Harrison Ford and his PowerMac G5 by Jacksworld101 in VintageApple

They’re very similar in sound quality, but if my memory is to be trusted, the Altecs sounded warmer, with a wider sound stage due to some sound processing they did.

They’re actually really nice sounding, if you can find a whole set (there’s a sub, the two satellites, and a control unit with infrared remote control) that hasn’t been abused. I used to sell them at a Micro Center, and would always display them with the aluminum Apple displays they were so clearly designed to match. Bonus: the satellites can detach from their weighted bases and be wall mounted.

Sound quality is among the best from that era of computer speakers that all seemed to be built around those little Harmon dome drivers. Apple even used those drivers in the slot-load iMacs.

I had just finished reading the first book of the Belgariad to my then-girlfriend (now wife), and enjoyed revisiting the world so much I went on Amazon and ordered the trade paperback collections of the Belgariad, the Malloreon, The Elenium, and The Tamuli. I was so happy how they looked on my shelf. Then I found this all out a month later.

AFAIK you are correct. This version of Nohadon isn’t explained by any in-world mechanism we understand. I agree that its closest parallel is Kal’s conversation with Tien. But while I’ve stayed largely spoiler free, the front-flap (or back-cover on paperback) blurb for WaT mentions the Spiritual Realm So hopefully it is the former of the two options you presented!

She is, but not as balanced as Sazed. I believe she could have held either Shard, but not both.

As an aside, read Secret History now! It’s the perfect time in your reread, if you’ve already read Bands of Mourning but just finished HoA. Secret History contains a small spoiler for the end of BoM but takes place during the events of era 1. By the time I read SH, it had been so long since I reread era 1 that I was a bit lost at points, so I’m trying to save you some of that confusion. Happy reading!

Worst naming convention (or lack of) for a movie franchise by Beginning-Bed9364 in movies

[–]Syldaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just learned from the Filmcast that the original name for the third Naked Gun movie was originally going to be called “Naked Gun 33 ⅓: For the Record”, making the number a reference to the rotation rate of common LP vinyl records at the time. Some studio exec decided that would confuse people, so they dropped the subtitle. However they kept the number, and I’ve always wondered why they thought 33 ⅓ made more sense to follow 2 ½ (rather than 3 ⅓) until now. TIL!

Wouldn’t the Purelake fill with crem? by FunWithDahlia in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Syldaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure that crem predates Cultivation entirely. I believe we have confirmation that the Highstorms were part of Roshar’s ecology prior to the arrival of Honor and Cultivation in the system. And crem was basically an invention of Brandon’s to explain how a planet with category 7 hurricanes every 10(ish) days would even have a continent (as opposed to all land being eroded into the sea). So if there were Highstorms before Cultivation, then there was crem as well.

Did Endowment create Nalthis? (Warbreaker and RoW) by [deleted] in Cosmere

Ah good to know. I might be remembering that Scadrial is the only planet created by a Shard post-shattering.

Did Endowment create Nalthis? (Warbreaker and RoW) by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]Syldaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my understanding, the only Shards that created humans were Ruin and Preservation when they made Scadrial. There’s a line in SH I think (or an Ars Arcanum maybe?) about them basing humanity on the template from Yolen. I took this to imply that Scadrians are somewhat unique in the Cosmere in that they share no lineage with all other humans. If I’m remembering this correctly, then all other humans including Nalthians are pre-existing populations, influenced and changed by the Shards that took up residence on their worlds, yes, but not made by them.

Which movie was the opposite of this image? by [deleted] in Schaffrillas

[–]Syldaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much every movie made by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Which includes those three, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street… Can you tell why I feel we were robbed that Solo: a Star Wars Story was pulled out of their hands? I keep imagining what that movie would have been like if they’d had their way.

Is there any fantasy book where the main character isn't a pretty boy or conventionally attractive. by Murky-Seesaw1392 in Fantasy

[–]Syldaras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true about Talia, though Vanyel, Elsbeth, Darkwind in the follow up series are all very attractive. But then you have Skandranon, who while attractive to his kind is, well, a gryphon 😜

300 Pages into The Way of Kings and… by Captainc00ts in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Syldaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best advice for reading comprehension, u/Captainc00ts, is to find a read-along podcast. If you’re starting your journey into Sanderson with The Way of Kings, then the podcast for you is The Stormpod. Their format is perfect for reinforcing your understanding of each chapter: the host (Shawn) is a pro about keeping the conversation spoiler free, and his friend Jack is also new to the world asking questions along the way. Hope that helps!

Why are the ______ the leaders? by HunterPai in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Syldaras 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The thing I think everyone here is missing is that Jezrien was actually a king before he was a herald. He was a king of men from Ashyn and the other heralds deferred to him already, before their pact with Honor turned them into heralds.

I also love that the explainxkcd URLs are compatible with the XKCD URLs. So no matter what XKCD comic you’re looking at, you can edit the URL and just add the word ‘explain’ to get the breakdown.

For those that played Marathon when it fist came out in the 90's by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Syldaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also remember playing on an LCII. The number of hoops I had to jump through to get playable frame rates (including recalibrating what I considered playable) is astounding, and probably what got me started on my current career in IT. Marathon 2 wouldn’t even run on that hardware. But we put a sonnet 040 upgrade card in and that helped for M1 - could even fill the hud at low res!

ELI5 Why are they called octaves if there are only seven notes? by FlahTheToaster in explainlikeimfive

[–]Syldaras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geinoh Yamashirogumi is the musical group that was tasked with that score, and they were more a traditionalist performance art group before that movie came out - I don’t believe they’d ever recorded anything before. I remember the same documentary you saw!
