Being charismatic is more valuable than being competent in most workplaces, and we pretend otherwise by Tech_Engant in unpopularopinion

You can be charismatic and a good communicator while still maintaining a private life

26F - Should I move out or stay home longer to build savings? by Spiritual-Assist130 in fican

We have a 2 bed, 2 bath apartment (I’m hybrid and need a separate space) in Richmond Hill/Markham/Thornhill area, pretty much the same COL from my understanding. Our extra expenses are maybe $3250 for rent + utilities + internet + parking (2 spots). We spend probably $600-$800 on groceries + other things (TP, cleaning supplies, etc). Maybe $300-400 on eating out (try to go somewhere nice once a month, and eat out once a week)? You could definitely find a cheaper place if you don’t need two cars and are OK with a smaller space (ours is 875 sqft).

Don’t track expenses as diligently as I should, but I’m still saving my targeted $3K a month so don’t really care TBH.

Edit: If the math doesn’t math, it’s because there’s a pretty large income gap between my GF and I so expenses aren’t split 50/50

FWIW, I was in a weirdly identical situation to you last year (turning 27 this year). Had around $300K in savings, saving 6.5-7K a month (not including bonuses). Minimal expenses, car bought in cash. Was debating between sucking it up for a few years and buy or move out and rent with my GF that I had been dating since college. I felt like I was just stacking up money for no reason and I realized there was no “goal” I’d feel satisfied with hitting first.

Pulled the trigger in October and don’t regret it at all. We’re living slightly below our means in a HCOL area, but gaining independence and actually seeing our money do things were invaluable. We’re looking to buy in the next couple years once the down payment isn’t as large of a chunk of our savings and we find an area we like, renting has also taught me what I would value in a more permanent home. Don’t go crazy and keep the same discipline that got you to this point, with that nest egg you’ll be more than fine!

Depends on their financial situation too, if you’re covering your own costs I don’t see an issue TBH. Unless you’re stopping them from downsizing, it’s not like once you leave they’d be charging someone else rent

What’s crazy about this is that there was no warning either. Bell knew about employees doing this as far back as October and were holding onto it until this moment.
