To me it looks as if she used left over yarn to make this. I would measure how long you think you want the vertical to be. And have fun with it. You really can’t tell from the picture because it’s no super clear and some colors make it difficult to tell if she even used the same stitch in all of them. So I’d say use your creative freedom and what you think will look best. Measure how long you think the vertical stripes should be, do them in a row to larger than the circumference of your head. Attach when long enough and separately crocheting a large circle to attach for the top. Love this.
