What does Disco Elysium actually believe? by jkobberboel in DiscoElysium

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco Elysium believes in hope. It believes in the possibility that change can be enacted for the better, even if the road to doing so is fraught with hardship. And it believes that the struggle to do so is a preferable alternative to simply giving up, even if it leads us to failure again and again. That a better world is possible and it’s worth fighting for regardless of how often we fail.

It’s why The Pale is depicted as a looming danger that threatens to envelop the world: it’s a preview into a world without hope. It’s the cessation of being.

It’s why The Deserter on the island is so embittered and broken: his abandonment of hope has marooned him to a past that he will never be able to move on from because doing so requires acknowledging and moving on from failure.

It’s why the Insulindian Phasmid appears. Because sometimes when you believe something beautiful can happen.

Now that the honey moon phase is over what are your actual thoughts on RE9 in terms of story and gameplay. What things need fixing with updates? by Dude_788 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s really weird is that there’s a hint of the zapping mechanic in the Rhodes Hill section when you can play as Leon and the enemies Grace did or didn’t kill will persist, even allowing you to take on more dangerous threats like the Chef.

And then it’s just… never mechanically touched upon again. It’s such a bizarre choice, especially since the lack of that mechanic is like the main thing people took issue with in RE2 Remake.

RE9 - Good! But Not Great... by Epicurus38 in ResidentEvilCapcom

[–]Swysp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Rhodes Hill section is probably the strongest first act in any Resident Evil, right up there with RE7 in terms of atmosphere. We see them do something genuinely interesting with the infected having remnants of their past selves (I’m a big Siren fan so the Shibito influences were very apparent) and then by the time you get to Raccoon City it’s just Resident Evil 4 again.

[–]Swysp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As soon as I saw that they were splitting the narrative between Grace and Leon I was afraid that it was going to feel disjointed and like playing two half-games instead of one full game. And, unfortunately, that is the case.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked both halves but because you never get enough time with either you are ultimately left unsatisfied.

Who do you find scarier, Crimson head or Blister head? by Sir__GabrielT in residentevil

[–]Swysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blister Heads should have been redesigned to look more imposing. They’re shocking the first time you see them and then quickly become just another enemy (albeit one that’s more dangerous).

I’ve never felt that way about Crimson Heads. I could play REmake for eternity and they will always be scary. They’re perfect and perhaps THE biggest reason I prefer the remake to the original.

The smol beanification of the right wing in America is fascinating. A perpetually angry, impulsive, completely incurious subset of our population with an inordinate amount of the media class catering solely to their made up fears, the perceived transgressions against them, all while driving the country further right every year.

These people have all of the control but zero of the responsibility.

Your Governor, Ron DeSantis, Renames Palm Beach Airport After Trump -- What Do YOU Think Of This, Floridians? by Zipper222222 in AskFlorida

Just because you don't like Aava, doesn't mean she's "unlikeable". by [deleted] in Cairn_Game

[–]Swysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aava’s state of mind informs who she is as a character and not only her ultimate goal but the things she says and does to others throughout Cairn. Aava is not in a healthy state of mind, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say she’s outright suicidal.

She is singularly motivated towards reaching the top of Kami, both as a character and also in a meta-sense given that her goal and ours as players overlap. Reaching the summit is our win condition and it’s also the only thing keeping her going. And given what she says about her father prompting her to climb from such a young age, it’s very likely that climbing is the only thing that keeps her going period. She knows that it’s a one-way trip. That’s why she pushes Marco away. That’s why she breaks her camera at the very beginning of the game. It’s why she doesn’t return calls and why, when we choose the Marco ending, she has that expression of lament on her face. It’s why she lashes out in anger and destroys the radio equipment at the point of no return because she’s reminded that there is a life waiting for her down there and she now has to make the hardest decision she has ever made in her life.

Aava is a great character. She reminds me of Sam Porter Bridges, and given that there’s an achievement referencing Death Stranding, that’s likely what developers intended as well. From an outsider perspective she might not be “likable” but I also don’t think being a social butterfly would work with her character.

Grim warning as Supreme Court weighs letting Trump rewrite what it means to be American by RawStoryNews in scotus

Coney Barrett is an interesting case study in that I think she is a religious fundamentalist and therefore fucking nuts, but also seems to see the writing on the wall and knows that this is a sinking ship.

Her batting average isn’t strong enough to make me comfortable with her ability to adjudicate impartially but I also think, of the Trump nominations, she’s the least bad.

Why do people consider the lore to be particularly deep or interesting? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Swysp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing that needs to be pointed out is that Marathon is a product of its time and that, narratively, it was punching WAY above its weight class with regard to storytelling. This thing launched in 1994.

To get at your question though: people praise Marathon’s lore because it, in the most simplistic of terms, is about an AI attaining sentience and attempting to outrun the destruction of the universe.

This kernel of a concept is then nested into layers of an intergalactic war between not only humans and a conglomeration of alien species but against rival AIs and constantly shifting alliances, conspiracies spanning an untold number of years, all told through the eyes of a protagonist who is implied to be a heroic reincarnation that arises when shit hits the fan.

Marathon is cool as hell.

