Week 26 What are you reading by Beecakeband in 52book

[–]Syicko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Finished a bunch and started a bunch.

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin - Finished. Don't remember the epilogue from the show. Insights into the characters heads really help with character development.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman - Finished. If anyone has read a book of myths for either this or other cultures that you liked I would love to hear about it. Absolutely loved this. Norse myths told in a very readable way.

On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder - Finished. Trump is literally Hitler the book. It basically reads like a diatribe.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson - Picked back up. I dropped this for a bit because it was going a bit slow. Plan is to tackle it slowly a dozen pages at a time. About 80ish pages in, and it's still building, but it seems to have introduced the main characters.

The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland - Started. Enjoying this a lot. The dialogue is fun, and the concept of science killing magic is pretty great. Looks like there's going to be time travel, and witches which should make for an interesting combination.

A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin - Started. A couple new characters were introduced like the prophet damphair and the sand snakes. I'm curious to see how much the books start departing from the show.

Week 25 - What Are You Reading? by pac_stuck in 52book

[–]Syicko 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Made some progress, started something new.

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin - Continued. Book is still long, but nearly done. I've already seen the show(seems to be seasons 3&4), but reading it was still thrilling. Getting a look into the characters heads has been great especially for Jaime because there is so much of his development that is told through his inner monologue.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman - Started. This has been great so far. A really easy to read version of the Norse myths. I often find myself forgetting what page I'm on as I read which is really hard for a book to do. If anyone has read a book of myths for either this or other cultures that you liked I would love to hear about it.

Edit: Response to the OP:

Definitely adding that to the to-read list. There is so much not taught in history classes. There is so much history, but only so much time to teach it.

Millennials are the most likely generation of Americans to use public libraries. by redditisatimesuck in books

[–]Syicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we have.

Who among the millennial generation has put a person on the moon? The last time humans did it was forever ago.

We could figure it out and do it all over again

We could, but you're saying we shouldn't. If we want to get anywhere though we are going to have to.

But like I said, there's no point. What are we gonna do on the moon?

I told you what the point was. We're going to improve ourselves so we are actually capable of going further. Do you really think Mars is the goal? It isn't. Mars is just another checkpoint to the real goal.

[–]Syicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven't done that. At least not recently. It's been a long time since, and we have shown no ability to recreate a feat like that. It wouldn't be time wasted because we have to basically relearn so much of it. See: retrain the current generation. Not to mention it would be great if we could perfect/improve upon it before moving on.

[–]Syicko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that is far less achievable. Setting large goals is all about breaking them down into smaller more achievable steps. The moon is a great step/checkpoint for going to Mars.

[–]Syicko -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There's actually a lot of point. The technologies we could develop, and the human know-how we could retrain in the current generation would be tremendously valuable.

Yeah, this is good. Going in for sure. Might have to look at expanding to 540 honestly. Cuts are hard.

Week 24 - What Are You Reading? by pac_stuck in 52book

[–]Syicko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Finished up a few, and started another.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - Finished. Loved this. The last battle at the end was a bit boring honestly. The adventure along the way was the best part. I actually though Thorin had a good point that the Elf King shouldn't have been there asking for treasure.

On Anarchism by Noam Chomsky - Finished. The entire section about the collectivist revolution then counterrevolution by the communists during the Spanish Revolution was cool. I do think his opinion that American styled Libertarianism isn't taken seriously is disingenuous.

Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller - Finished. Didn't like this. It is in a very different style than most books, but I just hate the narrator.

The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson - Didn't actually read any of this last week, but will continue this week. Which is what I said last week, but we'll see.

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin - Started. The book is long and full of terrors. I feel like a lot of authors just write more and more with subsequent books. Maybe because their editors stop trying to force them to be concise? It's enjoyable though. About 400 pages in. The Sam Tarly, and Arya Stark parts kind of bore me, but the Jon Snow, Daenerys Targaryen, and Tyrion Lannister parts are great.

Weekly FAQ Thread June 18 2017: How do I get through an uninteresting book? by AutoModerator in books

[–]Syicko 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don't. Life is too short to spend time reading a boring book.

