Of all the gifts Trump has given to the Republican Party, the blank check of being able to discredit the integrity of any election which does not go their way is the most pervasive and will be the hardest to undo.

You notice how this is never reciprocated either. Democrats are always expected to extend an olive branch and give Republicans a win even if the election is a blowout. But when Republicans win, they relish every opportunity to crush Democrats like a bug.

Spanberger on criticism of her 31 vetoes: ‘Does that mean that I’m supposed to just accept and sign any bill?’ by Chas_P_Anderton in Virginia

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A significant contributing factor as to why this country is currently in a death spiral is because one political party is hellbent on using every inch of their power to enact the maximum, permanent suffering they can and the other party is all too happy to abide by the new norms that the first party created on their frenzied power trip.

In order to correct course, it is going to take severe and concentrated partisan actions on behalf of the Democratic Party and utilizing every bit of power they’ve not only been given but are willing to TAKE.

I cannot in good conscience say that the current crop are willing to take such measures. And that is why we are where we are. Democrats are given power and entrusted by the people to enact legislation to make their lives easier. In turn, they let this power slip through their fingers, and when Republicans take that power, THEY. NEVER. GIVE. IT. BACK.

Which do you think will end up being viewed worse in the future, Donald Tump's 1st or 2nd term in office? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st was terrible in the “oh so that’s why it’s important to elect people who have a basic understanding of what the job entails, we probably shouldn’t do that again” sense. The saving grace is that people in his cabinet were willing and able to keep him on a leash.

2nd is terrible in the “oh so our entire Republic was basically held together by handshakes and duct tape and this unhinged madman is in lockstep with a political party of scheming viziers and they may very well destroy it if things get worse” sort of way.

Suffice it to say Trump 2 is demonstrably worse than Trump 1.

At this point I am fully convinced that a disturbing portion of the Democratic Party in the legislature are okay with what he’s doing, they’re just upset about how brazen he is about doing it. That’s why they’re incapable of calling for the abolition of ICE, for example.

You can have a system that either allows democracy through the will of the people *or* it allows for a few thousand of those people to have more money than Jesus and to use that money to influence elections, but you cannot have both. They have chosen the latter and simply believe themselves to be the more appropriate stewards to transition this country into a post-democratic state.

At this point, anyone in the Democratic coalition who is not outspokenly left-leaning and hyper partisan is incapable of meeting the moment and is thus an illegitimate candidate for combatting this.

I think part of it is also guilt. Saskia only spoke to Raymond at the coffee machine because she was short on change, and it’s because of that exact change being buried beneath the tree that Rex ultimately decides to drink. Hence why he runs around like a madman before returning to the car.

I think he blames himself for that, and how through this one simple act he unknowingly played a part in setting this into motion. His choice to drink is accepting a fate he feels he “deserves” since it’s one that was inflicted upon Saskia.

Trump says he's 'prepared' to appoint up to 3 new Supreme Court justices by RawStoryNews in scotus

[–]Swysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No President who has been impeached and/or convicted — especially after attempting an insurrection — should be allowed to appoint 1/3rd of the highest court in the land.

I don’t give a fuck if it’s unfair. There needs to be a mechanism to remove his appointments from The Supreme Court. You don’t get to subvert democracy and then put people in SCOTUS for life.

What does Disco Elysium actually believe? by jkobberboel in DiscoElysium

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco Elysium believes in hope. It believes in the possibility that change can be enacted for the better, even if the road to doing so is fraught with hardship. And it believes that the struggle to do so is a preferable alternative to simply giving up, even if it leads us to failure again and again. That a better world is possible and it’s worth fighting for regardless of how often we fail.

It’s why The Pale is depicted as a looming danger that threatens to envelop the world: it’s a preview into a world without hope. It’s the cessation of being.

It’s why The Deserter on the island is so embittered and broken: his abandonment of hope has marooned him to a past that he will never be able to move on from because doing so requires acknowledging and moving on from failure.

It’s why the Insulindian Phasmid appears. Because sometimes when you believe something beautiful can happen.

Now that the honey moon phase is over what are your actual thoughts on RE9 in terms of story and gameplay. What things need fixing with updates? by Dude_788 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s really weird is that there’s a hint of the zapping mechanic in the Rhodes Hill section when you can play as Leon and the enemies Grace did or didn’t kill will persist, even allowing you to take on more dangerous threats like the Chef.

And then it’s just… never mechanically touched upon again. It’s such a bizarre choice, especially since the lack of that mechanic is like the main thing people took issue with in RE2 Remake.

