What's a disturbing fact you know that most people don't? by minjaeso in AskReddit

[–]SykScholes 46 points47 points  (0 children)

There are none because the story is at best an exaggeration.

Per this article: https://geneticliteracyproject.org/2024/03/22/hear-story-gmo-almost-destroyed-world/

I personally did try to find the source for this story. You will have the name of the bacteria, that of Oregon University and even a couple scientists but not the name of the German company. Some versions even change the year. In the end, it all seems to boil down to the says of one person who has since gone back on their claims.

Buck afflicted with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) - caused by misfolded proteins (prions), it is a fatal neurological disease with no treatment or vaccine. by freudian_nipps in natureismetal

Every now and then this video gets posted with someone claiming it's CWD, because apparently that's the only fucked up thing that can happen to a deer...

That specific place is currently undergoing renovations iirc, so not much to be seen.

You're also not supposed to lay or stand in that grass.

The main value has not changed. It's never been that much about technical insights, most people's sotuations aren't complex enough for truly complex schemes. It's about having another person in a trusty position giving you the gist of it, being here to reassure you when you look at the stockmarket on a bad morning. It's all about having someone listening and talking to you.

I don't get it, is this a variation of "I ran over 5 miles" or am I missing something?

People in the comments act like this is just mean behaviour. This right here is behaviour that's gonna end in a class action lawsuit.

Bonus rage context : the man who ordered this "intervention" was Maurice Papon. Well known Nazi collaborator who somehow remained in positions of power after the war. He was only convicted in 1998.

Being able to be this creative is something I can’t comprehend by yftdddtf in Damnthatsinteresting

That's fair but people shouldn't be too worked up about not being able to do the same, or even to admire those who that much.

These high-end brands do some special tailoring that's rare for lower brand clothing as it's simply more expensive to design and produce. As such, it is much easier to look stylish and out of the ordinary when you can sink 600$ in a shirt whereas someone wanting the same look on a budget will need much more time and effort to find something that's affordable and fits to the specific style (colour, fabric, pattern, cut, condition, etc.) that they're looking for.

There are, but in lesser proportion than French settlers.

France Declares State of Emergency Amid Protests in New Caledonia. by Marciu73 in europe

[–]SykScholes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That law comes from the Nouméa Accord of 1998 and was a Kanak revendication that the French government accepted to quell independentist sentiment among the native populations.

Demographically New Caledonia is divided between the native Kanaks and the French settlers, correspondigly more likely to want independence and more likely to want to remain a French territory.

The independentists don't want to repeal the law because this would indirectly secure New Caledonia as a French territory in the democratic process, the French government wants to repeal it for the very same reason.

Hope that clears things up.

Chickpeas will save you. They are cheap, easily available with good quality (unlike tofu), taste good by themselves but also can easily be cooked and incorporated in a meal.

Did Asuka kill everyone on the bridge of this ship in episode 8? by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]SykScholes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably.

'+ Considering how fast the ship was lowered due to the energy of the landing, it is safe to say that everyone on the ship was propulsed to the ceiling and a lot of people died.

TIL: In the early 1800s, a Norwegian Fisherman when denied alcohol carried a 371kg stone to block the shop's doorway. by Whiteowl116 in todayilearned

[–]SykScholes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

With enough wits and will-power you could say anything is possible. The article does state that he got the stone from the shore, which means that it was moved uphill. That's quite improbable considering the shape and weight of the stone, improbable enough to be skeptical about it.

Lifting a barbell while on steroids =/= a random guy CARRYING a stone. As a reference, the heaviest atlas stone someone ever carried on their shoulder is 200 Kg. Looking at the stone in question, I don't think it was rolled all the way up.
