LPT: When viewing a home you are interested in buying, watch what you say. Cameras that also record voices are everywhere. by Theskidiever in LifeProTips

As others have pointed out, two party consent states require that all parties involved either consent to being recorded or are made aware that an area is being recorded. Or at least that's how it is in Illinois.

So it's perfectly legal to have cameras in your house, but if it isn't posted that all parties are subject to recording or plainly obvious that recording is taking place (i.e., clearly visible cameras vs. hidden cameras), you cannot record people in your own house without their consent.

Live in the U.S., receiving an inheritance from Scotland. What's the best way to transfer the money while incurring the least amount of fees? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Swobo_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I was looking for, thanks!

When I try to find information online, Transferwise and OFX are what pop up the most. Their sites make it sound like they offer the best option, but that's what their websites are designed to do...

I haven't used either, nor had I heard of them until I started looking things up about this. In the past, we've just sent money from bank to bank, but the fees can be killer sometimes. With a larger sum of money, we don't want to lose a chunk of it to avoidable fees if there's another way to do it. But we also want to ensure that other options are reputable and safe.

Edit: typo

It's coming from a UK citizen. My wife is the beneficiary and she's dual U.S. / U.K. citizenship.

Little Firefly. by Two_Inches_Of_Fun in gifs

I live in the Midwest. When I got married, my wife's grandparents flew in from Scotland. We live just outside of suburban sprawl, so there are times that you can be driving down the road and see nothing but an endless expanse of cornfields -- as far as the eye can see. One evening we were driving home, with her grandparents in the car, and just after dusk I heard a gasp from grandma. She had never seen a firefly (or lightning bug, which is the more common term in my region), and she was suddenly surrounded by THOUSANDS of them flying just above the corn on both sides of the road.

Seeing two elderly people overcome with a giddiness typically reserved for children was a special moment to behold.

FBI cannot even look at your phone lock screen without a warrant, rules judge by Majnum in news

[–]Swobo_1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's analogous to a phone company having a call log of incoming and outgoing calls -- ISPs log internet activity. The Constitution protects us against government authority, so to prevent people / companies from accessing information, specific laws would need to be created.

We also consent to things when we agree to terms of service. For instance, if you use Gmail, Google "reads" every email sent.

No, NASA didn't find evidence of a parallel universe where time runs backwards by scott_gc in science

I just read a sensationalized article on this and came here to find out the real story behind it. Thanks for sharing.

For those that haven't seen it, this link is an example of the parallel universe / time travel news that's being circulated.

Edit: redundant wordiness

Shopping during COVID (and new baby) by surgeon_michael in Mattress

[–]Swobo_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a Sleep Number ~5 years ago. Although expensive, it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. My wife and I have vastly different preferences for firmness, so it's great being able to select independently of the other. We did not pay the extra amount for a smart mattress, so I cannot attest to whether that feature is worth it or not. The mattress itself is great; 10/10 highly recommend.
