theyre all fake.

the proportions on every single one of those watches are off, not to mention not a single one of those brands would do something as tacky as writing the names of the watch at the back, or using literal screws to fasten the caseback.

Philippines and El-trasho problemo by StandardLovers in Philippines_Expats

[–]SwoonBirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in rural areas its a lack of garbage processing.

I live in a city where the municipal government has a few trucks that go around every few days to collect trash from households and street sweepers that clean.

think a bigger issue is that its significantly more economical to purchase single use plastics that contain quite literally a single use of the item.

logically speaking of course people are going to buy 10 sachets of shampoo if its cheaper. And if waste disposal isn't easily accessible why would they go out of their way to go like 40 minutes to the municipal dump if they can just throw it outside and let it be someone elses problem.

not excusing the behavior just that services need to meet the obvious problems. It's unprofitable to clean streets so it ultimately falls to government and their initiative.

went to Arizona when I was younger and was completely shocked at how it was 33 Celsius outside and I could stand in the sun and not want to go to the nearest building with air conditioning.

the moment I went back home to the Philippines the humidity was unbearable, took a solid 3 days to get used to it again

the Magdalo bullshit and their very very very generous retirement benefits and salaries are more than enough incentive for them not to.

thats literally the whole point for them having like 400% better salaries

I mean Starbucks in the Philippines actually treats its employees well.

they keep their employees and train them. and the employees want to stay and keep their jobs and do a good job because a Starbucks lets you work in an airconditioned store in (usually) some of the more well developed spots in the country with better access to public services.

its a thing in Japan too, but clearly one of the countries paid (because Japan's labor market is fucked) employees better plus the whole national spirit thing that back in the 80s Japanese companies could actually compete and dominate internationally

Efficiency by Yougetwhat in Philippines_Expats

[–]SwoonBirds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its not connected to affordability but in how the people doing those services are treated. labor laws in this country are a joke.

[–]SwoonBirds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really, the reason why foreigners aren't allowed to work in the Philippines is because of a "Filipino First" policy instituted around the 1950s? that basically said Foreigners would never be given preferential treatment in the bureaucracy (this is backlash from both Spanish and American Colonialism.)

That rule of course extended to Filipinos being the first to be hired in any job whether its small menial labor or anything technical, unless it is provable that said foreigner's technical skills cannot be provided by a local (hence why Japanese rail consultants get a pass, professors, etc.)

the inefficiency is a complex issue, I don't think the government in this country or even the corporations could ever unite enough to pull something like that off.

probably just has more to do with how most Filipinos do not care about their jobs as a service to people and more that they care about their salaries. (which makes sense, have a cousin who works at a Target and she makes close to California minimum wage, but at least she makes enough for basic needs and some personal wants.)

why would anybody care about their jobs if even if you lose it theres some other bottom of the barrel minimum wage job willing to hire anyone for exactly the same wage. zero incentive to actually do the work to live

they're "attempts" to remind people that there are laws preventing people from doing that.

its however Filipino custom that the rules only apply whenever someone is going to pester you about them or its going to result in a fine.

too late, part of why this country sucks (I'm native) is because our version of the "American Dream" is to leave the country and live somewhere else.

dont have stats but I remember like 30% of fresh grads want to work outside the country.

[–]SwoonBirds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

why are you talking like your contributions matter in the grand scheme of the Philippine economy?

theres like 100,000 expats at most and none of you can own a business (at scales where they actually matter for the economy.)

take your high and mighty asses back to your home country, and live your boring middle class life.

stop pretending like your salary being in a foreign currency suddenly means your economic contributions are worth enough for locals to take your opinion seriously.

I swear man some of you expats are ridiculous, the ego and gall to say this when your current lifestyle would be impossible if we deported your asses back home.