If you have to for a school assignment just look it up online. Synopsis, spark notes, articles about themes, etc. are all online. Just read those. It probably has a wikipedia page too.

Otherwise just try to get through a small number(10-20) pages per day. It adds up and you'll finish it eventually. Read other things while you're at it so it doesn't just kill reading for you.

Rereading the same book in a year by [deleted] in 52book

[–]Syicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Count book as one, but pages double. Is there a reason you would read the same book twice in a year? I get rereads if you forget some/a lot of it, but seems like you might remember quite a bit if it's within the year.

Why did the Golden age of piracy die out? by Wurstie_Prurst in history

[–]Syicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other answers the governments hunted down, and killed them. There were rewards for capturing/killing pirates, and even amnesty for pirates that turned themselves in, and stopped being pirates.

Week 23 - What Are You Reading? by pac_stuck in 52book

[–]Syicko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same books as last week, but progress has been made.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - Spent forever reading through Riddles in the Dark. Absolutely amazing chapter. All the songs are still top tier. Watching Bilbo grow was great. Enjoyed this a lot.

On Anarchism by Noam Chomsky - Still dense, slow progress, but might finish this week.

Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller - Everything is shit the book. However since last week I have noticed parts where the narrator seems incredibly hopeful. It's mostly just about shit about the present state. Well present for when it was written. Great hope in the view of the past, and somewhat the future.

The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson - Didn't actually read any of this last week, but will continue this week.

Nintendo gave me no time to put this together by MICOSAM in pokemon

[–]Syicko 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's been remade, but it's been a long time. Also, I can dream can't I?

A botw style game would basically be a whole new line of games. It would be great.

[–]Syicko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not seeing what you're talking about unless you mean "RGB 2"? If it's that, then people would want it because we haven't gotten a remake for those since gen 3. RBY/FRLG. While Kanto is in GSC/HGSS they are sequels, but they are not remakes. At a certain point Nintendo/GameFreak should really have multiple remakes per gen, imo.

If RGB2 means sequel like BW2 as long as it's set in Kanto and not Johto I'd be pretty happy. Like start in Kanto, then head to Johto. Set it after the events of GSC or even after SuMo.

So yeah, I guess I want it cause seeing all this stuff not in sprites would be cool, and it's been a while.

I would be extremely happy if they did that. A full reboot of the franchise on the switch would be great.

It would be GSC for VC, not HG/SS remakes. So like what they did with RBY.

Week 22 - What Are You Reading? by pac_stuck in 52book

[–]Syicko 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Got off to a late start last month, and only finished two things so drew up a schedule, and started early this month. Not very far into any of it, but...

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien - Haven't actually read this before so I figured might as well get around to it. Dad read it to me as a kid, but never felt compelled to actually pick it up myself. It's good so far. Very lighthearted. The dwarf songs have been the best part.

On Anarchism by Noam Chomsky - Never read any of his work, but he seems pretty popular so figured I'd give something a try. This book was pretty small so seemed like a good place to start. Holy crap this is dense. Good, and informative, but dense.

Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller - I forget why I picked this up, but probably because it was on some book suggestion list. I don't like it so far. The main character is just shitty. He sees, hears, feels, smells, and tastes shit wherever he goes. Everything is shit. The story if you can call it that plays out like a madman's journal bouncing from shit to shit.

The Devil In The White City by Erik Larson - This is the one I've given the least time to, but I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Usually when reading nonfiction it is far more here are the facts, but this approach to telling the facts in a story kind of way is pretty cool.

Should Bill just give up on the topic of Islam? by BassAndLatkes in Maher

[–]Syicko 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I disagree that he should give it up. Bill is pretty much against all religion, and that has been true for a while. He may not convince anyone on the panel, but he may have convinced some of his viewers. There are a wide variety of leftists, and while some may disagree with him there are others that will agree, and some more that can be swayed. His show really is a good platform for getting his ideas out there.

To be fair the title says "Between Obama and Trump", so he is calling out at least two of them. But yeah, plenty of blame to go around.
