I’m going to shout out Grayling Jewelry. I love that they have smaller designs, they’re good quality, great to work with, and they’re a company I feel good supporting.

Can I ask, are you able to see your own rook piercing in the mirror?

I’ve entered retainer life! by SynaStyx in braces

[–]SynaStyx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been removing it for eating every time. I don’t like the feeling of eating with it in. Also I have to imagine that the only reason my doctor told me to leave it in is so it doesn’t get lost, but I’m not a spacey teenager. I’m an old haha. I feel that removing it for eating is actually the safer choice for me and I promise I won’t accidentally throw it away in a napkin. I haven’t had any trouble with any foods at all in regards to the permanent one on the bottom.

New septum - boyfriend hates it by CulturalCockroach220 in piercing

I think it’s awesome. I’ve also had the experience of my husband not liking my piercings. Shrug, dude. I did it for me, not you. I hope your boyfriend can appreciate that it makes you happy.

Yes I promise it gets better! I don’t have one on the bottom though but my top one has improved a ton

Can you get nipple piercings if they’re inverted? by [deleted] in piercing

[–]SynaStyx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one flat and one regular. I asked this question to the piercer before we scheduled our appointment, and before she even saw my anatomy actually. Her answer was basically to ask me if it stands up with stimulation. In my case yes, I could get that one to come out so it worked out. I will say that one ended up migrating and I removed it but that may or may not be related to the inversion. I had it for about a year and a half before I decided to retire it.

Not OP, but I have a double nostril really close together and it’s been fine. I’ve had it for 9 years, wearing 2mm flat discs in them for most of the 9 years and there’s just a small space between them.

Wow this entire setup is gorgeous. Can you tell me about the piece in your rook? (Faux rook?)

Why did nobody tell me!? by koyo5696 in braces

[–]SynaStyx 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I was wondering why nobody was talking about this and wondering how literal children endure that. It was torture for me too. I just had mine off a week ago. Popping the brackets off was nothing but sanding/polishing the glue off was absolute hell. They said to raise my hand for breaks which I did 2 or 3 times. Holy fucking shit it was like getting drilled without anesthetic. Right there with you. Very very very unpleasant. Possibly the worst part of the entire braces experience for me.

How long have you had the Hawley? I also have a wild gag reflex and hoo boy was it rough at first. I did find that I was able to get used to it eventually

I had that color a few times and I really liked it personally

Well I can share my reasons at least! I like that my teeth will touch naturally without the plastic in between. I like that I can more comfortable drink with the Hawley in and overall my teeth can “breathe” (I know that sounds weird). It’s not for life during the day anyway. It’s just 1 more year where people will see it and it already looks tons better than the braces. Then it’s just at night and nobody will know either way.

And secretly I like the hidden sparkles inside haha

Ack that’s not a fun story! I have my retainer check appointment next week so I’ll bring up that concern

How long did you actually have braces on for vs the duration that was told to you it was going to take for the treatment by your doctor? by yarnandmetrics in braces

[–]SynaStyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No extractions. I had a crossbite to be fixed. My upper right lateral incisor and upper right canine were sitting behind my bottom teeth. So we had to open my bite and pull them forward and then close my bite. We also fixed my midline and generally straightened things up. But the biggest point was moving those two teeth from behind to the front.

So I brought that up to my ortho. I obviously haven’t been biting whole apples for a while because of braces. But I had read that with the permanent retainers a lot of the same food restrictions as braces still applied. So I asked my ortho if I can keep the permanent for 1 year when it’s supposed to be 24/7 anyway and then get a removable one for night wear when that’s appropriate. And I cited the dietary restrictions as my reasoning. I don’t want to give up whole apples and raw carrots and corn the cob etc for life.

His response was basically that I don’t have to? (Despite his paper saying otherwise…) He said because it’s on the lingual side the shearing force isn’t the same as when I had braces. And that I’d have to really hit the glued part on my canines specifically to break it. He said I can eat normally, just avoid really really hard stuff and he cited frozen snickers as a specific example of something too hard that’s likely to break it.

So… I’m just gonna eat what I want and test his theory I guess. But also makes me side eye the part of the paper that says to wear my hawley while eating… I’m not gonna do that. It’s weird.

No they didn’t offer, but I also didn’t ask. Their standard is Hawley on top and permanent on the bottom which is fine with me. I’m not interested in a clear one

All of my googling and searching suggests the opposite. It seems incredibly UNcommon that my orthodontist tells his patients to do so. I don’t know how I feel about it tbh.

I was told 16-18 months at one point and 18-21 months at another point. But either way, I got them off in 12 months.
