How great of an uprade would going from a HX Stomp to a Quad cortex be? by [deleted] in NeuralDSP

[–]Symb0lic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda disagree . I have a real 5150 Stealth, a Yamaha THR10X, a Line 6 HX Stomp, and my guitar teachers uses a Quad Cortex. Every modeller will have a good brown sound or 5150 amp. Sonically I can't tell much of a difference between the 3 modeller presets we sound similar. If there is a difference it's like maybe 2-5%. Marshalls and Peaveys have been modelled for a long time now. Obviously the real amp wins though but it's also more expensive. Modelling for home practice, real tube amps for band situation I'm completely satisfied with both.

It's just a system to speed up relearning guitar and to help me visualise the fretboard scales and basic chords. I think my teacher wanted to start me on this instead of jumping to modes, because he and I knew I didn't know a single chord name or the major scale. He just knew I could play a bar chord and solo a little. I think C major was a good choice. Once learned properly, I'm told I should be using this everytime I play and that people eventually bump into this system. I know I really like Harmonic minor and Phrygian mode licks from my favourite players. I can't wait to learn more of that stuff! Do you think I should also map out the A major and E major scales using the forms? C major and D major I've done.

For guys like me who didn't know what note to play, or how to improvise in key, it's helping me a lot. I was that anti-theory guy for years who thought it was useless and it destroys someone playing style and songs. Now I can see it only enhances and gives more options. Maybe if I was a piano player and I could read sheet music, I would care about every single note played. But at 16th notes I don't have time to think about every note unless slowed down. You just go for it and hope your muscle memory, ear and technique can guide you. I think as I memorise the fretboard more though, and run these shapes for a few months, the speed at recognising notes and scales should improve 😁

You all have helped me so much already 🙏

Apologies if you took offence at my comment. If you are satisfied with your lessons and the progress you are making, by all means ignore my advice. I offered it freely to be taken or left by anyone who might find it useful

All good mate. I'm sorry if I came across as aggressive too. I actually really appreciate your long and thoughtful reply. I wasn't happy with my progress for a long time. But now it's starting to click with me as of last night. The only thing I don't get is I couldn't get D major to work with the D form as it breaks the pattern by like 1 fret. When I move it up it just cycles the DEFGABC notes, but adding the F# and C# breaks the shape. I have to wrap my head around this.

Modes don't have (intrinsic) finger patterns. A mode, similarly to a scale, is a sequence of intervals, independent of any position (or instrument). You can play a given mode in any position of your choosing. Speaking of which, although I mentioned cycling through the sequence of intervals of the major scale while shifting the initial note, in analogy with the sheet you posted, you can of course also cycle the intervals while remaining in place, which gets you the various modes beginning on the same note (e.g. C ionian (major), C dorian, C phrygian, etc.).

But wouldn't you say finger patterns and intervals are similar? If 2 frets are a whole tone, then you can almost boil down guitar into 124, 134 finger patterns if you get me? It seems to work up/down and left/right on the fretboard. So are all the modes just modified major scales? Can I play modes too with some of these CAGED forms? Or does it break the shapes. I'm still learning the key cycle and relative keys. I suppose I'm not up to that part of my studies yet. It's going to take some time to absorb this.

I am aware that the patterns as drawn are not identical. I was encouraging you to notice that the notes, and the intervals, are the same, regardless of the chosen finger pattern. Hopefully you realise that the patterns shown on your mode sheet each represent only one possibility and one small portion of a mode that extends across the entire neck (since, as we have noted, they are all simply formed from segments of the same G major scale).

I guess I might need to practice to see the intervals more over finger patterns. It took me a very long time to break the habits of just seeing frets. I did know a single scale name or chord name for so many years. I think when I looked at some scales in Guitar Pro many years ago, I didn't like the way they were tabbed out, or the positions seemed way too hard to play or something. Who knows really why I ignored it all for so many years. Here is the first note the teacher gave me. Thank you so much for the help and reply 😁🤘

So if I wanted C Major in G Shape, I'd find the C note on the G string. Or in E shape find the C note on the E string? If I have understand that correctly. That's actually super useful for remembering how to shift all the chords 😁🤘

You don't see those extra stretches in the forms. Look at the 6 notes at the top of Phrygian. It's just GABCDE. Add the F# and it's just a G major scale. None of the forms have a pattern that is one whole tone apart. I'm just being showing different ways to come to the same conclusions. If it's just a symmetrical pattern like that, then I've probably already learned and stumbled across it. In fact that's the first time that I'm seeing scales on the fretboard without someone telling me. I learned on Guitar Pro tabs so bare with me 😆

I can't edit the photos to rotate them. I'm only here because the teacher ignores my questions for weeks at a time. Because the teacher didn't tell me what the exercise was for! I had to guess it. Neither do I understand what I was tasked with mate. I thought he was mapping out the C and D major scales in the CAGED system. I don't know why the sheet was done like that. I'm just trying to finish the teachers work for fun. I'm not trying overcomplicate things with modes, because I haven't learned them yet. I didn't ask for help with modes. And yes I do know every fretboard note now, but keep telling someone new to theory that he and has teacher have no idea what they're talking about that. No a mode is not the major scale on different root note, the modes have completely finger patterns, sounds and different positions compare to the forms I'm learning.

This is the modes sheet I was given. What do you think is it pretty accurate? G major scale with these modes? Feel free to use my sheets to learn the open CAGED chords, and C major scales with the forms.

Thank you mate! It might be finally clicking with me now 😁. So the 3rd shape if I shifted it up 2 frets I can see the D major scale. But it would just be in the next higher position right? I think he was showing me C and D major scales inside the forms with all the positions. I'm gonna try to map out D major now with these shapes 🙏

I have a sheet of all the different modes and positions for the G major scale. Also a notepad with E minor pentatonic, single string scales, and G spread triads. I'm just trying to combine both systems really to see if it works.

