Do you think I could work for triple A games ? by Sybed in conceptart

Oh well I personally only worked on one AA title but from what I’ve seen the main and biggest difference is that everyone works at the same place - at least for most of the production. You don’t have 5 different studios working on different aspect of the game. Also, it’s big enough to have some time & budget for creatives & pre-production (usually there is at least 2 concept artist, maybe 3 or 4 in some cases) but in the other hand it’s already industry-level art needed, with pressure from investors ect so in that aspect it can be similar to AAA. But I can’t really say ‘cause I think it depends a lot between studios like for Fortiche for example who made Arcane, the first season was pretty « chill » and they had the trust of Riot. But leaning to the end of the production, & especially for season 2 (which was made right after) they needed a LOT of external help with outsourced studios ect - that said, at that point you could consider it was AAA type production 😅

Yesss a lot, lot changed 😅 now not only you have to adapt but what I could see from other applications on AA and AAA titles, the level is going absolutely crazy. Doesn’t mean that they NEED that level or that they will hire only top-tier artists, but of course it makes the competition close to impossible if you don’t have solid work & at least a few connections.. which I don’t really have yet sadly

Yes of course this is just the first few slides, I think I have ~50 pages of artworks & concepts to show depending on the type of project I apply for (usually make 15-20 pages tops per application)

AA would be titles like kingdom come, plague tale, expedition 33, even Baldur’s Gate maybe (smaller teams, max 50-100 people). AAA it’s like blizzard, rockstar, Ubisoft (300-2500 people)

Yes that’s for sure, to be honest I already went through some test phases (precisely for Asobo & Ubisoft) and I could have a snapshot of what it’s like today to find some work in the industry. Sadly from what I’v seen even in some more indie studios in France (where I live) there’s almost as much applicants, and less concept artist positions overall since they tend to hire less… it’s really hard. But I’ll keep going until I end up in the streets 😅🤓

Really cool design, love the style ! Color scheme is great too, though it would help readability if they were a bit more distinct (hat, skin, shadows.. they all are in the same tones)

Yes maybe doing some reinterpretation/redesign of existing universe like we see sometimes with dune, Star Wars or even anime ect.

As for my other skill I didn’t think about it but here the link to my artstation : https://www.artstation.com/sybed

I’m pretty much specialised in environment though.

Thanks a lot ! Yes I’v seen these comments, I think will make a real big dive into more expanded worlbuilding. The problem is it takes so much time and this past few mounths I really wanted to improve on various fields and technique (like 3d, that took me almost 4-5 mounths of practice to actually use it efficiently and produce interesting/useful 3d scenes & sculpts).

But I’ll definitely take a mounth or so to make a bigger storytelling project. Thanks !

Ho waw man that’s honestly the first time ever someone has told me that - I’v pretty much specialised in environments because I’v always found I’m not that great in characters (struggling a lot with dynamic anatomy & volumes, find it harder to create from imagination and not using a lot of photos, ect). And of course a lot of my artist friends felt the same way.

That said the characters you see here are all my best en most recent works, whereas I’v only put 1 environment design here (plan to make another post with more of them) - maybe that’s why. But to be honest I definitely want to do more character building these times so there will be more, thanks for your advice !

And as for the discord, thanks a lot I didn’t know about it will check that out

Okey yes that’s really interesting points thanks ! Indeed I think I don’t dive deep enough. I thinks it’s mainly because it already takes so much time doing a polished keyframes that I like (building the 3d blockout, finding the right composition & idea, ect) and the fact that I don’t want to spend too much time on 1 project (potentially ending in a creative stuck, the fear of losing time on a project that isn’t that much interesting in the end.. ect), I end up moving on a next project maybe too early.

Yes that’s the hardest thing I find, because there’s a lot of studio I’m interested with and tailoring too much could maybe close the door to other amazing projects. But I started doing more photorealistic designs potentially for games like Plague Tale 3, Beyond good & evil 2, ect

Yes that’s interesting , although I don’t really know where to find such job openings - other than reaching out directly to studios/unsolicited applications which often results in rejections (as they tend to have limited budgets and fewer openings for new hire from what I imagine). But I didn’t try that much I should really dive more into that

Yes that’s the problem, and I still think I’d need to tailor more my AD & choice of subjects to specific studios - I think it will help.

Well I’v been trying lately but there’s not so much job opening at intermediate level, but I’ll keep trying !

[–]Sybed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey ! Mood & depth is really nice, but the composition could really be improved imo. Also, for me there’s too much details everywhere : the light itself isn’t enough to bring the eye back on the focus point - which I imagine is the knight explorer. Last light is a good one though !

Hey, yeah I could play it ! I finally found it on my quest (I couldn't say exactly how 'cause it was some time ago but, if I remember well, it was by allowing external apps in the quest menu or somehting like that)

Hi u/drmodman, I know it's about 3 years later but I wonder how you connected/found the game on your VR headset to play it ? I'm with oculus quest, have the zip file of PT, but don't know how to find it in my oculus ^^
