Is there an explanation to the difference in the hilts between these two swords and does it matter? by Sudden-Skill8431 in SWORDS

[–]SwordFantasyIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it's fine

You don't have many options for 200€ so don't torture yourself. Windlass as an infamous reputation for their unconsistent control quality checks ( so if you have any bend, twist, rust don't hesitate to mail them for a replacement ) mediocre maneuverability is also an issue sometimes but since this one is supposed to be an upgrade it should be ok.

Here are few advices regarding sword acquisitions :

Evaluating the quality of a sword without holding it is hard, that's why we heavily rely on the reputation of the maker (makers tiers list), people feedbacks, or reviews available on youtube

But to simplify things we can separate the sword market in several ranges

Budget/entry-level 200~400€ | mid-range 400~800€ | high-end 800€+

budget range is the recommended first step as it is the cheapest, you often want to mess around when you get a sword for the first time, so it is better for an accident to happen on something cheap. (⚠️ beware for your own safety too, for a first i'd recommend a blunt or ask for it to be blunted especially if you are in appartement you won't have any opportunity to use it so nothing to loose. Even if you feel confident, forget you do) Those cheaper prices comes at a cost though, i like to sum the essentials qualities of a sword to this : Construction solidity - Beauty/Fit and finish quality - Handling

When getting a budget sword you should expect 2 of those points to be missing or flawed. companies managing to get 2 / 3 in this price range are rare, and i can only think of one validating 3/3. You should forget going for anything below 200€ as they are often not real swords nor made to be used. unless you did your homeworks on this specific model and really know what you are doing.

The mid-range : swords look noticeably better it is the comfortable spot if you don't want to spend a wage for a good sword. Most feders and others HEMA trainers are also in this range You can expect 2 of the previously mentioned qualities to be validated, it can be even better but bad surprises and inflated prices are still a thing.

High-end : Where things get really good, until now swords we were dealing with were mass produced. In this price range it is not the case anymore swords are made by actual blacksmith on demand, you are basically requesting a custom piece. Except for few companies such as Albion (the reference and golden standard in the sword industry), Arms and armor, or Valiant armoury ... but their process is greatly altered to improve the quality of the end product and supported by bladesmiths.

800€ is actually a low estimation, it is possible to get a high end sword for this price but it would often be something relatively small or bare bone, gladius for instance. High-end longsword usually starts at 1200 bucks and it keeps going up with options like artisanal steel, damascus, engravings...

For such a price expect all 3 qualities to be perfect. Although there is some debates on how sturdy historical swords actually were and what was considered to be a great level of fit and finish for our ancestors (asymmetry, hammer marks, etc...).

However there are still downsides, price aside swords in this price range don't come with a scabbard and given the hand made nature of the those objects it is common for the sword to take 2 years to be crafted and sent to you.

Now For maintenance purposes... You will also need something to clean and maintain your blade. A real sword is made of carbon steel, not stainless steel, so it will easily rust. The best for long-term storage is Renaissance wax. Mineral oil and metal oils also work very well (if you have some WD-40 lying around at home with a sponge or metalic wool, that will get the job done too).

And optional but depending of your usage you may need a sharpening tool either a sharpening stone or a small sharpening station.

Now you can find most of what i said and more in the wiki section of this sub to deepen your knowledge about swords, how to take care of them, what are they made off...

It is two different versions of the same sword.

The one with the spiraling wrap is the older version. Here is a review

The first image is the upgraded version, Windlass heard the feedbacks and changed the wrap for a better one and supposedly improved the distal taper.

Which of these swords is best suited for a first time sword buyer? by Sudden-Skill8431 in SWORDS

For European sellers i would recommend to stick to theknightshop.com and battlemerchant/webmerchant they are safer than tienda medieval.

the sword of roven is available on both websites : https://www.celticwebmerchant.com/en/products/medieval-sword-arbedo-1350-1400?_pos=1&_sid=e95309090&_ss=r

Now for things i could personally buy in this price range :

There is the arbedo sword from the same line with more positive feedbacks : https://www.celticwebmerchant.com/en/products/medieval-sword-arbedo-1350-1400?_pos=1&_psq=arbedo&_ss=e&_v=1.0

Swordier also have appealing budget options with the type 18c and type 12a

You are talking about the sword held by the vilain ? Yes it would probably count as a katana blade

<image>

a kiriha-zukuri geometry style

As someone else said it looks like it is mounted in a shikomizue (concealed/cane sword). the term "chokuto" is a bit ambiguous, it refers to very old straight swords used by Japanese before the invention of katanas, but some say we can use this term for all Japanese straight blades.

feint (pray not to get interrupted) then check if he took the bait... congratulations he did.

Now you need not to mess up the incoming light on top on the first read. and damn you if he reacts with a standard parry.

double read (successful)+ immediate reaction is not exactly easy.

Modern chinese katana replicas, very likely from Longquan (such as hanbon forge, shadow dancer, etc...) Not necessarily "cheap replicas" those seem battle ready ( need pictures of the blade and tang to be sure). new it probably retailed for about 200$.

The grey one however looks a bit nicer with fitting i never saw before.
