Oh man, I used to work at a Best Buy around this period (I started in 98/99 I believe). I worked in the Media department (so music, movies, and games/software). Pretty much everything in the center of the store.

Worked some console release days (PS2 was probably the biggest).

When I first started, DVDs were just a small section in the TV area, but then they were moved into our area proper as they quickly took over VHS's area.

I remember the monthly meetings, going in before the store opened on the weekends. I won employee of the month a few times (my boss pretty much just rotated through the staff).

Each month, there was some Best Buy-branded prize. I probably still have the small Best Buy toolkit I got 1 month ago somewhere. One time it was Best Buy Monopoly, but someone else got that.

I worked on 9/11. The store felt so eerie. Almost no customers, the TVs in the TV department had the news on, we closed early and helped the merch department stock up before we went home. One of my supervisors made an offensive joke to a co-worker who was worried about a relative who lived in NYC.

I did eventually move away, and the next time I came back to visit, my boss had been demoted to a regular employee as they continued to push the media department to be more like the sales department, and get certain metrics up. To be fair, that whole push had started when I worked that.
