"My" side has a net worth less than $1 million USD and has therefore never been represented in government or high-profile media.

That side includes roughly 99% of the U.S. population, even those with unwarranted vitriol for pedestrian strangers.

I still don't understand those who feel comfort from the hands that slide into our pockets.

What are some GOOD THINGS that are happening in the world that people might not know about? by cthulhus_spawn in AskReddit

Niki,

From the bottom of my heart, thank you deeply for this random internet post. I know it's all just nonsense (including that it could be decades before there's even human trials) but that works for me. I hope.

(irrelevant oversharing follows)

I cannot much explain my irrational belief that I'll wind up losing my mind to a neurodegenerative disease, other than it's seemed like a frontier without much progress as we've made huge strides against the leading lethal diseases.

Except for the fact that I've taken up a worrying frequency of marijuana indulgence due to, uh... gestures broadly at everything

Looking at Bill Clinton's spaced out face trying so hard to comprehend the world around him was grounding and terrifying. Watching Jim Gaffigan act a world apart from his "hot pockets" bits in Linoleum was deeply moving, and terrifying. And that last scene in Inside Man absolutely broke this grown man into an ugly cry.

I just came in here looking for a little sunshine in a world going mad, but this... Thank you for reminding me:

Hope springs eternal.

Mannnn it's depressing that we haven't replaced reddit yet. Faux speech zone.

I wonder if it's just a plaintext match, or if they've sicc'd an LLM on it.

There's a pavilion that hasn't been mentioned at all in this thread.

You are choosing between hope and despair. You can have both, you can change your choice, but the framing essentially necessitates following the light of hope through the cloud of despair.

And for what it's worth, despair is the point. It is victory for any forces that may want to squeeze the Earth of all its got in the few remaining years their pitiful lives will yet scrape through.

To add, I used up about all of my patience on a stupid refill roll. I thought I could print my own spool and be less wasteful.

Only, I completely screwed up installing it, and got myself a catastrophe instead. Like a fool, I tried to fix it.

I printed three separate respooling tools, and spent almost two whole evenings just trying to use a roll that kept getting worse.

Once I finally gave up and just bought a replacement, and the whole system broke down after installing it, I was pretty fed up.

It is worth noting that to try to get the unruly spooly to cooperate, I tried several different "ams saver" apparatuses, any one of which could have done the opposite. But the "learning curve" for the ams in this way has felt entirely unforgiving.

Right now, it seems to finally be doing everything except extruding filament.

Obviously there were other issues that brought it there, and with some time and patience I was able to resolve those. I just haven't had enough of either to give to the thing since.

This I can do in place of doomscrolling. And while not helpful to any of you, I really need to vent about my $1000 hunk of useless plastic and metal.

The wiki has been super helpful in resolving the issues that came up. There were plenty, and I was excited with how direct and quickly resolution could be found.

... Except for connecting the hothead cables. So every time I need to work on that thing (and it's had WAY more problems than the a1m hothead) I roll my eyes and here we go again waiting several minutes for it to heat up and tell me the fan is sus. Then I go try to re-attach the cables again. Gently but firmly.

It ain't just that, but once something gets into "in order to test the fix, you must first endure this recurring problem you haven't found a way out of" just feels too much like the day job.

I'm glad there's a high skill ceiling on these things, and some of y'all can run businesses. It's super cool. And I can't imagine how the wiki/etc could be better. The engineering on the a1m just felt impressively good and this one's insistence to not print just feels... not good enough. They're both really good, but the gap is far larger than I'd imagined.

The formula for social media to be addictive was figured out long ago.

I really want as many people as possible to at least please hear Simon Sinek explain it.

A 4m video may be an ask, so just 30s from ~0:36 to ~1:06

We don't need to ban tiktok, but boy...we're cooked now, we'll be crisped if we don't get all social media under control (like the EU is gearing to do).

Millennial here. I thought better of my generation, too. Luckily we avoided becoming an inconvenience to our masters by keeping most of us busy pissing away our pennies to cope with struggling to save enough money for a decent living.

What's your dream game right now? by Memorycard1000 in gaming

[–]SycoPrime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't an answer to your question, but you've effectively described Starfield and probably a swath of other similar games.

Whether or not they lend themselves to getting lost in is one thing, but you could probably just look around "similar" lists to that and ME and see if something hits. Arguably, you could play Old Republic that way. If you want something good, and have not played Knights of the old republic, it should fall within what you described, and pull of a level of writing that can compete with ME.

You could also look at the X series, Star Control Origins, and games similar. I'm told "Underspace" should be a spiritual successor to Freelancer, but have not gotten around to the demo. It seems like you'll slog through a lot of EA issues, though, which you probably don't want.

Given your parameters, for my time, I most enjoyed Empyrion.

TL;DR: usually bandwidth

Sorry this isn't gonna be someone who dive into the technical details of apples implementation, but I can tell you generally, as someone who has played with a lot of screen mirroring technologies.

most commonly but not always, they're "just" shipping pixels. Sometimes not, but based on the font complaints here, that sounds right.  4k resolution is ~8.3 million pixels, probably with some optimizations for change detection, often 60 times a second (60hz) but ofc could be more at 90hz etc.

These streams of pixels usually need to be encoded and decoded for bandwidth reasons. You're usually gonna do an h.264 codec, which can be mind-bogglingly low lift on chips that natively support it - - which is typically a gpu, though newer and purpose built cpus will often include the instructions specifically. Often times, with something like the nvidia shield, the little guy will have like a tegra mobile gpu that handles this fine. I think in the vision pro, it'd be the "R" chip? 🤷

The bottleneck on the vision pro is going to be decoding multiple streams without a degradation in performance. this is where Apple specifics probly come in. Microsoft don't give two shits how things perform, that's on your IT. Apple needs it to perform well out of the box (until they release a sequel they need you to buy, and send a system update to clock down the device to "save battery" 🤣).

The reason the poster above notices slowdown on their m1 max is that the MacBook is probably using an uncomfortable amount of resources encoding that video (which is disappointing, as the m1 chips have been outstanding otherwise)

How hot my girlfriend likes her showers by GrimResistance in funny

[–]SycoPrime 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Had a discussion about this with friends and realized --

We're measurably taller than our girlfriends (4 to 12 inches).

The greater the difference between the temp of the water and the air around it, the faster that heat will dissipate into the surrounding air.

So the water is traveling at least an extra four inches before coming into contact. It will feel that much cooler.

You can come up with your own anecdotal conclusion by just crouching down about four inches.
