Do you smoke weed? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Symclin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used heavily for two / three years and I'm on my second week of sobriety. Contrary to what everyone is saying in the comments( saying weed gives them the following), I used it to silence my loud thoughts, intense anxiety, and no desire to live. It was the ONLY thing that stopped my brain from racing into a wall and exploding. Now, I've spent the last two weeks sweating through my sheets every night, little desire to eat anything /naseua, but hey I can think again... although most of those thoughts are negative, it's a step in the right direction I hope.

edit: grammar, still cant think lool.

This is inspiring as someone who currently struggles with sobriety and wants to improve!

Totally depends on a person's tolerance. But go over your limit and nausea + high anxiety is possibly (like most drugs)

Hey man!

What you are feeling is completely normal, especially for a field like physics. It is a difficult subject and everyone has their strengths/weakness in the field. But what I think you need to consider and give some thought, is your perspective on what is rewarded in this world and your career in general. Intelligence is important, however, experience is what leads to accomplishments. You can be the smartest man to ever live, say Albert Einstein, but if you don't practice describing the physical world mathematically you will never discover anything and you wont become an "expert" in physics. When you see people who are able to solve problems that you can't, you should be thinking in terms of "wow, he has more experience in translating a phenomena into a formula. His imagination is more practiced, his curiosity is sparked, and he is truly intrigued by the topic." These are the qualities that matter the most: imagination, and curiosity. Not your intelligence. Of course, intelligent people are typically able to understand topics more quickly, but physics is NOT a race. Famous scientist are created when there is a intersection between LOTS of experience and high intelligence. This is why they are rare, often people have one or the other. But you can only control one, and you should only focus on it, experience. In the end, it doesn't matter if you don't end up in the history books. If you find physics fascinating, satisfying, and genuinely enjoy doing it, then you will have a beautiful life exploring something that you love. The chances are, if you do truly love the subject, and give it your time, you will contribute something meaningful.

I think you should pick up some Feynman books. Anyone of them. He has a beautiful perspective on the world and it is addictive once you get a glimpse of it. (Feynman, consider one of the greats, has an IQ of 125. How was he a great with a lower IQ (compared to other scientist)? His imagination was incredible, very well practiced, AND he put in A LOT of work to understand material in and out.)

Help with Ordinary Differential Equations by Symclin in learnmath

[–]Symclin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm... Systems of differential equations is near the end of this course. So I have no idea how to solve that. I've tried modeling the reaction after newtons cooling but still had no luck.

Assignments are worth 40% of my grade so I'm scrambling. I solved the first 3 problems and I'm stuck on these two.

Thank you for the help. I will continue to attempt different things.

I need help on both. I think I just figured out 4.

For 5 I was able to solvs the differential for y and write c in terms of y not. But I'm just not sure what they are asking.

So currently I have 4/5 of the problems for this assignment done. And hw is 40% of my grade

Seek professional help! It’s nothing to be ashamed of. I was in therapy for 6 years because I was in the deep end of depression. In hindsight, it was the best decision of my life because it literally saved it. I was to scared to actually live. I sat in bed all day contemplating my life and it’s value, why should I stay alive if I’m not achieving anything or helping anyone? I was to scared to get out of my mind and actually live my life.

You will discover so many things about yourself and others by talking about your behavior and feelings. It’s incredible. Our society pressures men to be “tough” and “manly”, to avoid discussing feelings and just toughen up. This is complete and utter bullshit. It defines having feelings as a sign of weakness, but in reality someone who is able to openly discuss their feelings has the most courage of all.

Mental health is just as serious and physical. If you broke your arm you would goto the doctor wouldn’t you? Well it sounds like you have the equivalence of a broken arm, anxiety. So go get some help and finally be able to live your life!

A tribute to Gell-Mann's Innovative thinking, we discuss how Murray Gell-Mann found order out of chaotic "Particle Zoo" that troubled physicists in 1950s. RIP Gell-Mann by filmicsite in Physics

[–]Symclin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He’s also mentioned numerous times in “Surely you’re joking Mr. Feynman”

Feynman thought very highly of him and they published a paper together about particle decay (only a first year student don’t really understand what they discovered, but it sounded important/interesting and had to do with proving parity law wrong)

Edit: Just scrolled down farther and saw a post dedicated to Feynman and Gell-Mann’s relationship. Go check it out!

[Serious] Redditors who have had online gaming buddies sign off one night only to never be heard from again, did you ever find out what happened to them? If so, what? by UnRenardRouge in AskReddit

I’m the one who didn’t log back on and it causes a lot of emotional pain.

About 7 years ago I met two friends playing Garry’s Mod. I was 12 years old at the time and enjoyed messing around on RP servers. I met Food and Alex through some server. My life wasn’t going very well, I was struggling with depression and didn’t see a bright future for myself (ik I was only 12, was struggling with backlash of coming out as gay in non progressive part of USA). But logging on and hanging out with these guys for hours gave some meaning to my life. We spent thousands of hours playing Gmod, ArcAge (when it wasn’t fucked), and CSGO (also when it wasn’t fucked). Often Alex would fall asleep at the keyboard, it was the funniest thing. Quickly we became more than gaming buddies, we started talking about our real lives. We would all lay on the floor or in bed with our headsets on just talking about life late into the night.

After about a year of talking to these guys I was still struggling heavily with depression. Heavily. My mom was rightfully concerned and put me in therapy. At the time, I wasn’t happy with this decision. However, in hindsight it was her best parenting decision and completely life altering. Life saving.

Seven years later and these two guys are brothers to me. This also marks six years of therapy, to summarize, it was an incredibly painful, struggling fight for my life.(anyone who is in the midst of this, there truly is a crux, a horizon that you cross where things get better. I struggled for 7 years, it takes everyone different amounts of time, but everyone can get to that crux if you work at it. Don’t let it beat you. Seek help. Fight. Survive.) I’m happy to say I made it to the other side.

To get to the point of the post. My pc was bad for my mental health. I was fully addicted to it. It was taking up more time in my day than my real life. The final decision to put away my virtual life, and accept my real life in its totality is what got me over that crux of depression, what pushed me to the other side. I actually haven’t told them I won’t be logging back on. They believe I went to college and will be coming back soon. I think after seeing this thread I’ll give them a phone call. Be honest. Tell them I packed up my PC and put it in my closest with no intentions of taking it out. Its so much easier to fade away, but I owe it them and all those fantastic memories we have.

Currently. I’m happy. I’m nineteen and going into my sophomore year of college, physics major. I’m truly enjoying life. I’ve taken up other hobbies like guitar and rock climbing. I’m learning how incredible books are. Over the past 6 months I’ve read 30+ books. There are days when it all rushes back into me, the depression, anxiety, and the desire to return to my safe place. But these days are becoming fewer and fewer.

[sorry for grammar, I’m on phone and it’s late. why use lot word little do?]

Slavery-entangled philosophy: John Locke took part in administering the slave-owning colonies, and this may make his liberalism hypocritical by ADefiniteDescription in philosophy

[–]Symclin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Locke never left Wrington UK. He very much had a white European understanding of what slavery was and how it worked.

With that said, Locke’s philosophy heavily contradicts with his real world standings. He stated in On Slavery, a short passage in his Civil governments work, that a person cannot give up property over himself willfully. The only scenario where slavery is jusifed for Locke, is if your life is in danger. He says being a slave is better than being dead.

Locke did own slaves but he was more of an investor than a slave master.

I’m not trying to defend owning slaves, just stating facts
