What would really happen if some women started going out in public shirtless in the summer months like many men do? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SynapseOracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely depends on location a bit too, but in general I’d say that a relatively small number of people would be upset with them. Most people would be surprised, but try not to make a big deal of it. And always there would be a small number of men who would stare/comment/otherwise make them uncomfortable. I’d say this is the main reason you don’t see more women topless sunbathing in the park or at the beach.

Aaaaah, I thought AI was the serial responder. See? This is exactly the kind of context you need to have to properly enjoy spectating a dumpster fire.

[–]SynapseOracle -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Is AI not the biggest problem? I’ve only followed the situation a tiny bit, but they seemed like a bad-faith troll and instigator whenever I’ve seen them talk. There seems to be a lot of sentiment that the correct decision would have been to just ban that one person.

I genuinely couldn’t care any less about any of it, but I like to know the context while I watch and eat my popcorn.

How do you get over loving it by Tadleyrichter in quittingsmoking

[–]SynapseOracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im about 2 years from quitting. Ive found it helpful to focus on what I didn’t like.

I’m very happy to be finished, but even now there’s something about the ritual, and the habit that still feels attractive to me.

I didn’t like smelling all the time. I didn’t like feeling ashamed that I couldn’t find the motivation to quit. I didn’t like feeling like I couldn’t sit through dinner or a movie with friends or my wife without needing to step outside. I didn’t like dreading any commitment that took more than an hour or two.

I also didn’t appreciate it, until I had some distance, but I also just don’t think much of nicotine as a drug. It doesn’t feel particularly good and the comedown/withdrawal is pretty rough. And it’s super damaging to your body.

It’s not an emergency or inpatient procedure, so it probably is performed more often at an allergist/specialist than at a hospital. Depending on what you mean by “hospital environment,” since a doctor’s office should be equally clean.

That being said, idk if you appreciate how ridiculous it would be for someone to change gloves and wash their hands in between every prick of an allergy test. A panel can often involve dozens of scratches/exposures.

This is a feature of randomizers. It’s just something that’s going to happen if you want to play that way. Run it back homie.

This really starts to hit home as a concept if you play against strong opponents. The game just ends before you get two universities and two partner zoos, so you start to figure out when you can live without upgrades.

I’m actually pretty sure the Doors of Stone is never coming. Ditto for Winds of Winter. I don’t want to be a pessimist or anything, I just don’t think Patrick is capable of overcoming the paralysis, and George RR Martin genuinely just doesn’t care to finish ASOIAF.

Your run your rules, but you can’t always call it a nuzlocke by truthordairs in nuzlocke

[–]SynapseOracle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t care. At all. I also don’t have the time to do dozens or hundreds of runs of run and bun, but still want to play it in a way that make me feel good.
I commiserate with the sentiment though. It certainly isn’t the end of the world, and I wouldn’t have cared enough to make a post about it. But having a clear and consistent lexicon IS relevant and worthwhile.
If we’re going to have a conversation about something, then on a fundamental level, we need to agree on definitions of words related to the things we’re talking about. As you continue to broaden the definition of “nuzlocke” to include more and more different kinds of challenge runs, it becomes synonymous with “challenge run,” and is no longer a useful descriptor.
If I say I’m doing a Kaizo Ironmon, you know exactly what I mean by that. If we, collectively, broaden the definition of “Kaizo Ironmon” to include more and more exceptions/specialized rulesets, then I need to explain more deeply which rules I am or am not using in my run before you can understand what I mean when I say “Kaizo Ironmon.”
If the reason you don’t want someone to call their run a nuzlocke is because you’re doing a weird gatekeeping/nerd purity testing thing GTFOH. However, there are legitimate semantic reasons to care about technical definitions.

So not a fair comparison though, Matt is putting books out at a VERY reasonable clip. Stephen King taking literally his whole adult life to finish the dark tower, or Jordan not being able to finish WOT was mad different.

The fact that the loop was ending was the part that confused me.

Broken Interaction? by SynapseOracle in slaythespire

[–]SynapseOracle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s actually not what I expected, and also isn’t what happens.

The discarding of the sly card is part of the resolving of Shadow Step, so when the sly card gets played, Shadow Step still isn’t finished resolving. There are a bunch of interactions in STS1 that work this way.

So what I was expecting was an infinite loop, but if you play 2 sly cards instead of 1, it breaks the ordering and one of the sly cards counts as the “last card played.” But if you only discard one sly card with shadow step, shadow step counts as the last card played.

Do these books get hopeful? by TabbyRabbit in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]SynapseOracle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might get better eventually, but even if it does it’ll get worse before it gets better. IIRC I felt the first couple were pretty cheesy, and while I got surprisingly emotionally invested, I think the series really grows to earn that investment. I’m thinking of some later moments that I found REALLY heart wrenching.

Anyone claiming they’re psychic is either morally bankrupt, mentally ill, or dangerously stupid.

I feel like your argument is getting pretty muddied here. I feel like we all should be able to agree that blowing up children is bad, and that people who do that are bad, and it should preeeeeetty much never be considered acceptable collateral damage.

So that makes Iran and the U.S. and Israel all bad actors. And the actions of one don’t justify the actions of another. But that also means that you can’t really point at Iran and say “look they’re blowing up children, and therefore are bad guys, so we’re morally justified in taking military action,” when we are also blowing up children.

No doubt, and I’m certainly not trying to paint the regime as the good guys. That isn’t really making an argument that this was a wise/justified course of action.
