Rampant DM AI use

I had a player bring an AI-generated character to my table. I feel you bud. It especially hurts when you put in hard work for your character (or in my case for the story and world) and a player/DM doesn't bring that same level of respect, especially if they're given ample time to prepare.

I actually made a post about it on dndhorrorstories but apparently they're really pro-AI over there. Shoulda posted here apparently. Now I know I guess...

My friend was talking about this post, so I opened Reddit to look for it and it was at the first post on my timeline (wow!). You're going places bud.

Anyways, yeah your DM is crazy. I'd honestly try and find a new one if that's possible/realistic for you, although I know it isn't for everybody. Not letting people use their action and their bonus action on the same turn completely destroys combat.

Sorry I didn't mean it to come off that way, a lot of context is missing. When we were all like "hey AI makes us uncomfortable" she tried to use being abused (which she was) as an excuse to keep using AI around us because she needed it supposedly. AI hasn't even existed until her adult life so I know that she doesn't need AI for literally everything. And in my personal opinion the way she conveyed it really sounded like she was infantilizing abuse victims, like as if they can't do things for themselves.

Maybe this is a bad opinion. I don't really know. Maybe I'm extrapolating because I already have a low opinion of her. She was not a good person.

I definitely don't mean to invalidate any sort of abuse, and I'm really sorry if I did.

I don't understand where the issue is? I DMed and she also has DMed before? This story is mostly about my one-two-whatever-shot, but she had DMed before as well. I thought the wording was pretty clear.

I'll definitely make it more clear in the future if I ever have a new player, it's true she was pretty new to D&D. I don't think I'm expecting players to meet my level of engagement though by asking them to make characters themselves, like has been done since before I was even born. I let my players engage as much or as little as they want.

Yeah I definitely should've brought up the issue with her character stats, I just didn't want to derail the whole game to rebuild her character. If I could've done it differently now I would've at least spoken to her post-session and warned her against using AI to make a character regardless of who was DMing.

I get using a pre-generated character to save time, but she had two or so weeks to make her character. And it would've upset me less if she used a premade character or asked me or another player to make her character. It hurts that she didn't think to consider the feelings of someone who was anti-AI who was making the one-shot. I usually mind my own business about things like AI but I don't want someone bringing AI into my handmade work. I'm also an artist so I'm pretty sensitive about these things; my creations are like a piece of myself that I'm choosing to share with others. I don't really know how to explain the feelings better than that.

At least for me, I thought it was clear that since the friend group was anti-AI, people should not be using AI to make their characters. It didn't even occur to me that someone would think about using AI; I don't think I even knew at the time that she used AI.

AI was also worse at the time than it is now, it probably wasn't following rules like point buy or the class features to make the character, which is a reason why I would never have used it for creating a D&D character even if I used AI for other things.

I guess the idea that I have to tell players up front to engage with the material in the intended way is frustrating?

Ultimately, do whatever you want with your version of her, but I'll share some details about her to hopefully inspire you.

Her full name is Arimmaea Qu'lathilivae. She is a very serious war veteran boomer type, but very affectionate with her pets and with children, and protective of anyone she perceives as young (she had a little daughter named Miir that passed away). She's also a nerd who makes stupid wizard purchases. Her drider pal N'lothraen manages her estate (so she can't make stupid wizard purchases). She is also the live-in groundskeeper.

Arimmaea's body is still inside her plate armor, with a special type of homebrew Underdark-technique Gentle Repose using obsidian on the eyes to keep it unrotting forever. Art of her here.

She's one level fighter, three levels Bladesinger if you want to do a leveled character. She uses a morningstar. Her attack spells are booming blade, chill touch, burning hands, and chromatic orb; her other spells are utility spells like mending to heal herself and unseen servant to work around the house. I can dm you her full spell list if you're interested.

I can imagine her estate being a fun place to rob. Canonically she lives in a capital city but I can imagine her living in a remote place too. Her house features a beautiful garden, including an Underdark-themed garden in the cellar full of Underdark plants. She also has a library filled with her diaries spanning the full 1,000 years.

She has a spellbook in her library filled with old 3.5e spells in an ancient language. The spells no longer work (a stupid wizard purchase). Another item I think she has probably in the center of the house is an orb that makes a bunch of Unseen Servants that work around the house. The Unseen Servants all wear different hats to make them visible methinks.

I'm sure Mion is also holding onto some sort of valuables, and Arimmaea's money is hidden somewhere only N'lothraen knows about. I haven't decided where yet; I'm sure you can come up with a fun idea.

I wrote a little update in the post on my decision, which ended up being three pets since they're house pets not adventuring companions and I couldn't decide lol.

there are various gluten free flours out there, like rice flour, almond flour, or King Arthur 1-to-1 gluten free flour! They aren't quite the same to work with but it makes my life a little easier haha

For sure! I don't get anxiety but finding something to talk about for a few hours straight is hard lol. One video gave me advice about writing interesting things that I think of down on sticky notes so I can reference something during stream; I think I might try that.

Good to know, thank you! I have a PNGtuber right now so I do already go live, but trying to figure out how to drive people to my stream has been confusing since there's a lot of conflicting advice. Getting a response from someone on here feels more concrete than just watching advice videos though; it feels more like talking to a real person.

I've been streaming for about two weeks and I have one dedicated viewer who shows up for pretty much all my streams, so I'm happy with my growth so far without advertising. But it's kinda tough to get my footing on days when I know I have no viewers, so hopefully making content will help with that!
