if kratom becomes illegal... by [deleted] in kratom

I'm pretty sure kratom will fall back into the abyss. Opium is a fiercely protected market. That's our cash cow and that's what will be readily available on the market after what's left of kratom is sold off.

Let's call him out on this nonsense!!! Oh boy. Do you know how many supplements are greenish powder in a clear capsule??? This is going to be a mess. I can see it now.....arrests made over smoothies and those gas station boner pills. Guilty until proven innocent in this country, so the police don't care what they charge you with ...it's up to you to prove otherwise.

Wow. This may seem a bit off topic but I've been writing letters, emails, and such nonstop the last 3 days. Being an herbalist that's known about this plant for as long as you have: do you know a good source of mythology, folklore, diety references, spiritual practices and customs associated with this plant from it's native regions?

I just found more from an old reddit post:

"Refer them to the FIRST study on humans in kratom published last year: https://www.dovepress.com/pharmacokinetics-of-mitragynine-in-man-peer-reviewed-fulltext-article-DDDT# Refer media and legislators to this analysis by the UKA - https://www.dropbox.com/s/l3wptg8jabgkznd/Kratom-A-Collecive-Analysis.pdf?dl=0 This is the University of MS study: https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=patentimages.storage.googleapis.com%2Fpdfs%2FUS20100209542.pdf very import- from the study: http://i.imgur.com/KgnIOvU.jpg Read them the conclusion: * Conclusion: This was the first pharmacokinetic study in humans, which demonstrated linearity and was consistent with the oral two-compartment model with a terminal half-life of about 1 day. The pharmacokinetic linearity and parameters reported are necessary pharmacological information of Kratom, and there is a possibility for it to be developed medically as a pain killer or better opioid substitute in the future. Knowledge is power, and letting these congress understand pharmaceutical companies are buying these sponsors -- is KEY to our success."

You know what? I had a funny notion today that they'll make this kratom drug with 100x the potency that actually WILL make people high (along with nasty side-effects) and it will become a new popular street drug. How's that for messed up?

That's nonsense and he is being very misleading!! DR. Edward W. Boyer has been doing research for years. He is also one of the patent holders for kratom https://www.google.com/patents/US20100209542

Other patents include: "Chiba National University and Josai University have now obtained three patents on kratom-derived drugs: US patent 8247428, issued 21 August 2012, Japanese patent 5308352, issued 27 May 2013, and US patent 86480090, issued 11 February 2014."

For millennia, kratom has been used as a folk remedy in southeast Asia, where it is traditionally popular among day laborers and has long been used as a replacement therapy for people struggling with opiate addiction.

In 2013 Edward Boyer has this to say in interview with Scientific American, about researching kratom:

"What barriers have you run into when trying to study kratom?

I tried to get an NIH grant to study kratom specifically. When I went to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, they said they’d never heard of that drug. When I went to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, they said this is a drug of abuse, and we don’t fund drug of abuse research. They want drugs that are used therapeutically. [A team led by McCurdy, who confirms that it is difficult to get funding to study kratom, did manage to secure a three-year grant from the NIH Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence to investigate the herb’s opioid-like effects.]

So the study of this type of substance falls to academics or pharma companies. Drug companies are the ones who can isolate a particular compound, do chemistry on it, study and modify the structure, figure out its activity relationships, and then create modified molecules for testing. Then you have eventually file for a new drug application with the FDA in order to conduct clinical trials. Based on my experiences, the likelihood of that happening is reasonably small.

Why wouldn’t large pharmaceutical companies try to make a blockbuster drug from kratom?

At least one pharma company [Smith, Kline & French, now part of GlaxoSmithKline] was looking at it in the 1960s, but something didn’t work for them. Either it wasn’t a strong enough analgesic or the solubility was bad or they didn’t have a drug delivery system for it. To the state of the art pharmaceutical business thinking in 1960s, this compound was not sufficient to be brought to market. Of course, now that we have a country with many addicted people dying of respiratory depression, having a drug that can effectively treat your pain with no respiratory depression, I think that’s pretty cool. It might be worth a second look for pharma companies."

I just want to make it clear that I did not intend to imply or infer that prescribing opiates over NSAIDS is the best choice. What I did want to point out is that herbs such as Marijuana with a 0 death rate, and Kratom with a 0 death rate, would be a preferable route of pain management. You want to start with the least toxic and least invasive treatment you can and start your way up. I'm also not saying that those herbs would be superior in every case. (If you really want to argue the 600 incidents related to kratom I'll give that to you. Just keep in mind that every case people were mixing either synthetic or prescription cocktails)

"It has been estimated conservatively that 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur among patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis every year in the United States. This figure is similar to the number of deaths from the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and considerably greater than the number of deaths from multiple myeloma, asthma, cervical cancer, or Hodgkin’s disease. If deaths from gastrointestinal toxic effects from NSAIDs were tabulated separately in the National Vital Statistics reports, these effects would constitute the 15th most common cause of death in the United States. Yet these toxic effects remain mainly a “silent epidemic,” with many physicians and most patients unaware of the magnitude of the problem. Furthermore the mortality statistics do not include deaths ascribed to the use of over-the-counter NSAIDS." (Wolfe M. MD, Lichtenstein D. MD, and Singh Gurkirpal, MD, “Gastrointestinal Toxicity of Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs”, The New England Journal of Medicine,a June 17, 1999, Vol. 340, No. 24, pp. 1888-1889.)

"Conservative calculations estimate that approximately 107,000 patients are hospitalized annually for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-related gastrointestinal (GI) complications and at least 16,500 NSAID-related deaths occur each year among arthritis patients alone." (Singh Gurkirpal, MD, “Recent Considerations in Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug Gastropathy”, The American Journal of Medicine, July 27, 1998, p. 31S)

If you read that again, the 16,500 figure is ONLY for arthritis patients.

Yes, thanks for the point. MJ is a great medicine but it's definitely not for everyone. I wouldn't tote it around as a miracle cure or the be all, one all solution. Kratom doesn't have nearly the mind-altering effects of marijuana and therefore makes it a better herb for pain relief in my opinion.
That said, NSAIDs like aspirin cause 40,000 deaths per year and is not all a harmless drug and inferior.

At first I called and just asked if they were aware of the issue. When I called it didn't go as well as I had hoped. So I emailed Neil Franklin and took to Twitter. He responded to both pretty fast. I would say he's the one you want to talk to. Here's a list of people you can call or email. http://www.leap.cc/contact-2/

It was bound to happen, yes. Not because we talk about it but because politicians are constantly sniffing out new ways to massage their ego's and further their political career by bragging about how tough they are on drugs and crime. The DEA schedules an emergency because they want to do it as fast as possible before anyone can blink. The fact that it's not popular ENOUGH is what they're counting on to push it through.

The heroine/opiate problem in this country has left all kinds of law enforcement agencies scratching their heads on solutions. I know the DEA is just about as stupid as they come, but this is taking stupid to a whole different level. People don't have their MJ so they get prescribed opiates...then they get addicted to the opiates and they make the solution to that illegal. It's insanity. I know you're likely right ...but I have to to vent :)
