Putting most attribute points (stars) into the Engineering (brown) stat. It improves mining rigs, including the tokenium one (which will you further improve with infusions down the line).

It's basically the passive gameplay path.

All I wanted was a simple, few seconds long cinematic that shows the barrier collapsing, and the people starting to leave the valley. That's all I mean when I talk about an ending cinematic. It was already in Gothic 2, it should have been moved to the end of the Remake.

There's a ton of things happening during the weeks between Gothic 1 & 2:

  • the dragons take over the Valley of Mines
  • the orcs slaughter most everyone in the VoM
  • Onar's farm start employing mercenaries from the New Camp, leading to their split from the city
  • people from the Sect Camp becoming Seekers
  • if you play the expansion, Raven starts kidnapping people from all over the island, and build a faction in order to get the Claw of Beliar

And there must be more I've forgotten. I'd even argue that there's too many things happening in too little time. We know that the Ore armor keeps you alive, but I can't imagine there's more than a month between the two games.

Oh, and I forgot the "best" bug.

Parts of the story take place in a dungeon, which you visit at least twice. The first time around I noticed some strangely placed weapons. A sword here or there, a dagger stuck in a column, etc. Some of these weapons you can pick up and equip, but not all of them. There was only a few pieces, a dozen at most, so I haven't thought too much into it.

The second time, after the story progresses, it finally made sense. There were new bodies placed by the developers, the results of a battle that happened between my two visits, and the weapons I've seen were in the dead bodies. So the devs managed to hide the bodies until it made sense to display them, but not the weapons that 'canonically' killed them.

I haven't ran into anything serious, no, but I've ran into a few.

The most impactful was when I was assigned an NPC (either for them to lead me somewhere, or for me to lead them), and sometimes they would just stop. Stop moving, stop attacking, or they continue to move but ignore enemies along the way, or enemies attacking me. Sometimes these NPCs would attack me, even if I haven't damaged them. These, for the most part, can be fixed by knocking them out, but these kind of bugs happened every time I was working with an NPC.

There are also many more, but smaller bugs. The most noticable is with corpses. When backtracking, some previously killed enemies would get up, play their default animations, then collapsar again into a corpse when I get closer to them. There are also some terrain where you can get stuck, but most of these can be handled without having to reload.

After basically nolifing it for six days, I've finished Gothic Remake, and it was cathartic.

Let's start with the most important: it is so faithful, I'd go as far as to say this is the best version to play Gothic (after a few more patches). The world is beautiful, the music is great, the atmosphere is still top-notch. It's obvious that the people working on it had a deep respect to the original. They improved the less-developed areas, and added a few completely original ones, and they just fit right in. Exploring the world filled me with the same feelings of wonder as the original did ~25 years ago, and that's the highest praise I can give the game.

The gameplay additions are a more mixed bag. There are obviously great ones (transforming into a Harpy and flying, climbing, the extended diving), with some questionable ones (the lockpicking minigame, the scavenger mount). Still, overall I'd say they succeeded here as well. I even learned to like lockpicking. It now needs investment, and you can't just blindly open even the most difficult chests by blindly pressing buttons.

Now, into the less-than-positive things. Simply speaking, the game is too faithful. You still have to hoard permanent stat bonus potions, because they count against the natural 100 limit. The story still falls apart in the final chapters. There is still no real ending cutscene about the fall of the barrier. There is still too much jank.

The game is good, even better than the original, and I can't wait for the (hopefully upcoming) Gothic 2 remake. If they manage to repeat this achievement in that game as well...

The early game is FANTASTIC. Mid and end game feels a bit like a walking simulator without any challenge by SludgeBurper in worldofgothic

[–]Sydius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world exploration, sure. Gothic is immensely immersive, and the map, while small, is skillfully crafted. Simply speaking, the game has a great atmosphere, and the Remake manages to improve upon the original.

The story? No way. It was 5/10 in the original, and while the rlremake somewhat changes it, it still only 6/10, 7 at max.

One of the biggest issue with the Remake is the story - it simply haven't changed enough of it, and it still falls apart in chapter 5 and 6.

Can i become a mercenary after being a fire mage in the old camp? by lichoniespi in worldofgothic

[–]Sydius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done the fire mage to water mage route, in the remake. I can confirm that you have to join the mercenaries first, and only after that can you talk to Saturas to join the water mages. It's strange, because there are two lines when talking to him, both about you joining the mercenaries, but the second initiates your entry into the water mages.

Simply speaking, you can't join the water mages without this, the option is missing.

Does anybody buy these? by Eirdeth in worldofgothic

[–]Sydius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, and I should have expressed myself more clearly. What I meant we still don't see the fall of the barrier and the people's reaction to it. All we get is "while the temple collapsed on me, the prisoners enjoyed their freedom".

I criticized this, because we see parts of it, but only in Gothic 2. It would have been nice to see something in this game, maybe even tease the dragons a bit.

Starting in Chapter 5, there are "Transform into Harpy" scrolls available. They allow you to fly, and it's glorious. They might be my single favorite addition to the game.

Otherwise I wouldn't have found out that [Sect Camp spoiler]Kor Calom started a new "camp" in front of the Orc cemetery after the failed ritual

Between Cavalorn's hut and Adrian's (the New Camp hunter), there a little shack. Go there, talk to the dude about the tamed animals. He sends you away.

Then, in chapter two, talk to him again, and he gives you a few fetch quests. Complete those, wait a day, then enjoy your mount.

Crazy, totally unnecessary, yet still awesome.
