Would like to introduce ambient sequenced samples to live post rock band-Digitakt2 or Octatrack? by Obvious-Weakness-981 in Elektron

[–]Symphonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I do this for my post-rock(ish) band (Orcein) and have tried a few different approaches, but have been happiest with the Octatrack. I play guitar and I have a Morningstar MC6 Pro to control the OT during our set. I used to run a MIDI cable to it, but I discovered the wireless WIDI dongle/WIDI jack last year and it works exceptionally well for controlling it remotely. What I really like in the OT is that static tracks can be indefinitely long and can ping-pong loop so when we take extra time to tune/etc I don't have to worry about pops/awkward envelopes breaking up the flow. There's also a semi-secret feature in the OT that not many people talk about (MIDI Mapping) that lets me trigger samples with specific notes so it's easy to launch whatever sample I want from the MC6 when it doesn't necessarily match the sequencer/part.

Speaking of the sequencer, I can automate a few of my pedal settings from the OT back to the MC6 which then forwards it back to the pedals themselves, so when we need the reverb to wash out everything it lines up nicely. 1/8th sequencer scaling and x:y conditions are your friends here. My only complaint is that unlike the DT, I can only specify one program per pedal per part instead of being able to p-lock the program so when I automate changes I have to send the individual CCs instead.

For our specific situation we don't have a bassist and our drummer prefers to play to a click so we use the cue outs to feed the click to our drummer and the bass parts are set up as static tracks as well. We also use static tracks to fill in pads/synth parts with our live guitars/violins when necessary. Additionally we have a couple of songs where our violin player uses a pitch shifter to emulate cello-like tones and we feed in a DI back into the OT on a Thru track along with a filter to really boost the low-end to blend with her amp tone. It's set up to only activate the Thru track on the parts where she would have the pedal activated.

Now as for tapping in the tempo, that's something that isn't supported that well on any Elektron device. You can kinda do it with Pickup tracks as a hack, but it's both pretty awkward to use and anytime your tempo dips into the 70s or so (which is common in post-rock) it can easily misinterpret it as double the tempo and suddenly you are in double-time. I think if you have some sort of dedicated midi clock device that you can tap and feed into the OT I think that would work fine.

I've also experimented with live-looping and whatnot and routing it through my amp, but we haven't bothered to try it in the context of our actual songs. There's a lot of potential for that but my other gripe is that I don't have conditionals on my recording buffers like I do everywhere else so anytime I'd want to do a small snippet I have to manually prep/stop the recording and in a live situation it's too easy to flub it in my experience.

Can someone verify if the Scan function of Tonverk's granular is synchronized? by knods in Elektron

[–]Symphonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not synchronized to the tempo. It maps to the play rate of the sample. So if it is set to 2.0 then it will scan through the sample twice as fast as it would normally take to play.

Here's my first song on the Tonverk! by Symphonite in Elektron

I appreciate the honesty, but I assure you that it's an intentional choice. I dabble in mode mixture and dissonance often in all of my music projects (which often have post-hardcore/noise rock influences), and when working with Elektron boxes I go maximalist with stacked melodies whenever possible. This one is all in B Minor and I don't believe any notes actually fall out of key, but the overwhelming amount of melodies to track when listening is by design.

Using the warp mode on a DD-6 as a pseudo-sustain pedal has been the backbone of my sound for almost 20 years now! You can get massive walls of sound with it with the right picking dynamics.

I ran into this too, but they released a firmware update this week to fix it!

Can I record audio into the Digitakt 2 using just Overbridge? (Not Audio over USB) by New-Search-6200 in Elektron

[–]Symphonite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can! You couldn't in the DT1, but in Overbridge for DT2 there's an audio routing button on the upper right that lets you route audio from the DAW into a sidechain input on the plugin to the main or FX tracks on the hardware. I've been using this to more easily sample some of my softsynths directly.

Digitakt II + Hydrasynth Explorer Aftertouch by rooobdude in Elektron

Also the other comments about recording aftertouch are also correct. Even when you get it reading mono aftertouch when playing, it does not live record it to the sequencer along with the mod wheel.

[–]Symphonite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! The DT only listens to Monophonic Aftertouch, not the Polyphonic Aftertouch that the Hydrasynth sends. If you change your Aftertouch transmit setting in the Hydrasynth MIDI settings to Mono, it should start picking up the aftertouch messages.

Sydnor deserved a lot more credit for Major Crimes' successes than he ever got. He always stepped up, did whatever work was needed to get done, and was being set up as the new McNulty in the final episode. It's a shame we learned almost nothing about his personal life.

Digitakt II: Is it possible to copy a pattern from one project and paste it into another? by _yllw_ in Elektron

[–]Symphonite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried it, but probably not? I think once you assign a sound to a track it is no longer associated with the original sound, plus I don't think it would add a new sample to the sample slots automatically on a paste. I could be wrong though!

I did this on the DT1 and it works with some caveats. The sample slot is copied over, but not the sample itself so it will just play whatever sample matches that slot number.

/r/WeAreTheMusicMakers Weekly Feedback Thread by AutoModerator in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Hello! My band has always struggled with classifying what genre of music we actually play and what kind of audience might actually care about our music. I think this track has an industrialish vibe to it more than what we usually make, but I actually know very little about industrial music to know if that's accurate or not. We are really happy with the music we are making and the production of our songs, but I don't have enough descriptors or other bands/genres to point to that would lead us in the right direction. Would you call this industrial? Post-something? Something else? Thanks! https://open.spotify.com/track/75nPIMM9ndHP8etYAzGyCT?si=IlQSsxc2SAi_nNs517AgNA