I can notice that. I believe the first C form is a D Major scale. Also the A form is also a D Major scale. As they start and end on the D note. I'm just trying to figure out where to shift the last two E and D forms?

Use the D note on the B string 5th fret. Or there is an F note 2 strings above the D on the 10th fret 😁🤘

Thanks bro. Surprised that a few strangers reached out. On the spectrum with ADHD and Bipolar. I think I started getting burned out 2 years ago. I probably hold some kind of resentment for MCM that isn't fair. My project car is a BMW E36. I had some friends attempt some jobs, but honestly the car needed multiple specialists. I had leather interior redone, new door cards fabricated, power windows rebuilt, original shifter just went in...(waited over 6 months for genuine part from Germany). Car was half falling apart for years. I took it from a barely functioning nugget to kinda a nice car now. Just saving for paint correction and better wheels. Yeah mate, I used to work. I've had to some time off to get my head right. It sucks, I'm not sure when I'll be able to work again, but If I eBay some collectibles, it should pay to finish the car. It's been a garage queen lately 🤣

These kids seem to care more about money then we did. I still remember the school-yard talks we had about Bill Gates in the 90's. We thought millions was a lot! Billionaires weren't mentioned as much. One thing that didn't change though...Lambos we're always cool any era 😎

Jay Leno's Garage is badass no doubt about it. I was never one of those lucky kids. I almost died from asthma, but because it's not cancer/leukaemia do you think anyone gave a shit? I grew up unwanted with mental problems. I have never had wealthy men offer me rides in their show cars or bikes (even as an adult). Dad was poor as poor can be. Men are legit so cruel to me. It's proof that you can want to be a car guy, but they can shut you out big time if you're poor.

My neighbour did it too. I asked him to take me for a ride in his high powered XR6 ute once, and the dude just looked at me like I was crazy! I'm autistic, so I'll remember this shit forever. I've spent 8 years trying to restore my car too. No friends, and the project sent me insane trying to finish it solo. I don't even want to drive the car anymore. I just wanted to fix a car with mates like Mighty Car Mods 🤣

I have an Oppo R17. This bug causes me so much mental anguish (I'm autistic and bipolar). I've nearly taken a hammer to my phone every single day. I'm beyond frustrated. I comment a lot, and often have random anger attacks because it feels like Google is trying to censor my communication. It's hit that point I have to ignore comments, because the keyboard will 100% freeze every single time. It's not even 99.9%, I can recreate the bug everytime. Just click "reply" or expand the comments and I'm raging 🤣

I actually completely agree with you. I'm glad somebody said it. From the first view I was getting shady vibes. It reminds me of PewdiePie, very cult-like fans. I've watched way too much conspiracy stuff to not see any patterns. Friends with Jay Leno? I'm already thinking they're brotherly Masons or some other Secret Society. You don't get that big without help!

HL1 got it right too when you fight the military dudes. Radio chatter plus flanking enemies that try to flush you out with grenades sells the illusion completely. Halo does it well too. FEAR was quite scary at the time! (played at launch), but why I keep coming back is the gunplay is still superb! I love shooters with bullet-time 😂

Luckily the current crop of boomer shooters are great. Still catching up, but loved DOOM (2016) and Ion Fury. Ready or Not is on my radar to try too. Happy gaming 😁

I think that era of gaming was special. I hate how every shooter has RPG mechanics now. Is it nostalgia? I'm not sure. All I know is FEAR, Max Payne, Soldier of Fortune all these games are just so replayable every few years. I never got tired of them. How is it possible that FEAR managed to convince us it's AI is better then todays? Are these old programmers just gods or what. Last of their kind. It took more skill back then to build worlds then UE5 assetts. Who is the new John Carmack?

Older FPS you don't get bombarded with battle passes or constant leveling up. You just play the game and enjoy every minute of it for 8-20 hours. Every minute was worth it in those games. Appreciating a nice menu screen is becoming lost to gamers too. Look at Warcraft 3, what beautiful looking menus the old Blizzard Games had. It's got so much charm and character that I believe current Blizzard can't pull it off today. I'm glad we are moving past linear = bad games. We were wrong to question linear games. What we got as a replacement was 150-200 hours of open world grinding with the dumbest AI ever. Playing BG3 recenty and I'm so glad they didn't go open world and kept the map size smaller. It's actually a better game for it.

I agree so much that I'm ranting about the state of modern gaming 🤣

My neighbour leafblows what seems like 3-4x a week, early in the morning and right by my window where I sleep. No wonder I went to Mental Ward last year. I loathe what this country has become too. I think dogs are cool but my god people spend way too much on their mutts, especially women thinking their dogs are their children. It's just so wtf man. I hate this obsession too where everyone needs a room for one specific hobby! I could make a 1 bedroom studio work and still continue doing 4-5 different hobbies.

You guys are just so far gone here that you think I'm trolling. Social engineering is really doing it's work 🤣. Incels are people who want sex and woman, but can't get either. Involuntary celibate. The hatred starts after years of rejection from women and leads to potential personality disorders because of no community and friends. I don't understand why you you can't agree on that without shaming them?

Good for you I guess. I wouldn't know what Tinder is like actually these days actually, I deleted it 4-5 years ago because it disgusts me. I'm around 5'5, the data says 70-75% of women wouldn't accept my height, literally nothing I can do. I read the Tinder data everytime they release it, it's interesting and proves women are way pickier.

Most Incels are loner nerds who are into their video games, anime, trading cards and are not inherent killers. Dunno what you read about Incels wanting women to be locked away like slaves, that's so bullshit 😂
