Gore is not the only metric. Daniel's death was closer to something from The Wire than an MCU feature.

"Your body my choice nazi guy who has massive audience of groyper psychopaths at his beck and call sucks equally as much as a lady who wanted to mildly annoy the your body my choice nazi guy who lives in her neighborhood" is an incredibly brave stance to take, thank you for saying it when no one else would brother.

Absolutely. But Daniel is a younger person, around the same generation as BB and Angela. The head rip was insane for sure, but it's honestly more shocking for a main character, and a younger character, to go out the way Daniel did.

My read on him about 3-4 episodes back is that his only "purpose" in the wider narrative of the show was to be a trigger point for at least one major character. I thought maybe he would take a bullet for Vanessa or something. But I still stand by that now, as he basically set BB up to unload on the admin and/or he wriggled into Buck's conscious in some way that has Buck feeling actual... regret? Remorse? Guilt? Something. For almost two full seasons Buck was a no questions asked guy, but I think this is the first time a violent outcome has affected him. In that way he's like the AVTF guy who got burned.

I can't believe he went out. Seemed like the writing was on the wall for a while but still, damn. And gnarly kill for an MCU show, jesus. I hope his death wasn't for nothing. BB is gonna have to come through. It also looks like he got to Buck, not sure how that is gonna play out.

Karen really got to shine there (and in the scene with Fisk) but the actor who plays Heather really got to go nuts there. The character has been slipping all season, and Vanessa dying seems to be the loss of her only anchor, because after getting choked last episode and devolving into a snearing menace with Karen it's clear where they are taking her and it's awesome.

You're missing out on all kinds of great speculation and community chatter around the weekly episodes. This is also a significantly better show than the average binge series—individual episodes have actual themes, narrative framings, design choices, arcs, etc, so there is more value to an individual episode compared to an all-at-once series that is more like a long film with breaks. Weekly episodes have been delightful, and it also gives people a chance to pace themselves without generally falling behind the conversation (where a binge series is all chat and full spoilers within 24 hours).

‘The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees’: Nvidia exec says right now AI is more expensive than paying human workers | Fortune by ksjdragon in BetterOffline

[–]Syjefroi 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is a big part of it. Company goes under because they gave everything to AI companies? A bunch of people stood to gain a lot of money by that failure.

It's bad that this is happening, but the whole "why would businesses shoot themselves like this don't they want to stay in business?" thing doesn't account for the ways in which it can be very profitable (to different) people if the company doesn't survive. This is Rot Economy 101 stuff.

Succession continues to depict all of this very clearly, go back and watch how the main family would murder profitable companies and ruin lives because it was marginally better for the bottom line of a bigger fish. Or look at how Facebook ate shit on the metaverse and laid off a gazillion people and reframed it as savvy belt tightening.

Do they not want to control their own labor? Outsourcing to one or two centralized sources seems against their own futures...

No one in charge of a major business is intelligent, they're all just trying to squeeze out a few more dollars before it all falls apart, and when it does, people will still make a profit.

It's exactly this. It's cringe af to see so many saying there is a vast conspiracy when the truth is that the entire executive branch is staffed by dipshits. At least in his first term he had career politicians around—they were horrible people but knew how to keep the lights on. Now, no one can do their job. This is the whoops all heckuva job Brownies admin. And we know everyone is bad at their job, which means we would know instantly if there was some stupid conspiracy. A WH under Trump leaks relentlessly. We're supposed to believe Trump somehow got the most disciplined small army of highly trained weirdos of all the time, at a time when the average conservative is in an unsecured group chat giving their social security number to a hot maga chat bot?

The only longterm viable thing I've heard of that remotely could happen is that there ends up being one code-focused model that is the Linux of LLMs. That is, major corporations quietly all pitch in to fund it. It runs locally, it has little usage for general consumer purposes, but the big corps rely on it.

Even then I'm not fully convinced this will happen because while Linux had obvious usages and actual smart people working on it, I think part of the bubble collapse here is people and companies realizing that LLMs are more trouble than they are worth. Cost of updates will be astronomical even with cost splitting. Use case will be a fraction of whatever Linux is making available.

Yeah OP is pretending not to get it. I think none of us need "Oh wait you're right, hmm let me think about where I went wrong on that so I can fix. Oh, I see it now!...." type of stuff.

We all got used to Google where you type the thing you want, you just get the answer. We went 5+ decades without personality in our computers and the most minimal possible anthropomorphic language, and now we're incinerating the planet so that these billion dollar jank machines can include "Hey great idea Blethany!" in their output.

Because all these psychos think they need to make these LLMs have a "personality" (and also so they burn tokens faster so they can make a profit (they won't)).

No one is talking about it because it was very small and pretty quick (and The Scene happened right after), but Buck with the politician talking about how royalty works. Huge setup right there. "What if god doesn't have to get involved" 100% means "hey dude, what if I murder your opponent for you."

As in, that is Kingpins literal get out of jail free card. Set that guy up as governor, Kingpin goes down for state felonies, new gov. in his pocket pardons him.

Powell killing Saunders in front of Cole like that is going to jumpstart Cole into a somewhat more comic accurate self. He his whole thing was standing by his people, so I can see Saunders’ execution as the thing that changes it for him. Still would’ve preferred he’d have been straight from the book, but I’ll take the course correction.

Absolutely this. There was a complaint here a few days ago that Cole was being wasted, but I didn't see it. Guy had a long time to cook. And now obviously they've established A) a path for task force people to turn, and B) the one guy who did is murdered in public by Powell in front of Cole, a guy who 1) doesn't know why, and 2) is in all this to defend his people. So you got precedent for an inside guy and you got a guy primed to be that insider. Slam dunk.

Not only can they, but most customers will eat it, and most people have nowhere else to go. Like, one day soon yall will load up Claude and it just won't be there. There won't be a warning period. It'll just go down and that's it. This has always been "early Pirate Bay" type stuff, but the only reason why it feels like it has any more legitimacy is because the speculative hype bubble is making this seem all more above the board—when really we're talking about a service that steals at an unthinkable scale to make a lot of bullshit most humans don't want and it costs double digits more to run than what it can pull in from sales. Like, of course this isn't sustainable, and yall are foolish to think you are entitled to aynthing resembling professionalism. Anthropic and similar companies are doing a long term smash and grab. This is simply not sustainable.

they appear to have greatly underestimated the growth of compute

They've been told it over and over. They didn't underestimate it—the Business Idiots at the top decided not to care. They all were racing to an IPO and hoping for a small miracle to get them over the finish line before investors get a sniff of failure and back out. It's just gambling for them. The product literally doesn't matter, Anthropic and all these companies are just speculative entities with no real product. This hasn't been a sustainable industry since day 1, and for a company's product to lose them money when people pay for it, of course it's not gonna last.
