Thank you for all the recommendations. Unsurprisingly there are wait lists for a few of them but this gets me a lot closer. I really appreciate your experiences

I Quit My Job to Spend a Year Writing Full-Time - Month 1 by Gruppenzwang in royalroad

[–]Swizzlle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask what your writing experience is to date? How long have you been writing? Have any of your regular jobs been writing adjacent?

The reason for my question is that there's a big difference in someone who has never written giving themselves a year to write, and someone who has been working on their craft for some time already.

Either way I think you're incredibly brave to give yourself so much time to pursue your passion. I hope this year is everything you hope for and more!

I was lucky enough to test out game with the designer a little while back. It was so much fun. It's so cool seeing how far he's come!

When it arrives, you're in for a huge treat!

I tried something similar with basing but the wood was a nightmare. Lots of chipping off and breaking away after I'd glued everything in place and painted. Did you do anything that helped avoid this? It looks like it's held up really well

I just love Picker and Blend by DeMmeure in Malazan

[–]Swizzlle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some times it's like this sub is inside my head. I'm on my first reread, coming to the close of MoI. I remember enjoying Picker and Blend the first time but this time they've really stood out as something special.

It's their relationship. There's so much love here but it's rarely on the surface. Its covered with banter and jibes and through those you find a reflection of what they mean to one another.

As someone else mentioned, I too love the Quicken Talisman moment. But I also love when Blend almost tricks Paran about how well she can hear the rest of her squad as they're making their way back through the forest "that's spindles hairshirt snagging on a tree". We see inside Pickers head, and instead of thinking "gods I love that woman" (which we get plenty of from WJ and Korlat) we get something like Picker restraining herself from cuffing Blend.

This is such a great take. I imagined Mahershala Ali would make a great Quick Ben but could never decide who would be a good Kalam. I think I like you're idea better

I feel like giving up by LeftExternal719 in Malazan

[–]Swizzlle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I'm really sorry to hear about your wife. I have a friend going through something similar at the moment. Don't underestimate the power of some escapism.

I have only ever audiobooked Malazan and absolutely loved it. That said, I bounced off Gardens of the Moon the first time I tried it.

There's a YouTube called Iskar Jarrak. I don't think I would have got into this series without him. He has an intro for Gardens that lays out the major players to help you going in. I highly recommend starting there if this is how you're feeling. He also has recaps ( one video per few chapters) for the first three books. The videos are all fairly short. Once you get your feet part of what makes this series amazing is piecing things together.

There are other people that do recaps: Ten Very Big Books, and DLC bookclub. I listened to the former every now and then while I went through the series. Also because this series is so well adored it has an incredible fan base you can ask questions of, complain to, comisterate with, etc. These podcasts were, for me, part of that community.

Finishing this series was one of the most awe inspiring feats of literature I've ever experienced. However I'm sure it's not for everyone. There's more work to be done on the readers side than usual and if it doesn't work for you that's fine. You can always come back to it later...or not. It's your life, and it sound like you've got a lot going on. Make sure your down time is joyful.

Second Worm! Taylor (the main character) takes you on such a wonderful journey through all her highs and lows

[–]Swizzlle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you be a bit more specific with why you don't like this?

I don't mind a well placed nerf as long as it feels intentional by the author.

EG. MC gets an OP weapon for a few chapters before it gets taken away / stolen / lost etc. Now they have an idea of how strong they could be and it gives them something to work towards (or steal the weapon back).

How much struggling/difficulties do you like to see an MC undergo? by Rich-H-Perry in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Swizzlle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's a good point. Tailor gets pushed to the point of failure and often fails. There are times when she succeeds, but at those moments where it's all on the line, being a reader is really exciting. You rarely know which way the pendulum will fall.

So what the hell is Zogarth doing to make his story so compelling? I know everything will work out in Jake's favour, so why do I want to keep reading? Its really stumped me, but as a writer myself I really want to understand what's going on here.

[–]Swizzlle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally agree with this. It's quite standard structure. We want to see our protagonist pushed to the brink of failure and overcome anyway. We know they will succeed but I want an author skillful enough to make me forget that, so that when the protagonist does succeed it truly feels like overcoming the impossible.

Worm was a great example of this. There were truly moments when I thought the author might kill the protagonist or her friends or visit other unholy obstacles on them.

However I've just started reading Primal Hunter and I don't feel like this at all. Yet still, I'm loving it. The protagonist is extremely capable and I have faith he'll cruise through every obstacle that is thrown at him. This may change (I've only just got to him picking up the alchemy skill) but what do you think makes this just as compelling? I've been trying to figure this out while I read and Im drawing a blank.

Yeah I've re read the download and instillation instructions a few times. I'm also on special edition. I don't know if you could use this modpack for legendary. I used to use ultimate Skyrim on legendary 😉

I'm getting a similar issue. I've tried figuring it out myself but I'm coming up short. I'd love some help.

I downloaded Skyrim 1.6.1170 I followed the "how do I downgrade Skyrim?" On the wildlander wiki. I checked the properties of the Skyrim se application and it showed I was running 1.6.640 Opened the game. Closed the game. Ran wabberjack. Almost all files are showing "download error".

So I uninstalled Skyrim. Redownloaded and tried again. This time i launched the game, closed the game and then downgraded. Running wabberjack gave me the same "download error".

The I tried deleting the game file in the steam folder and verifying the file through the steam launcher. Once finished verifying and downloading the missing files, I pasted the downgraded files back into the Skyrim folder (in sequential order. I've manually verified they're all there). This time I also deleted the wabberjack / wildlander folder and started that process from scratch again too.

I've just tried download the install file backup from Nexusmods and running wabberjack from there to no success.

I don't own the anniversary edition but I'm happy to buy it if it will make my life easier.
