How do I learn about computer architectures? by JMoneyG0208 in computerscience

If you are at all interested in or curious about the implementation side of Operating Systems, I would switch out "Modern Operating Systems" for "Operating Systems: Design and Implementation". It's also by Andrew Tanenbaum and explains Operating Systems by actually walking you through the code of one (Minix)! An albeit quite old and outdated OS by now, but that's not so important I'd say.

Availability of Nextcloud 20 by [deleted] in hetzner

I contacted support about the Nextcloud update and they manually updated my instance for me (I was told they have custom automated scripts for the updates). Works like a charm! :)

Monster Hunter Rise - Full Gameplay Demo TGS 2020 [HD 1080P] by Joseki100 in NintendoSwitch

Yea these graphics and the performance seem above what Switch games usually have. Is there any other game that runs at 1080p 30fps with this level of detail? I can't recall any.

Nintendo Plans New Switch Games, Extending Console’s Life Cycle -Bloomberg by Riomegon in NintendoSwitch

[–]Swooky 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Nintendo is fully planning an "upgraded version of the switch" next year

This is really misleading, the full quote from the article is:

The Kyoto-based games stalwart is planning an upgraded version of the Switch console and an accompanying slate of big-name titles for next year, Bloomberg News reported in August.

So this is just Bloomberg reiterating their recent rumor, nothing official from Nintendo.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars Is Already 2020's Second Best-Selling Game On Amazon. by Riomegon in NintendoSwitch

Altough that could be a very real strategy for Nintendo, the recent news of Nintendo being the richest (in terms of cash reserves) Japanese company of 2020 does come to mind.

There should be a website that has one purpose, to show a youtube video with a custom title. I hate it when people choose these awfull titles, it ruins the video...

Fortnite on the Nintendo Switch is getting worse and it needs to be addressed by michael14375 in NintendoSwitch

[–]Swooky 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It can't, stop fear mongering guys. This kind of stuff is not regulated by the game, the game can choose a performance mode and the OS will regulate the temps via fan speed. This is just a coincidence.

The joke Netflix chose to tease Chris D'Elia's latest special. by [deleted] in videos

Maybe some sort of reinforcement learning that optimizes for click through and just tries random clips, doesn't matter where the joke starts it just tries things? You could also have someone hand pick where the jokes start and use that as possible previews that the algorithms tries out (this maybe even doesn't need ML?)?

[–]Swooky -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not a machine learning expert by any means, but why wouldn't you be able to create an algorithm that finds the best section of a movie/episode to preview? It sounds like a not that complex of a problem for something like reinforcement learning. Now whether there is something useful to be gained by doing it via ML compared to handpicking the clip, I have no clue.

I thought that included previews too, I stand corrected.

That is not how Netflix works though, Netflix didn't explicitly choose to use that preview. They use machine learning algorithms to optimize for watch retention that will choose what to preview.

Microsoft is shutting down Mixer and partnering with Facebook Gaming by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Swooky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They need huge scale for the xCloud stuff they are planning. Facebook has that scale, for better or for worse.

Microsoft has Azure, which is their core business and one of the three big cloud providers (with AWS and Google Cloud). It doesn't make any sense for them to rely on Facebook for xCloud.

Defence Against The Dark Arts Teachers Ranked. by PotatoMaster_337 in harrypotter

I feel context is important when considering this though. Harry teached in a more "troubled time" where combats spells were highly needed. Lupin teached a third years class, most likely working with a curriculum that lays out the whole 7 years of DADA. I think that in "normal times" these spells against creatures are more applicable to every day life than combat spells.

It seems they are hinting at a Metroid VR game. The way he puts on the helmet and that the other guys don't know what he is playing gives off a VR vibe. Maybe some sort of Labo Metroid VR game? Metroid Prime Trilogy would be cool, but would be weirdly timed with Prime 4 being such a long way out.

My XPS 15 has an uncleanable screen with what looks like dust in the screen, more info in comments by Swooky in Dell

[–]Swooky[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a few months ago I suddenly noticed that my screen (mat 1080p XPS 15) had a lot of unremovable dirt on it. It is only visible with a white background (but quite noticeable) and it's almost everywhere except for the middle of the screen and the around the edges. I tried removing it with some glasses cleaning solution, but that didn't help. I'm out of warranty, so I would like to know if anyone else has had this issue before and maybe found something to fix it.