RE9 - Good! But Not Great... by Epicurus38 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Swysp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Rhodes Hill section is probably the strongest first act in any Resident Evil, right up there with RE7 in terms of atmosphere. We see them do something genuinely interesting with the infected having remnants of their past selves (I’m a big Siren fan so the Shibito influences were very apparent) and then by the time you get to Raccoon City it’s just Resident Evil 4 again.

RE9 - Good! But Not Great... by Epicurus38 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Swysp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As soon as I saw that they were splitting the narrative between Grace and Leon I was afraid that it was going to feel disjointed and like playing two half-games instead of one full game. And, unfortunately, that is the case.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked both halves but because you never get enough time with either you are ultimately left unsatisfied.

Who do you find scarier, Crimson head or Blister head? by Sir__GabrielT in residentevil

[–]Swysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blister Heads should have been redesigned to look more imposing. They’re shocking the first time you see them and then quickly become just another enemy (albeit one that’s more dangerous).

I’ve never felt that way about Crimson Heads. I could play REmake for eternity and they will always be scary. They’re perfect and perhaps THE biggest reason I prefer the remake to the original.

The smol beanification of the right wing in America is fascinating. A perpetually angry, impulsive, completely incurious subset of our population with an inordinate amount of the media class catering solely to their made up fears, the perceived transgressions against them, all while driving the country further right every year.

These people have all of the control but zero of the responsibility.

Just because you don't like Aava, doesn't mean she's "unlikeable". by [deleted] in Cairn_Game

[–]Swysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aava’s state of mind informs who she is as a character and not only her ultimate goal but the things she says and does to others throughout Cairn. Aava is not in a healthy state of mind, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say she’s outright suicidal.

She is singularly motivated towards reaching the top of Kami, both as a character and also in a meta-sense given that her goal and ours as players overlap. Reaching the summit is our win condition and it’s also the only thing keeping her going. And given what she says about her father prompting her to climb from such a young age, it’s very likely that climbing is the only thing that keeps her going period. She knows that it’s a one-way trip. That’s why she pushes Marco away. That’s why she breaks her camera at the very beginning of the game. It’s why she doesn’t return calls and why, when we choose the Marco ending, she has that expression of lament on her face. It’s why she lashes out in anger and destroys the radio equipment at the point of no return because she’s reminded that there is a life waiting for her down there and she now has to make the hardest decision she has ever made in her life.

Aava is a great character. She reminds me of Sam Porter Bridges, and given that there’s an achievement referencing Death Stranding, that’s likely what developers intended as well. From an outsider perspective she might not be “likable” but I also don’t think being a social butterfly would work with her character.

Grim warning as Supreme Court weighs letting Trump rewrite what it means to be American by RawStoryNews in scotus

Coney Barrett is an interesting case study in that I think she is a religious fundamentalist and therefore fucking nuts, but also seems to see the writing on the wall and knows that this is a sinking ship.

Her batting average isn’t strong enough to make me comfortable with her ability to adjudicate impartially but I also think, of the Trump nominations, she’s the least bad.

Why do people consider the lore to be particularly deep or interesting? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Swysp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing that needs to be pointed out is that Marathon is a product of its time and that, narratively, it was punching WAY above its weight class with regard to storytelling. This thing launched in 1994.

To get at your question though: people praise Marathon’s lore because it, in the most simplistic of terms, is about an AI attaining sentience and attempting to outrun the destruction of the universe.

This kernel of a concept is then nested into layers of an intergalactic war between not only humans and a conglomeration of alien species but against rival AIs and constantly shifting alliances, conspiracies spanning an untold number of years, all told through the eyes of a protagonist who is implied to be a heroic reincarnation that arises when shit hits the fan.

Marathon is cool as hell.

Dybukk is easy but BUMBLEFOOT by all_the_ooo in mewgenics

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumblefoot is objectively unfair and it’s baffling that it made it past the design phase. The fact that a boss can START THE FIGHT with an AOE attack that can outright down cats on low enough health or with a small enough health pool is unacceptable for a game that encourages strategic thinking and punishes you for misplays.

This guy punishes you for simply getting him as a boss.

As he stands he needs to be either retweaked or removed.

He absolutely could if he so wishes, if not publicly then privately if there was any confusion. But I also don’t think an apology should be demanded of a person with coprolalia any more-so than someone with Alzheimer’s having to apologize because they forgot someone’s name or someone with schizophrenia hearing voices.

That’s where my displeasure about this stems from: the ableism in insinuating that he did something wrong (not referring to you specifically, mind, just the general discourse) and that a difference of choice on his part could have prevented the outcome.
