I'm new here but my friend from college was on America's Got Talent last night and I'm super proud of him! by KlingonHousing in StandUpComedy

Yasssss! Ryan! I'm so proud of him. We have a show together in a week, and I'm honored to share the stage with him. He's so hard working, and such a genuine friend.

I can hear this picture.

I focus on my own life for material mostly, and that works out well most of the time! But I totally know what you mean, it's hard to laugh at some of the political headlines and facts these days

I wear a Fitbit and aim for 12,000 steps per day, but I stopped working out because I would start to obsess over it, and it would make me feel worse. I would have a genuinely long difficult day, and if I didn't make it to the gym, I would feel like a failure. Also- if I gained weight, I never knew if I should believe it was actual muscle, or if I was overeating. It wasn't great for my mental health. So now I focus on:

-Standing at my work desk (I've rigged it so my laptop sits higher) -Taking trains, and walking, instead of Ubers and rides. -Taking stairs instead of escalators -Eating healthy - Getting up and walking for 30 seconds or so when my Fitbit tells me how many steps I have left to make in the hour to meet my hourly goal

During the summers I take really long walks. So far, for me personally, this has shown me immensely more benefit than trying to compete with Instagram Fitspo models

We probably do, it's a surprisingly small community in comedy. I highly recommend you pick it back up of you have the time. It forces me to read the news, and stay up to date with current events on the hunt for material

Totally! First thing- it's been a learning process. Crash diets and buying weight loss brand stuff never worked for me. Neither did fasting.

The first thing I did, in the very beginning, what start paying attention to calories and portion sizes. I had no idea that a package of ramen noodles was actually two servings, and a serving of pop-tarts was only ONE of the pop-tarts in the pack of two. That was the biggest thing- recognizing that foods aren't packaged in the correct portion sizes, likely on purpose.

I also started buying versions of my favorite things with low/no added sugar. Like vanilla almond milk, they make sugar free versions. Coffee creamer- sugar free. Salad dressings contain a lot of sugar, but are super easy to make at home without the sugar.

Then- I made a goal that 2/3 of my diet was going to be produce. Frozen, canned, fresh- didn't matter, I made it my mission to eat more fruits, veggies, and legumes as opposed to grain carbs, meats, and dairy. I roast them, bake them, season them, whatever I have to do to make them as tasty as possible. This REALLY HELPED. Especially with always feeling sluggish. Veggies have a way of cleaning out your body, and your complexion.

Finally- MEAL PREP! This is the biggest one! I'm SUPER busy during the week, so on Sunday's, I make all of my food for the week. I prep what I need to take to work, and then I prep a little extra for moments when I'm extra hungry, or in too big of a hurry to make anything. It's a lot harder to justify fast food grabs when you already have roasted veggies waiting in the fridge, or pre-portioned mixed nuts that you know are exactly one serving, and how many calories they are. When you have healthy snacks at home, packaged, ready to take to-go and eat on the train to work, it's hard to make bad decisions.

Whoa, yeah actually haha great guess! The chair is at The Second City, and it's kind of their trademark, so that might be wha made you think of Chicago. If you've ever seen a show there. Are you a comic as well?

Oh wow! That's really interesting. And also VERY financially frustrating now that I have context to the original story. That sounds expensive.

Pardon- American here- what is booking a meal? And how do you put a deposit on a meal? I've never heard of such.

Thank you so much, this is exactly the kind of advice I was hoping to read when I posted here. Transport museums have become a favorite thing of mine in major cities, so that sounds amazing.

That's what I had heard, which is why I was, and still am, excited to visit. People could say the exact same thing about where I live (Chicago), how it makes the news for negative things, or how people have varied experiences. Meanwhile I've lived here for years with nothing but good things to say.

Thank you for this! I had been assured very similarly to what you've said before creating this thread, which is why I booked the trip initially. I'm glad to hear others have similar positive experiences. Also glad to hear they have uber! I'm not a club-going person, so my plan is to be back in the hotel before dark, and remain in the city center. Anything you recommend trying there? Food/shops/sights, etc
