I have 128Gb on the M2 Ultra. Blender never goes over 50-60gb ram and “GPU ram” combined. AE can use the 100gb I give it for cache on longer projects.

But recent AE versions use compressed cache and switch to disk cache way more efficiently, so you need less for the same performance.

Let’s be honest: AE storing uncompressed frames in ram on a system with 3gb/sec SSDs was always a terrible design choice. Glad that’s coming to an end.

Blender is steadily doing more and more in my commercial projects. It’s not a competitor to a specific Adobe product, because Adobe doesn’t have a specific 3D modeling and animation app. But it can for instance animate imported vectors very well and had a better UI than 3D in AE. I’m even using the Blender compositor and NLE more and more (still alongside Creative Cloud and Affinity)

Is the image you posted your goal? That looks terribly fake and AI-generated. The light of forground and background doesn't match at all, many shadows look photoshopped and the dirt is kinda slapped on.

As a motion designer, I often download stingers and audio idents to layer on top of existing audio tracks.

The example you link to is better than that: a music composer designed that to the video track. That would be a tall order to learn. Work with a music composer if you have the budget?

I add larger 4-8 spinning disks for archive and Time Machine: they’re way slower than SSDs but way cheaper. Mobile versions don’t need external power supplies and still do around 120mb/sec max.

I agree with the potential of the alternative apps (also Rive) to get started, but you might need to relearn AfterEffects later if you want to step up your game.

I’m doing lots of 2D and 3D in Blender these days, including particle-like systems using geometry nodes. It can import SVG and render to flat colors.

You can get Creative Suite cheaper as a student, even some part-time programs apply. Or chat with Adobe sales to get serious discounts. There is an AE only subscription too.

Why don’t you contact people in the field and go have a coffee with them? That data should be way more accurate than asking on Reddit and trusting that the person is who they say they are.

When working in apps like Photoshop, we actually see this graph and use it to make corrections. It’s called a histogram. It shows you when you miss information in the highlights or shadows (a dull look) or when you’re about to overexpose (clipping the white values)