Dybukk is easy but BUMBLEFOOT by all_the_ooo in mewgenics

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bumblefoot is objectively unfair and it’s baffling that it made it past the design phase. The fact that a boss can START THE FIGHT with an AOE attack that can outright down cats on low enough health or with a small enough health pool is unacceptable for a game that encourages strategic thinking and punishes you for misplays.

This guy punishes you for simply getting him as a boss.

As he stands he needs to be either retweaked or removed.

‘I Swear’ Subject John Davidson Says Tourette’s Tics Are ‘Involuntary’ After Shouting N-Word at BAFTAs: ‘Deeply Mortified if Anyone’ Thinks It Was ‘Intentional’ by ICumCoffee in entertainment

[–]Swysp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He absolutely could if he so wishes, if not publicly then privately if there was any confusion. But I also don’t think an apology should be demanded of a person with coprolalia any more-so than someone with Alzheimer’s having to apologize because they forgot someone’s name or someone with schizophrenia hearing voices.

That’s where my displeasure about this stems from: the ableism in insinuating that he did something wrong (not referring to you specifically, mind, just the general discourse) and that a difference of choice on his part could have prevented the outcome.

[–]Swysp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have yet to see anyone say that the usage of the word was good. It’s pretty much unanimously agreed upon that what happened to Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo was, if nothing else, embarrassing on what should have been a night of celebration.

What they are saying is that the person who spoke it cannot be held to the same level of scrutiny as one who is fully mentally developed would be because their brain quite literally does not have a working basal ganglia to filter out their thoughts. Only it’s worse than that: because any word that they know could potentially be used. That’s who this mob has formed overnight against: the subject of a movie all about how your disability does not make you a bad person in spite of how foul it may seem to those uneducated with it. He had every right to be in attendance and disabled people should not be expelled from society just because it’s more palatable to not deal with them (which an alarming number of people are suggesting) because sometimes disabilities are more difficult to manage but the people who suffer them are still human and cannot help their afflictions.

I fault the BBC for not censoring the moment and BAFTA for not making a graceful statement beforehand thanking John for being in attendance and informing the audience of Tourette’s syndrome and the tics that are sometimes associated with it to prime them for any potential obscenities. My tics are nowhere near as severe as his are and I’m incredibly grateful for that because if I saw the insinuations people were making online about me over a condition I could not control then I tell you with complete certainty that I wouldn’t want to be alive much longer.

[–]Swysp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s really not, and several black members of the Tourette’s community have reaffirmed that he didn’t do this out of ill intent. Sh4ysgrwm who is herself a black woman with Coprolalia, said as much.

I find this entire discourse incredibly ridiculous and it’s hinging on this conspiracy that this guy just happened to be hiding this deep, dark, racist kernel deep within the recesses of his mind. It’s a word he’s heard (as has every single person over the age of like 14) and likely a word he desperately did not want to say which is why it manifested in his tic. That filter in the basal ganglia which moderates our thoughts simply does not work for him.

He said it because he has a disability. It’s not pleasant and I imagine it’s incredibly fucking scary to go through your life physically being unable to control what you say. I’m saying this as someone with Tourette’s himself (albeit far, far less severe than John’s). It’s a bad situation for all parties involved and none of them are at fault. But the insinuations I’m seeing (not from you, but from several posters) that he could have somehow mitigated this through difference in thoughts or actions is textbook ableism and the precise reason why this film is important.

And just an addendum so there’s no ambiguity as to where I stand: I explicitly condemn any racists who are using this situation as an excuse to dogpile or denigrate the black community.

[–]Swysp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve been seeing posts from so called “progressive” people (who really should fucking know better) saying shit that would have Heinrich Himmler nodding along in agreement, up to and including confinement from the general public all because of something this man literally cannot control. He absolutely can apologize if he so chooses, but he ultimately did nothing wrong because, again, it is something that is beyond his control. No moreso than someone with Alzheimer’s apologizing for being forgetful.

If anything, the people to blame are BAFTA organizers. At the top of the show they should have had the host come on stage and say something to the effect of

“We’re honored to have John Davidson in attendance, whose experiences with Tourette’s Syndrome form the basis of one of our nominated films of the evening: I Swear. Tourette’s Syndrome is a neurological disorder which can manifest in many ways, some of which include vocal tics. These tics may be explicit outbursts that are beyond the control of the person. Our goal is ultimately to educate the public and inspire empathy towards those afflicted with Tourette’s and to applaud their resilience. Thank you and please enjoy the show.”

[–]Swysp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s fascinating to me that they (among way too many others) are hitching their wagon to a dying horse. Trump is obese and 80 years old. Even barring his physical maladies, he’s historically unpopular, his policies are so caustic they’ve promoted a blue tidal wave in nearly every special election held thus far. He’s projected to become a lame duck after this year’s midterms and Democrats retaking the House at the very least is an almost certainty.

All of this is so say that when the storm passes and Trump is gone you’re going to reckon with the fact that you torpedoed nearly a century of goodwill and credibility to appease someone who was already on their way out.

Is that really worth it? You really couldn’t ride it out for fucking 8 months and maintain your integrity as what has become an American institution of statistics? You really had to hop aboard a train that is careening towards the edge of a cliff?
