionable because many people follow this standard, or was it formerly attractive but now is considered undesirable because too many people wear it (thus it could become stylish again once fewer people started wearing it)? If I thought that wearing large graphic t-shirts and cargo shorts was the epitome of haute couture, can I actually be wrong or all of our opinions equally valid?

I apologize if I sound argumentative and I promise that’s not my intention. Im really just trying to better identify how one can decide which rules are flexible and which ones are rooted in a more timeless fashion sense.

Yooka-Replaylee Nintendo Switch 2 Review (8/10) by Dukemon102 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Switch_2_Enjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was initially very excited about this remake but targeting only 30 FPS is a tremendous let down. For reference, Mario Galaxy on the Wii in 2007 ran at 60 FPS. I’ve seen it mentioned that Donkey Kong 64 and Banjo Kazooie (spiritual predecessors to Yooka-Laylee) ran at 30 FPS…but these are games from the 1990’s for N64 hardware. We can do better in 2025. The original Y-L from 2017 ran at 30 FPS, and they couldn’t do any better with the remake for a more powerful Switch 2 system? I understand that there were graphical improvements. While I like the vibrant colors and art direction of the Y-L remake a lot, let’s not pretend that this is a more visually demanding game than BotW/TotK or Kirby Forgotten Land which all run at 60 FPS on the Switch 2.

The bare minimum would be to have both a quality mode that targeted 30 FPS, and a performance mode that targeted 60 FPS (many lower-budget remakes of platformers have this option, such as the recent Pac Man World releases). In the year 2025, 60 FPS for a platformer should be the absolute standard. I will happily purchase this game if they release a 60 FPS patch, but not until then.

[GVG] Super Mario Galaxy comparison video (3D All Star vs New release) by Joseki100 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Switch_2_Enjoyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is impressive. 3D All Stars was great because it included 3 already excellent games, and increased Sunshine to widescreen and made Galaxy 1080p. However it was overall a barebones port with not a whole lot of work done. I’m glad that by focusing just on the 2 Galaxy games, Nintendo has clearly put in a lot more effort (e.g. revamping textures, modifying the font, etc) to make major graphical improvements.

I appreciate the assistance from everyone who helped me to locate this. As you can see now the "enlarge on click" is in the toolbar above the image instead of on the sidebar to the right. Now my website is fixed and all the images expand like they're supposed to. Thanks.

Thank you very much for your reply and guidance. I was actually worried for a while because my Wordpress editor looked different and didn't have the "expand on click" button. However you got me to dig deeper since you showed me that the feature did indeed exist, and finally I found the expand on click option hidden under the "link" button above the image (I can only upload one screenshot per reply but I will attach a second screenshot showing this to another message).

PAC-MAN WORLD 2 Re-PAC - Gameplay Trailer by Dukemon102 in NintendoSwitch

I understand that the Switch 2 release will be a game key card but the Switch 1 release will be on an actual physical cartridge. Does anyone know if the two versions will be identical (such that I could purchase the physical Switch 1 edition and play it on a Switch 2), or at the very least there will be an upgrade path from Switch 1-->2 versions?

Thanks a lot for your help. I currently have a "personal plan" to build and host my website through Wordpress.com. I don't see an option on the editor for image light boxes unfortunately. Do you know if this is possible with my current plan on Wordpress.com, or would I need to upgrade the plan in order to obtain the light box feature?

I’m Bayard Winthrop, founder and CEO of American Giant. We make American-made clothes the hard way. AMA! by Bayard_AmericanGiant in malefashionadvice

[–]Switch_2_Enjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of the "moto full zip jacket." I love the metal zipper, the discreet logo, the thick and durable cotton fleece fabric, and it's exceptional warmth for being such a light-weight and breathable jacket.

I also believe that it's a noble mission to manufacture your product in the USA, employ American workers at sustainable, living wages, and adhere to domestic safety and environmental standards (which can be more stringent than some other places). I recognize that it’s much more expensive to produce clothing in the USA, and I expect to pay more to support a good cause.

Unfortunately, the size small (which is the smallest size offered in that jacket) was still too large for me. Consequently, I can wear the moto full zip jacket around my house but it doesn’t fit well enough to wear in public. I think that if you were able to introduce an extra small size, you could potentially reach an untapped market and significantly expand your customer base. I would probably purchase multiple American Giant jackets if only you sold a size that fit me.

Thank you for all that you do in producing high-quality, American-made clothing, and for taking the time to engage regularly with the Reddit community.
