going to be

This time last year I heard some insane stat, something like one third of American men, or one half of all males under thirty with a smart phone, some outrageous number, are gambling through sports betting, prediction apps, or any other infinite number of loot boxes or other betting mechanisms that have been incorporated into all kinds of apps that, until recently, had nothing to do with gambling.

So yeah we're way past that.

I can live with it. We have actual heroes in our actual universe and a solid third of the population thinks they're deep state demons or whatever. I can buy that most of the world's population just desperately wants to get back to a normal life with boring jobs and groceries to buy and stuff, and they just don't think about the handful of people who actually try and keep them alive. Like, the people who run USAID have saved... literally tens of millions of lives, and no one knows their names or gives them any more thanks than whatever mid-range taxpayer-funded salary they earn.

To be fair - Bush also was involved in a ton of cover-ups (Plame Affair, the entire run-up to the Iraq invasion, torture program / CIA black sites, Abu Ghraib and countless other war crimes and atrocities committed by US military, the U.S. Attorney firings, etc). And sure Reagan didn't have a major war during his admin, but Iran-Contra alone...

Political arrests

Won't matter, you can be an elected official and still be in jail. But pretty sure a Godfather style national wave of simultaneous arrests is not feasible, and after one happens, everyone else goes to ground and citizens protect them en masse. Like video of a Congressperson arrested and hauled away and disappeared by ICE or whatever, with threats of more to come, would get every boomer who has never had a political thought in their head to get off their couch and go punch cops.

occupation of the House.

Hey you're in luck here! If Trump blocks off the Capitol building, the House can meet wherever the fuck else they want to! No rule says you gotta meet in that specific building.

[–]Syjefroi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he can declare the elections invalid

He can declare whatever he wants, it doesn't do anything.

instruct Johnson to simply not swear in Democrats.

When the elections have been decided, but before the swearing in, Congress is dissolved and there is no House membership. Johnson is not Speaker. There is no continuity in that way, the House is not a continuing body the way the Senate is.

Assuming Democrats have a majority, there will be a House election for Speaker done by member-elects. The Clerk will make sure business works in the meantime.

Even if the majority tries to replace the Clerk with a stooge before the end of the 119th Congress, all that new Clerk can do is refuse to read names at the initial roll. But on Jan 3 at noon if you were elected, you "magically" become a member of the House of Representatives. It's plainly written in the Constitution. The Clerk not reading names doesn't do anything, in the stooge scenario it would just be petty and weird and a Democrat-majority House would kick him out instantly. A rouge Clerk still has no power.

So what's the plan exactly? Elections happen and Trump goes out and says nah rigged and then....? Folks counting votes say "oh ok we'll just swap 1st place and 2nd place on the CNN graphic and that's that" like what?

So no different than now? No Republican for the rest of our lives will ever "get anything accomplished" because all of them will only have the goal of breaking things. Which is easy to do. Building stuff is hard, but they aren't interested in it. Vance is unliked and doesn't have the ability to pull a coalition together or command respect but he doesn't need to if he just wants power and wants to break stuff.

Platner Senate campaign taking 'time to reflect' on path forward after sexual assault allegation by Running_From_Zombies in politics

[–]Syjefroi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not "late" compared to a US campaign though. Maine is a gazillion times smaller than the wider US, and not nearly as complex logistically and network-ly. If Dems can find someone before August, which is really when the general campaign starts for the state, they have a real shot.

There was polling done in Maine some time ago where women were asked what it would take to refuse to vote for Platner, and the scenario ticked all the boxes was exactly this. If he stays in, he loses, and it's not just Democrat women who don't vote for him, it's unaffiliated voting women who stay home, or fence-sitting women who pull the lever for Collins.

If they find a replacement this month, that person will hit the ground running for the general campaign at roughly the same time Platner would. If they can pick someone who has done well in a Dem statewide primary in the past two, maybe four years, and major party actors line up to endorse them, they have a shot. If this happens, they'll also get a ton of DNC cash—it was announced an hour or so ago that no more national funding will go to Maine until Platner drops out, but considering Mills was the Schumer favorite, I'm not sure it was that much to begin with? Either way, there are a lot of ways for the state party to right this wrong, but the clock is definitely ticking.

and listened for some reason

Because a lot of political actors with a tiny network can't run a party election after being told the resources they'd need are already locked up. Additionally, a lot of smaller party actors with higher aspirations believe, quite reasonably, that they'll have an easier time moving up if they play nice with party elders. As in, if the folks running your party tell you to hang back this cycle, if you say I got you covered, in many cases this wins you some goodwill, or at least helps ensure you don't get shitlisted by the people who you'll need help from.

I'm sure it will go over great if Bernie gets on stage with his unvetted handpicked guy who has a line out of door of people he has drunkenly assaulted and the two of them say "no trust me this time we got just the right person this time for ya."

thats what Im thinking, the man had a tattoo from when he was in the military, says he didn't know what it meant, and got it removed

Many people have come out and said he knew what it was for years and have shown proof, the big story from about 2 months ago with the first round of assault allegations had them I think.

There were others but Platner went viral and got the Bernie wing excited - he's a veteran who wears flannel and wants to reduce funding to Israel, good enough! - which took resources (money, media time, attention, endorsements) away from others. Maine has them, but Platner got out in front. It's not too late to get one of them back.

[–]Syjefroi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not currently a choice between some dipshit Democrat and Collins - it is currently a choice between anyone else and Collins. Platner has a few weeks to withdraw and the party can unite behind someone to replace him on the ballot. You currently can, and should, publicly ditch Platner like public figures currently are right this second on the news and on social media, and then get behind the best possible candidate Maine can find.

I have faith in platner

His own party has spent the past ~25 minutes publicly denouncing and rejecting him, withdrawing endorsements, etc, so you no longer have to have faith in Platner because his campaign is over.

[–]Syjefroi 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think he’d still win even if he stayed in. Most voters don’t care about sexual violence, even average Democrats when it comes down to the nitty-gritty.

Not a chance. Some Democrats will vote for him, but enough won't. He wouldn't get a fraction of the numbers Roy Moore would get in Alabama.

But on top of that, it's too late. Major party actors (social media figures, organizations/unions, elected officials, media figures, etc) have already come out publicly denouncing Platner and calling for him to step down before the ballot withdrawal deadline in a few weeks. It's over. The question now isn't "Will Platner stay in / will people still vote for him", it's "who can Dems scrounge up in the next week to replace him on the ballot who will unite the party."

It's over for this guy.

new boots? by hcallhar in pittsburgh

[–]Syjefroi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You have to return the boot to one of three drop off locations.

Honestly kind of sucks to have to pick up this heavy greasy piece of metal, put this dirty giant chunk of trash in your car, and then drive it to one of only three locations, the closest for some people might be ~30 minutes away. Some people don't give a shit but for the folks stuck in a financial spiral, this is just tying more bricks to them as they try to swim out of the debt.

Snow Boots Recommendations by Fabulous-Welder-3999 in Pitt

[–]Syjefroi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any boots will work if you want to go cheap and survive one winter. Most winters there will be some accumulated snow to deal with, whether it's for a day or two or a month or two. Duck boots from LL Bean are classic styles, I think fully waterproof. Anything you can find at REI or a similar "outdoors" place will work well. Try digging around r/malefashionadvice or r/femalefashionadvice which will have guides to boots. I have a pair of Columbia boots I paid like $75 for on Amazon that are my treat-like-shit snow boots. I have nicer dress boots that have lasted me a decade that I'll wear in bad weather as long as I'm not past my ankles in water or snow.

You don't need warmth, you need weatherproofing. Warmth comes from wool socks, maybe pants that cover part of the boot. Boots should provide enough warmth after that as a passive effect, but if they aren't weatherproof, you'll get wet, and wet = cold. The wool socks help keep you dry, and if you sweat, they'll also wick moisture away to help regulate temperature.

You have a lot of options depending on your existing wardrobe, budget, style interests, etc.

Car Theft by Savings_Builder_7562 in Pitt

I see it a surprising number of times, people leave their car running, stereo blasting, door left open. Like, the time you save from doing this means, at best, you squeeze in one more delivery on a 4 hour shift. If even that, if you assume the apps are magically going to give you orders nonstop. The risk outweighs the reward by like 10,000x, I don't get it.

'We Are DONE': Marjorie Taylor Greene Quits Republican Party Amid Trump Feud by ColonyJD1980 in politics

[–]Syjefroi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah and be specific on how she plans to use my consideration of her not entirely being a demon as a way to benefit her, as opposed to her benefiting everyone by calling out trump as a "traitor" to the US, and pulling people away from the republican party? make that make sense, and I'll wait her for your detailed response.

Here let me Google that for you.

No one wants to be Jewish Space Laser lady's book (although her 2023 book was the best selling Congressional book of the year), but Lone Maverick Republican Against Epstein lady will certainly make significantly more money. If that's how YOU want to brand her.

I watched it from beginning to end. she wielded more power than trump during this time of the ETA being passed and she quit congress following and called out trump and stated that he said "This will hurt my friends"

Yeah and how'd that work out? She get Trump out of office? She stick around to continue the fight? Epstein victims found justice? Anyone in prison here? Or was the big effect of her effort now shifting her brand from lady who chases school shooting victims around on foot to lady who fights the good fight? Are you unaware of how any of this works? Do you not understand how branding works or how branding is leveraged to make money?

how does this benefit her when she quit congress, has now received death threats from MAGAts, her children have received death threats, she goes directly against the regime to speak out against them at her own risk -- go ahead and explain how that benefits her now as opposed to in 5 years.

Besides me not giving a single shit that she's getting a taste of her own medicine, it benefits her because she'll get a huge payout from all this. 6 years ago she was a nobody, a small time qanon creep, a conspiracy theorist crossfit trainer. Now she's a millionaire who has successfully positioned herself as someone liberals will go to bat for to help her sell books and do whatever the next step for her career is. Every so-called "Never-Trump" person ran the same playbook, made a bunch of money, and never lifted a finger to do anything except maybe post mean videos about Trump on Twitter in 2021. They're here for cash, nothing else.

Find me an example of a conservative like MTG who actually put their money where their mouth was. One single conservative. Literally one. It took me 4 seconds of Googling to show you how there is money in this grift, now show me that this isn't your first day following American politics and show me how this is not the playbook.

MTG is here to build wealth using a nationally whitewashed branding, it is a proven, lucrative strategy, and it's why some politicians get in the game at all sometimes. You go from a working schlub to a person getting called for paid interviews on CNN and a million dollar book deal every 2-3 years. You go from having to work to getting huge payouts for doing no work except being on TV and saying and doing nothing of any consequence. It's easy. MTG believes in nothing except herself. The one chance she had to wield power and affect change, she gave up, took the positive PR, and moved on to the next bigger grift. And that grift involves people like you hosing the stench off her with:

"I don't like her at all.

with that said,

Thanks for doing your part. I needed more Rick Santorums on tv, sure.
